Libby Jachles

Libby Jachles holds a Masters Degree with a Reading Concentration and K-12

Reading Certification from Nazareth College of Rochester, in Rochester, New

York. Her Undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree is in Psychology, with

Elementary Education Certification, also from the Nazareth College. Libby

worked in the East Irondequoit Schools from 1978-1984 as a K-6 Reading

Teacher. From 1984-1995, she worked with pre-school children in various

settings. In 1995, Libby began working in the Brighton Central School district

as a Reading Tutor. She then became a classroom teacher for several years

before assuming her role as the Language Arts Specialist. During this time,

Libby became acquainted with Ruth Culham’s work on the 6 + 1 Traits of

Writing and was instrumental in bringing the traits to the Brighton School

District. Libby used the traits in classrooms, and presented to school districts

around the country about the benefits of using the traits to teach writing to

students. In 2005, Libby formed a study group at her school in Brighton that

focused on the 6 + 1 Traits of Writing and spoke of this work in her

conversations with Ruth Culham. Ruth shared this information with

Scholastic, and later that school year, Scholastic videotaped the work of this

group. These videos are part of the Scholastic Professional Development

Series, as well as being included on Traitspace, in the Scholastic Traits Writing

Program. Libby joined Scholastic’s Classroom and Library Group as a Literacy

Consultant in January of 2012. She specializes in training and coaching

teachers in teaching writing, teaching using the traits and the Traits Writing

Program. Whenever possible, Libby continues to volunteer in former

colleagues’ classrooms to share her knowledge of teaching writing to

students.
