Sins are committed in three ways – Manasaa – with the mind,

aachaa – with words, !aayena – with the body"

The manasika paapas are to think about taking away another#s

property, to think about performing bad deeds and not to belie$e in

paraloka or life after death" The $aachika paapaas are cruel and

harsh words, telling lies, gossip mongering and blabbering"The



Shaareerika paapaas are Stealing, physical $iolence and relationship

with another#s wife"

The results of maanasika paapas are suffered by the mind, those of

$aachika paapaas by word and those of kaayika paapaas with the

body" %ne who performs serious kaayika paapas will be reborn as

immo$ables such as trees, those performing $aachika paapaas as

birds and animals and those performing serious shaareerika

paapaas will be reborn as chandala"





The results of these paapaas are e&perienced either in the present

birth, in paraloka or future birth, or some now and some later" 'll

the sinners spend time in $arious hells for $arious durations

depending on the intensity of the sin and take rebirth as plants and

trees, birds and animals, yonis such as pisachas or humans" (n the

human birth there will be signs such as deformities or diseases as

reminders of past sin" (f suitable prayaschittas are not performed,

these will continue birth after birth" (n case of mahapatakas the

signs will remain for ) rebirths, for upapatakas * and for other sins

+"

The prayaschittas are in the form worship of gods and daanam" (n

prayascchitta, the word praya means penance and chittam means

determination no to repeat it" The realiation that a sin has been

committed, a strong determination that it will not be repeated and

obser$ing penance for it, these three steps comprise prayschitta"

The smritis classify sins into Mahapatakas, -papatakas and also

.athibhramshakaras, Samkareekaranas, 'patreekaranas and

'shudhikaras"

The Mahapatakas (Great Sins) Are Five in Number:



1.Brahmahatya – killing of brahmin.

The e/ui$alent sins are lying about one#s $arna, gi$ing false

information causing somebody to be punished, false accusation

against 0uru"



2.Surapanam – drinking alcohol.

The e/ui$alent sins are to talk bad about $edas and also to forget

the $eda learned, being false witness, killing of friend, eating what

is forbidden and at forbidden time"

3.Steyam – stealing from brahmin.

The e/ui$alent sins are stealing of treasure, children and women,

horse, sil$er, land, diamond and 1ewels"

4.urutalpagamanam – maithuna !ith the uru"s !ife.

The e/ui$alent sins are maithuna with sister, daughter, daughter2in2

law, friend#s wife and forbidden women

#. $atsamsarga – to interact !ith one !ho has committed

the abo%e sins

%ne who commits brahmahatya after suffering in hell will be reborn

as dog,pig,donkey, camel,cow,goat,deer,bird, chandala"

%ne who drinks alcohol after spending time in hell will be reborn as

insect, worm, those birds feeding on e&cretion or tiger like animals"

%ne who steals gold will be reborn as spider, crocodile, snake or will

go into pishaacha yoni"

%ne who engages in maithuna with gurupatni, after suffering in hell

will be reborn as grass, creeper, bush, flesh eating animals and

birds like $ulture or cruel animals such as tiger"

%ne who takes life of animals, birds >life in any form? will be reborn

as flesh eating animal or bird"

%ne who eats forbidden food will take rebirth as insect or worm"

Thie$es in the ne&t birth will be killing and eating each other"

Those maintain contact with the forbidden or enter itno illicit

relationship with a married woman will remain as pretas and will

not attain sal$ation"

%ne who steals brahmins property > if he himself is a brahmin ? will

become a brahmarakshasa"

%ne who steals grains will take birth as rat"



%ne who steals brone will be reborn as swan"

%ne who steals water will take birth as bird"

%ne who steals honey will be born as 1ungle fly"

Stealing of milk will result in being reborn as a crow"

%ne who steals 1uice will take birth as dog"

%ne who steals ghee will take birth as mongoose"



%ne who steals meat will be reborn as $ulture

%ne who steals amimal fat will take birth as sea crow

%ne who steals oil will take birth as bat"

%ne who steals salt will be reborn as cheekhika >E?

