Scale of the Solar System
Create a scale model of the solar system: (due today)
- Use blank paper and pencil (colored pencils if you choose)
- Draw the relative sizes of the planet (label with the names)
- Draw the relative size of the sun
- Draw a star to represent Alpha Centauri the star closest to our solar system
(What do you know about this so-called star)?
- Place the objects in their relative locations to scale
- Draw your scale model and indicate the
distance between each object and the
diameter of each object in millimeters (obtain rulers)

*On an index card, create a postcard that would be sent to you from some other location in the universe (Earth or elsewhere – use your imagination
*Use Figure 1.1 Cosmic Address on page 3
*Begin with your name and choose a favorite location, (maybe a favorite vacation spot).
*Begin with your name and address and end with the most general (largest area) as shown in the figure for the universe
*You should have 8 lines altogether
*Draw a picture of the location of origin on the opposite side

Practice Reading the Textbook1. Read the Learning Goals on Page 1
2. Study all 17 figures & read the captions
3. Scan the chapter pages 2-21 by doing the following:
a. Read the section titles
b. Read the subsection questions
c. Read Think About It, See It For Yourself, Common Misconceptions
d. Note the special sections: Vocabulary, Mathematical Insights and
Special Topic to determine their main point(s)
e. Read the Big Picture and Summary of Key Concepts pages 21 -22
4. Now read the chapter straight through pages 2-21.
5. Continue this process tomorrow
