The Hard Rock Hotel San Diego sponsored the sixth annual Colleges Rock Hunger Food Drive in October.

UC San Diego, San Diego State University, and California State University San Marcos participated in the three week food drive competition collecting a whopping 244,689 pounds of food through food and monetary donations!

Each college hosted campus-wide events to collect food and educate students about hunger in San Diego. Colleges hosted food drives during homecoming festivities, at sporting events, concerts, and at university transport hubs.

SDSU won the competition having collected an astounding 227,360 pounds of food. UCSD finished second, and Cal State San Marcos placed third.

Interim Mayor Todd Gloria and Food Bank CEO Jim Floros awarded a life-size “guitar trophy” to the winning college, and the Hard Rock Hotel projected the winning school’s name on the exterior of the hotel building for a week in November.

A huge thank you to all of the students who participated in the competition!

MTs, nCTs, Girl scouts & Albertsons Host 6th Annual ‘stuff the Bus’ Food Drive

The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) teamed up with the North County Transit District, Albertsons supermarkets and the San Diego Girl Scouts to host the sixth annual ‘Stuff the Bus’ Food Drive.

The food drive was held in October, and on Saturday, Oct. 26, 19 MTS and NCTD buses were stationed in 17 Albertsons parking lots and 2 Girl Scouts locations throughout the county.

At the end of the food drive the buses drove in a caravan to the Food Bank where they were unloaded by military volunteers.

In total, the food drive raised 16,448 pounds of food! The Food Bank extends a huge thank you to all who supported the food drive!

Padres employees and players visited the Food Bank to donate 233 pounds of peanut butter they collected internally at their offices. Peanut butter is an expensive, most-needed food item and is a favorite among the children and seniors we serve.

The Padres’ team also packed 300 30-pound food boxes for seniors during their visit. They were joined by pitcher Nick Vincent, Padres great Randy Jones, and of course, our favorite mascot, the Friar!

A huge thank you to the Padres for helping us provide protein-rich food to seniors and families in need!

food from the Food Bank for her family. “My mom lets me go to her apartment at the senior facility and cook the food from the Food Bank. We have to cook and eat it fast because we can’t stay for long. I don’t want them to kick out my mother. She’s 87 years old and she doesn’t deserve to be out here suffering with us,” says Teresa.

“After we finish eating we cannot hang out there all night,” explains Teresa. “They will suspect something. We go back to the car and find a place to park for the night. We try to stay in parking lots that are open 24 hours like a WalMart or CVS parking lot. It’s a little safer. I don’t sleep because I need to keep watch. It’s dangerous. I let my girls sleep and I have to let my husband sleep because he works. You can look at my eyes and see. I’m always tired.”

Teresa goes to the Food Bank’s food distribution in Encinitas once a month at St. John’s Church. The church receives food from the Food Bank and distributes the food to families in need in the Encinitas area. The food pantry at St. John’s serves, on average, 72 families every month, but the need has increased.

Janice Echols, a volunteer at St. John’s Food Pantry, explains, “Last month we received enough food by the Food Bank for 72 families, but we had 109 families show up for help. We dipped

into our food reserves to help the additional families that showed up.”

“On a regular food distribution day the families get canned beans, corn, fruit, diced tomatoes, chili, soup, tuna, a box of cereal, pasta, mac ‘n cheese, a bag of rice, and a bag of beans. Last month we had 116 families. It’s really picked up. Some people don’t have jobs. They are very tearful and explain that they’ve lost their jobs and need food assistance.”

After Teresa and her daughter load the groceries from the Food Bank into their truck, Teresa, fighting back tears, smiles and says, “I don’t normally tell people my story. I’m proud like a lot of people, but people need to know families are struggling.” She hugs her daughter and says, “We hope things will get better.”

Interim Mayor Todd Gloria launched the Food Bank’s 2013 Holiday Food Drive at a press conference in November.

Food Bank CEO Jim Floros kicked off the press conference explaining that cuts to the federal Food Stamp program coupled with a still weak local economy are driving significant demand for the Food Bank’s services. Interim Mayor Gloria expounded on the cuts to Food Stamps stating that the average family of four would receive $36 less in monthly Food Stamp benefits which, he explained, equated to about nine gallons of milk.

According to national data, the average length of time a household is on Food Stamps is 8 to 10 months, until the main breadwinner(s) can get back into employment.

During the press conference, CEO Jim Floros announced the 2013 Holiday Food Drive Co-chairs: Kimberly Medeiros, executive director First 5 San Diego, and Steve Bernstein, business banking president, Wells Fargo Bank.

Floros thanked First 5 San Diego and Wells Fargo Bank for partnering with the Food Bank for the Holiday Food Drive with television and radio commercials playing throughout the holiday season encouraging the community to donate.

The Holiday Food Drive ran from Nov. 1 to Dec. 31. More than 700 businesses, civic groups, religious organizations, and schools hosted food drives for the Food Bank collecting hundreds of thousands of pounds of food.

