Programming Overview

This programm ing ma nua l is w rit ten exclusively for th e Anritsu Site Ma ster Models S113B , S114B, S 331B,

an d S 332B w ith firmw ar e Version 1.42 and above. For informa tion on firmw ar e upgrade, please contact y our

loca l Anritsu service cent er.

General Description

The Site Master must first be set into “remote” mode for communication with a computer. Remote mode dif-

fers from normal repetit ive sw eep a nd single-sw eep modes. During r emote mode, the S ite Ma ster suspends

normal opera tions and a t t ends to the serial port . The front pa nel display indicat es when the S ite Mast er is

in remote mode.

Once in remote mode, you can send control bytes a nd a ssociat ed dat a to the Site Ma ster via the serial port .

These control byte sequences command the Site Master to perform various functions and activities. The se-

rial port supports virtually all features accessible from the keypad. The only exception is the printer, which

requires connection t o the sa me 9 pin connector on t he Site Mast er rea r pa nel.

To complete t he commu nicat ion session, send t he contr ol byte to exit remote mode. Sit e Mas ter r esumes nor-

mal operations. You may also exit the remote mode by using the escape key.

Cabling

Serial communicat ions t ake place via t he 9 pin connector on t he back of the Site Ma ster. The Site Ma ster is a

DTE-type serial device and therefore requires a “null modem” cable for communication with a computer,

wh ich is also a DTE device. We provide a suita ble cable w ith y our Site Ma ster.

Serial Communication ParametersThe Site Ma ster communicat es at a baud r at e of 9600. It uses no par ity bits, 8 da ta bits, an d 1 stop bit

(N-8-1). No hardware handshaking is used.

Communications Error Checking

Since there is no ha rdw ar e han dsha king, byte level error ha ndling must be done by the controlling program.

The expected n umber of response byt es for each control byt e (listed in th e cont rol byte d escription section of

this ma nua l) works w ell for responses coming from the Site Ma ster. For da ta strea ms going to the Site Ma s-

ter, the “wa tch dog t imer” protects a gainst interrupted tra nsmissions by a borting a control byte sequence if

the inter-byte time limit is exceeded.

Parameter Validation

The Site Ma ster va lidates input pa ra meters for each control byte sequence. I f the input pa ra meters a re out

of range or invalid, t he Site Ma ster notifies t he computer by sending P ar am eter Er ror B yte #224 (E0h). The

Site Mast er discar ds the received dat a a nd w ait s for the next contr ol byte.

Entering Remote Mode

Send t he Ent er Remote Mode byte #69 (45h) to the Site Ma ster t o enter r emote mode at the end of a sweep.

Send t he En ter R emote Mode Immediat ely byte #70 (46h) to enter remote mode in t he middle of a sweep.

The Site Ma ster’s serial port buffer is one byte w ide. No interna l buffer exists, so wa it ing is essential. I f the

Site Ma ster is n ot in remote, sending a second byte overw rites th e original byt e comma nding it to go into re-

mote. I f you send contr ol byte #69, you must w ait until t he end of the sw eep. If you send control byte #70, th e

unit w ill enter remote mode as it r eceives the byte. Note tha t t his means t he dat a st ored for th e current

sweep may be incomplete.

Once you receive the response string from Site Master, you’re in remote mode.

Exiting Remote Mode

Send t he Exit Remote control byte #255 (FFh) to the S ite Mast er. Sit e Mast er sends a response byte of

255 (FF h) then exits r emote mode.

Lifetime of Changes to Site Master Operating Parameters

Syst em para meters changed during r emote mode remain changed for normal opera tion. They a re not aut o-

ma tically w rit ten t o the non-volat ile EEP ROM. Turning off power erases t he changed sett ings.

If you wa nt t he changes saved, you must save th e cha nge to one of the setup memories. U se either t he

run-time setup (location 0, which holds the power-on defaults) or one of the ten saved setups. See control

byt e #18 (12h) for deta ils.

Write Cycle Limitation of EE PROM

The EE P ROM, used to store setups, ha s a guar an teed lifet ime of at least 100,000 wr ite cycles and a n unlim-

ited nu mber of read cycles. The w rit e cycle limita tion is for a specific loca tion. For exa mple, you ca n st oresetup #1 100,000 times an d set up #2 100,000 times, etc.

I t is f or t h is re a son w e d o n ot a u t o m a t ica l ly s t o re t h e ch a n g e d syst e m p a ra m e t ers t o E E P ROM . I n st e a d , we

provide a mea ns of cha nging the opera ting par am eters independent of this limita t ion.

Be aware of the EEPROM write cycle limitat ion when programming the Site Master. Keep the number of

wr ite cycles to a minimum.

Serial port echo On/Off - Control Byte #10 (0Ah)

D e sc r i p t i o n :    Set s t he seria l port echo mode On/Off.

Serial P ort Echo Mode uses the   single sweep mode (see contr ol byt e #11 (0B h)). Ther efore, at th e end of

each sw eep cycle, the Site Mast er sends a Sw eep Complete B yte #192 (C0h) to the serial port .This mode activat es once the Site Ma ster exits from th e remote mode. Serial P ort Echo sta tus can’t be sa ved

to or recalled from sa ved setups. Cycling power resets th e Serial port echo status to Off.

The Serial P ort Echo Mode allows run-time ha ndsha king between the Sit e Master a nd computer by doing

the following ...

1) En ter remote mode. Set Serial P ort E cho Mode On. E xit remote mode.

2) The Site Ma ster sw eeps once an d th en sends the S weep Complete By te.

Single Sw eep Mode activa tes once the S ite Mast er exits from the remote mode.

When the S ite Mast er returns t o local mode, the S ite Mast er stops sweeping, waits for either the

Run/Hold Key of the Site Master keypad or  triggering byte #48 (30h).

Site Master also checks for remote control byte #69 (45h) at the end of each sweep. If present in the buffer,

Site Master returns to remote mode (no sweeping, locked keypad).
