Men's Club Softball It was a wild game, and St. Gabriel’s came out on top, 11-8. Mark Sanderson managed to circle the bases for a two-run homer without hitting the ball past the pitcher – yeah, he’s fast. Our fan base is growing by the week; come on out and join the fun! Next game: Monday, July 22, 6:15pm vs. St. Bart’s Blue

at Our Lady of Grace in Edina.

Parish News

Dear Parishioners, Imagine a couple who never took the time to talk to each other. From outward appearances, they may appear to have a healthy marriage. They may serve each other well, share the duties of running the household, be attentive to their children, and be amicable in their relationship with each other. But if they never talk, if they never open up and share with each other what is going on in their hearts, if they never communicate as couples should, they are not in a healthy marriage. Such couples would eventually drift apart because there is no intimacy without communication. This is nothing particularly insightful. It’s common wisdom that married couples need to communicate to have an intimate relationship. You don’t even have to be religious to know this; secular culture would say the same thing. In fact, you can extend this to a lesser extent beyond marriage. Friends, brothers, sisters need to communicate if they wish to have a close relationship. If you only do things together and never communicate, the relationship is more one of utility than love. “We’re friends because we both like to golf, but if that were to change, we probably wouldn’t be friends much longer.” It’s ok to have relationships like that, certainly, but if we want a deeper friendship, we have to spend time communicating with the other person. We recognize this with our human relationships. Communication fosters intimacy. But we must not stop with our relationships with each other. Just as we must spend time devoted to communicating with each other in order to grow closer to each other, we must spend time devoted to communicating with our Lord in order to grow closer to Him. Remember the situation of the married couple who appeared to do all the right things in marriage on the outside, but didn’t communicate. That marriage would be in grave trouble. Just so, if we only do the right things on the outside in our relationship with God, but do not communicate with Him, our relationship with Him is in grave trouble. When we do not pray, we drift away from Him. Even if we do all the right things – attending Mass, avoiding sin, helping those in need – if we are not talking to God, we will forget why these things are important. Certainly, doing these things is better than not doing them. They are a sign that we do have a relationship with God. But we will eventually fall away, because these things will become separated from why we should be doing them: because we love God. That is what prayer fosters: an intimate relationship with God. When we have that, serving others becomes a natural extension of our love for Him. Without prayer, we do not find fulfillment in our life of service, even though we may be doing things that should have been life-giving. I think this is what Jesus was trying to teach Martha in this weekend’s Gospel. Martha was so distracted by her service that she had forgotten why it was good for her to serve. The Lord was there in her home. He was her guest, and what did she think to say to him? “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me.” Serving the Lord should have been an honor, but for Martha, it was a burden, something she didn’t want to have to do. She had lost sight of the love that should have been the foundation of her service, the intimate relationship with her Lord. If we find ourselves in this situation, then today is the day to start turning it around. Carve out fifteen minutes at the beginning and the end of your day to speak to God alone, to offer Him praise and worship because He is so good, to thank Him for His goodness to you, to ask Him for help and for guidance, to share with Him your troubles and your worries, to intercede for your loved ones,

SAN GABRIEL ARCANGEL

Confesiones, domingos 12;30pm Santa Misa, domingos 1:00pm

Pastor: Rev. Padre James Liekhus (Padre Jim)

Salmo — ¿Quien será grato a tus ojos, Señor? LECTURAS DE LA SEMANA Lunes: Ex 14:5-18; Sal 63 (62):2-6, 8-9; Jn 20:1-2, 11-18 Martes: Ex 14:21 — 15:1; Ex 15:8-10, 12, 17; Mt 12:46-50 Miércoles: Ex 16:1-5, 9-15; Sal 78 (77):18-19, 23-28; Mt 13:1-9 Jueves: 2 Cor 4:7-15; Sal 126 (125):1bc-6; Mt 20:20-28 Viernes: Ex 20:1-17; Sal 19 (18):8-11; Mt 13:18-23 Sábado: Ex 24:3-8; Sal 50 (49):1b-2, 5-6, 14-15; Mt 13:24-30 Domingo: Gn 18:20-32; Sal 138 (137):1-3, 6-8; Col 2:12-14; Lk 11:1-13