The Chargers partnered with the Food Bank for their annual food drive at Qualcomm Stadium before taking on the Denver Broncos.

Over fifty Food Bank volunteers greeted fans in the Qualcomm Stadium

parking lot to collect cash and canned food donations.

Before game day, two Charger Girls, Clarisse and Kara, promoted the food drive with live interviews on five morning radio programs: Channel 933, 101KGB, KOGO 95.7, Star 94.1, and XTRA Sports 1360 AM.

In a ceremony before kick-off, Chargers’ senior vice president, Ken Derrett, presented Food Bank CEO Jim Floros with a donation of $2,000 for food purchase which provided 10,000 meals over the holidays to families in need.

Floros was joined by this year’s Holiday Food Drive Co-chairs, Kimberly Medeiros, executive director of First 5 San Diego and Food Bank board member Steve Bernstein, business banking president, Wells Fargo Bank.

During the half time ceremony, Floros presented the winner of the food drive, Stan Solis of El Cajon, with a signed Antonio Gates football for donating nearly 650 pounds of food.

The food drive was a huge success this year, raising thousands of pounds of food and monetary donations in time for Thanksgiving. The Food Bank thanks the Chargers and Charger Girls for their amazing support!

Greetings! I joined the Food Bank in January 2013, and after one year on the job, words can’t express how truly impressed I am by this fine organization and the vital

work the Food Bank does day in and day out in the community.

As a truly local organization, we are only able to fulfill our mission thanks to the local businesses, civic groups, schools, religious organizations, foundations, volunteers and donors that support us throughout the year.

And that brings me to an important point. Hunger isn’t just a problem that happens over the holidays. While we are truly grateful for the community’s support over the holiday season, it’s important to note that we will be feeding as many or more children, families and seniors in January as we were in December. Please know that your continued support is vital for us to ensure that those in need throughout the county don’t go hungry.

That being said, I would like to extend a HUGE THANK YOU to the entire community for supporting this year’s Holiday Food Drive. Over 700 businesses, schools, civic groups, and religious organizations hosted food drives for the Food Bank.

Our Holiday Food Drive partners First 5 San Diego and Wells Fargo Bank were instrumental in the success of this year’s campaign. With the support of our media partners they encouraged the community to donate nonperishable food items in our famous red barrels at all 57 Vons and 11 Stater Bros. supermarket locations throughout the county.

Both supermarkets did an amazing job helping collect food from the public, and Vons made giving easier by preparing pre-filled $10 bags of food which included our most needed food items, saving customers the extra step of having to find our most needed food items while shopping in the store. Vons’ pre-filled bags were a phenomenal success, raising over 300,000 pounds of food!

A great deal of this success is also due to our media partners KUSI News, NBC 7, KyXy 96.5, KPRI 102.7, and the U-T San Diego who helped us get the word out to the community about the easy ways San Diegans could rally together to help the Food Bank over the holidays.

And we are truly grateful to San Diego’s two major sports teams, the Chargers and the Padres. Both teams rallied behind the Food Bank over the holidays. The Chargers hosted their annual food drive at Qualcomm Stadium before their game against Denver in November, and the Padres hosted a peanut butter food drive and volunteered at our warehouse, helping pack hundreds of food boxes for seniors living in poverty. Both teams exemplify the virtues of philanthropy and community service.

Again, I thank everyone who helped us this holiday season. Your donations of food, funds and time enable us to fulfill our mission serving the hungry in our community. We couldn’t do it without you!!

food from the Food Bank for her family.

On a sunny afternoon in Encinitas, Teresa, 52, stands in line for food. She and her family are homeless and live in their SUV truck. Teresa has two daughters Olivia, 17, and Selina, 19. They have been receiving food assistance from the Food Bank for several years.

“We’ve been living in our truck for three years. Our truck is our home,” explains Teresa. “It has really affected my girls. They have changed. My 17-year-old daughter, Olivia, is a senior in high school, and my 19-year-old daughter, Selina, had a seizure and nearly died. That’s when we found out she has a disease called Lupus.”

“Before we started living in our truck we used to live at my mother’s house here in Encinitas, but I lost my job with the school district, and we couldn’t afford the mortgage payments, and we were foreclosed on. My mom is 87, and she was able to get a little apartment at a senior living facility, but they won’t

allow anyone else to live with her. We can’t live with her or she will get kicked out,” said Teresa.

“My 17-year-old daughter, Olivia, is a senior in high school. Being homeless has taken a lot out of her. My daughters worry about me, and I worry about them,” she says. “My 19-year-old daughter, Selina, can’t work because she has Lupus and doesn’t have strength. She’s very weak. And if I’m not with her, there’s no one else to watch her,” she said. “We are able to get help for her through MediCal, but the medication is very very expensive.”

Teresa’s husband works in landscaping, but she explains that there is so much competition for jobs that he doesn’t have regular work, so the family survives on the little money he makes and with food from the Food Bank.