%ne who steals curds will take birth as crain

%ne who steals silk will take birth as a bird called Tithiri"

%ne who steals white silk or clothes made of 1ute will take birth as

frog

%ne who steals cotton clothes will take birth as bird called krouncha

%ne who steals cow will take birth as monitor liard

%ne who steals 1aggery will take birth as a bird called $aagguda

%ne who steals perfumes will take birth as ci$et

%ne who steals edible lea$es and $egetables will take birth as

peacock

%ne who steals cooked and uncooked food will take birth as

porcupine



%ne who steals fire will take birth as crain

%ne who steals domestic tools will take birth as an insect called

gruhakaari"

%ne who steals dyed clothes will take birth as chakora bird"

%ne who steals elephant will be reborn as fo&

%ne who steals horse will take birth as tiger

%ne who steals fruits and tubers will take birth as monkey

%ne who abducts woman will be reborn as bear

%ne who steals water will be reborn as hombill

%ne who steals $ehicle will be reborn as camel

%ne who steals any other kind of animal will take birth as goat



' brahmin who lea$es his own prescribed duties will become a preta

called ulkamukha

' kshatriya who abandons his prescibed duties will become a preta

called katapootana which feeds on e&creta"



' aishya who lea$es his prescribed duties will become a preta

called maitaksha1yotik which feeds on puss"

' sudra who takes up some other task than the prescribed ones will

become a preta called chailashaka"

'fter spending long time as preta, when they take rebirth they

become ser$ants of their enemies"

%ne who disrespects his teacher will be a dog in the ne&t 3<< li$es

and therafter will be born as a chandala"

%ne who conducts himself in a satt$ik manner will take birth in

de$ayonis" %ne who is ra1asic in nature will be born again as human

and tamasic ones will take birth as birds and animals"

%ne who performs sins and does not perform peance for it will go tohell and thereafter when takes rebirth will e&hibit signs in his

physi/ue such as deformities and diseases and also other forms of

suffering" These are reminders of past sin and prompts for

performing prayaschitta"

%ne who steals hidden treasures will be childless in the ne&t birth"

%ne who steals gems will suffer e&treme po$erty"

%ne who takes part in a feast unin$ited will take birth as crow"



%ne who gets into unnecessary arguments will be reborn as cat"

%ne who imparts forbidden knowledge to women will ha$e bad

odour in the mouth"

%ne who teaches $eda by taking remuneration > different from guru

dakshina ? will be reborn as fo&"

%ne who abducts women of royal class will take birth as donkey"

%ne who o$erprices food will be reborn as tortoise"

'n atheist will be reborn as spider or will make a li$ing by

entertaining others"

%ne who is thankless about fa$ours recei$ed will be reborn as

spider"





ne who does not help the needy will become brahmarakshasa"

%ne who sells forbidden materials will become brahmarakhasa"

%ne who steals land will become worms and spend long time amidst

the e&creta of dogs together with his pitrus for se$en

generations" He will be tied up with $aruna pasha and will be reborn

as bird or animal"

%ne who steals cow, gold or land will spend time in hell till pralaya

and any punya that he has gained will be lost"

%ne who obstructs free mo$ement of cows or destroys cremation

ground will spend time in hell till pralaya"

%ne who kills cow goes to hell called kaalasootra and on rebirth will

be genderless for ) birth and will also suffer from leprosy"

%ne who kills cow will be born blind"

%ne who beats up his guru will suffer from epilepsy in the ne&t

birth"

%ne who sells defecti$e cows and horses > such as those with onehoof? will be reborn as tiger"

%ne who depends on the forbidden for a li$ing will be a ser$ant or

washerman in his ne&t birth"



%ne who harasses brahmins or argues for or supports thie$es will

be genderless in the ne&t birth"

%ne who undertakes wrong path will suffer from a disease called

gandamaala in the ne&t birth"

%ne who engages in maithuna with woman of same gotra will suffer

from elephentiasis in the ne&t birth"

%ne who performs ya1na for the forbidden will be reborn as

chandala"

%ne who takes money for performing ya1na and does not use it

entirely for the purpose will take birth again and agin as crow for

%ne who steals 0od#s or brahmin#s property will li$e amidst donkey

dung after death for a long time"

%ne who steals gold will be reborn with crooked nails"

%ne who drinks alcohol will be reborn with black teeth"

%ne who kills a brahmin will suffer from tuberculosis or leprosy

>0alitkushta? or leucoderma"

%ne who engages in maithuna with gurupatni will become lame in

subse/uent birth and will suffer from skin diseases"

The gossip monger will emante foul smell from his nose in the ne&t

birth"

%ne who talks ill of others will ha$e foul smell in the mouth in the

ne&t birth"

%ne who steals grains will be handicapped in the future birth"

%ne who performs adulteration in grains, milk etc" will ha$e e&cess

organ such finger"

%ne who steals food will suffer from chronic indigestion"

%ne who steals knowledge or engages in unauthorised learning will

become dumb in the future birth"



%ne who steals clothes will suffer skin disease called Sh$itra

%ne who steals horse will be lame

%ne who steals lamp will be blind in the ne&t birth"

