WORKSHOP DESALINATION

The Workshop proposes an approach to the complex desalination question and penetrates into the scientific and technological objects of the EC Project Desalination to gain a better understanding of the salt transport mechanism between salt laden substrates and poultices. Possibilities and limitations of the desalination treatments are considered taking into account from one hand the environmental conditions and the salt origin, and, from the other, the products characterization, within a modular desalination system which considers different substrates as composition and properties.

The Workshop Desalination aims to extend the knowledge of the restorers on the practice for desalination: the materials properties, the environmental conditions, the kind of salt and the type of treatments to apply for desalination play a fundamental role in their decision.

The results of the online survey of Desalination Questionnaire, collated and assessed using statistical software (SPSS), give an insight into the current working practice and materials selection of conservators, contractors and architects

Practical demonstration performed in situ during the 1st Workshop (Venice). Three different kind of poultices with different grain size composition, specifically prepared by Remmers, have been applied on substrates previously detected by NDT techniques. The comparison of the results (pre – post treatment) by means of the methodological research foreseen in the Project will be the aim of the next in situ research work.

WP3 – Case studiesCase study: Terese Convent - Venice

Within the laboratory tests the characterization of poultices workability, shrinkage and composition has been completed for the four main types of poultices:

• cellulose based poultices• clay based poultices (mineral class)• poultices made off a mixture of cellulose and mineral compounds• ready to use poultices

WP4 – Performance of desalination systems

The first results of moisture transport for different kind of poultices (kaolin sand, cellulose poultice and Arbocel poultice) applied on different substrates, (a fired clay brick and a calcium silicate brick), have been presented

The selection of the salt mixture composition for lab test is ready

WP6 – Knowledge transferimplementation in MDDS Project website:

salt diffusion on porous building materials

TNO organized a miniworkshop for the partners in the project on the use of MDDS (Monument Damage Diagnostic System), which took part in Feb. 2007

The project website was developed (www.bk.tudelft.nl/desalination). Activities around this deliverable have been performed by TNO and subcontractor SNA.