%ne who e&tinguishes lamp and fire>agni? improperly will be blind in

one eye"

%ne who is cruel towards fellow beings will suffer $arious ailments

%ne who engages in illicit relationship wtih another#s wife will suffer

from obesity"

%ne who kills or harasses his father will suffer from congenital

ner$ous disorders such as birth paralysis or cerebral palsy

!illing or harassing one#s mother will result in being reborn blind"

!illing or harassing one#s sister or or killing of crow will result in

being reboen deaf"

%ne who harasses or kills his brother will become dumb"

!illing or harassing children or stealing gemstones of a brahmin will

cause inpotence or death of childre"e impotence



!illing or harassing of women will cause chronic dysentry in the

future birth"

%ne who kills a person of authority will suffer from tuberculosis in

the ne&t birth""

%ne who kills a $aishya will suffer from blood cancer





!illing someone from the ser$ant class will result in a k ind of

rheumatism called apatanaka where limbs become stiff"

%ne who kills craftsmen will suffer from dryness of the body

%ne who kills an elephant will meet with obstacles in e$erything

!illing of camel or parrot will lead to lead to speech defects such as

stammering

%ne who kills a horse will be reborn with an ugly and crooked face

%ne who kills a buffalo will suffer from a disease called krishna

gulma

!illing of donkey will lead to ha$ing hair like donkey in the ne&t

birth"

!illing of deer called tarakshu will cause s/uint in the eyes in the

ne&t birth"

%ne who kills a pig will ha$e unusually broad teeth

%ne who kills a deer will be reborn lame"

!illing of fo& will lead to rebirth without foot

%ne who kills a goat will be reborn with e&cessi$e organs"



%ne who kills a goat called urabhra will suffer from pandu roga"

!illing of cat will lead to yellow eyes in the ne&t birth"

!illing of crane will lead to e&traordinarily long nose"

Arinking of alcohol will lead to rebirth with black teeth or raktapitta

>haemorrageurticaria?

Cating forbidden food, those touched women during menstraution

and also by lowly class will result in chronic worm trouble in the

ne&t birth"

%ne who does not feed others e$en when he has resources will

suffer from (ndigestion > mandagni? in the future birth"

Poisoning someone will lead to chronic $omiting in the ne&t birth"

@locking or closing pathways or roads will result in foot diseases

' gossip monger in his fuure birth will ha$e chrinic respiratory

ailments"

' spendthrift will suffer from epilepsy

' tormentor of fellow beings will suffer from shoola roga in the

future birth"



%ne who has set fire to a 1ungle will suffer from chronic rakataisara

>dysentry with blood?

Aefacating or urinating in holy places or water will lead to suffering

from fistula or piles

Bausing abortion will lead to li$er and spleen diseases and 1alodara"

%ne who has broken statues>holy? will be fickle minded and

indecisi$e in the future birth"

%ne who is rude in his speech will be handicapped in the ne&t birth"

%ne who teases and talks ill of others will be bald in the ne&t birth"

%ne who mocks others will be single eyed in the ne&t birth

%ne who wrongfully takes side will suffer from paralysis"

%ne who steals brahmin#s wealth will end up destroying his own

$amsha

Stealing of copper will lead to a kind of leprosy called udumbara"

Stealing of brone will lead to kind of leprosy called pundareeka

%ne who steals brass will ha$e yellow eyes in the ne&t birth"

Stealing of pearl will result in yellow hair



Stealing of white lead or honey will result in eye diseases

Stealing of black lead will lead to cerebral diseases

Stealing of milk will result in suffering due to fre/uent urination

%ne who steals curd will be arrogant in the future birth"

%ne who steals sugar cane products wil suffer from a disease called

udaragulma

%ne who steals iron will suffer from a disease called karbura

%ne who steals oil will suffer from chronic itching

%ne who steals raw rice will be reborn toothless

%ne who steals cooked rice will suffer from tongue disease

%ne who steals fruits will suffer from ulcer or fre/uent in1uries to

fingers

%ne who steals tamboola will ha$e white lips in rebirth"

%ne who steals $egetables will ha$e blue eyes when reborn"

Stealing of tubers will lead to being reborn with short hands

birth"

Maithuna with woman of the same gotra will cause suffering from

fistula



Maithuna with deekshitastree > woman under $ow? will be reborn

with red eyes"

(llicit relationship with a married woman of the same caste will

result in heart ailments"

Maithuna with cow will lead to urinary diseases

Maithuna with horse will cause suffering from froen shoulder
