Welcome back to a new school term.

It has been sometime since the Singleton High Educat ional Community has been able to report on the events and happenings. Of note has been the recognition of our Principal Mr Tony Jarrett who is fulfilling the position of Education Director this term. A well deserved promotion to a different and challenging role within the DEC. We will continue to see Mr Jarrett as he visits and welcome him back each time. The change has meant that Ms Kenaly has taken up the Deputy position and Mrs Phillips Head Teacher VET. This is along with the change where Ms Bate is driving the ILNNP (Improving Literacy Numeracy National Partnership) with Mr Hookway taking over as Deputy and Mr Lindsay as Head Teacher Administration. I am confident that the team will continue to deliver quality education this term.

Our Professional Development Day the first day back provided staff with a fantastic opportunity to develop awareness, understanding and then skills in Literacy. The team had staff working at length, with good humour and contemplation about their own practices and searching for alternatives. All staff enjoyed the thought process and collegiality whilst seeking new ways of making connections with our students. We also looked at our School Assessment Policy and truancy procedures.

Semester 2 promises to bring much to the future for our students. Having just commenced Term 3 we have Year 12 involved in their Trial HSC examinations and entering into final preparations for the actual HSC. Major projects to be completed and assessed, final corrections to knowledge made and then onto the HSC true. Year 11 are nearing completion of an arduous course where three terms determines their HSC direction in 2014. We wish them well for their upcoming exams later this term. Subject selections early in the term for Years 7 through to 10, enable students to shape their career path and develop interests in previ-ously unconsidered curriculum.

Education Week is held in August whereby NSW Department of Education and Communities celebrates all that public education offers. Mr George Souris, State Member for the Upper Hunter, gave the opening address and made comment of the virtues, values and community that is public education. The event held in our MPC provides schools with the opportunity to recognise the achievements and outstanding contributions made by students, staff and communities. The recipients from Singleton High School who were recognised for their work in public education were:

    From our students Mitchell P, Harrison K, Sophie M and Timothy D;

    From our community Mrs Jodie Kermode and Mrs Alison Dunne;

    From our non-teaching staff Mr Robert Currie and Mrs Tracey Jones;

    From our teaching staff Mrs Leanne Mullen, Mrs Emma Redgrove and Mrs Nicole French;

School Program – Dare to Lead as an innovative program that has developed pathways for our Aboriginal students into the future and

Outstanding leadership in Aboriginal Education - Mrs Deidre Heitmeyer.

I would also like to recognise Madelaine E and Timothy D who entertained us musically and the hospitality crew for providing another wonderful banquet.

Our sister school and town relationship with Takahata, Japan, continued early in August. There was a touring party of 17; 14 students, a music teacher, a member of the Takahata Town Council and Mr Greg Davis. The continuing success of the tour is due to both Mr Davis as our representative in Takahata and Ms Cowmeadow. There have been memorable friendships established and wonderful times shared together. Thanks must go to the families who hosted the visitors and welcomed them. A wonderful experience for all.

In 2012 Singleton High School was one of a number of Australian schools randomly selected to have students sit the OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). The students listed below were randomly selected as our group to sit this assessment. PISA is committed to a better understanding of our youth, their motivation to learn, and their performance and preference for learning situations. Worldwide, more than 400 000 students from about 65 countries took part in PISA 2012. PISA certificates were presented to Andrew R, Aleisha K, Jeremiah S, Scott A, Tiari K, Brit-tany H, Liam G (top 15% Reading Literacy, top 10% Financial and Mathematical Literacy) , Mattison L (top 10% Scientific and Reading Literacy). We congratulate all participants and recognise the huge efforts of those gaining top 15% and 10% in the world for the 2012 round of testing, an incredible result. Congratulations to all students.

The recent Singleton Art Show gave an opportunity for our students to demonstrate their creative ability. Several students entered the youth section of the show and really captured the imagination of visitors. Zankia V of Year 11 is to be congratulated for her ‗Encouragement Award‘ in the Youth 16-18 age division.

The Singleton High P & C meet every 3rd Monday at 7:30pm in the staff common room. All parents/carers are most welcome. There are head teachers present reporting on happenings in their area and this provides an ideal time to ask questions about the school and its operation.

    Year 12

This is Year 12‘s last term of formal schooling. All of our Year 12 students are currently engaged in completing their Trial HSC examinations. Students have been aiming to achieve the highest rank that they are capable of for each of their subjects. The following link provides details on how the Board of Studies uses rank to moderate assessment marks:

    http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/yourhsc/step7-moderating-assessment-marks.html.

Students will be working closely with their teachers to gain meaningful feedback that students can implement to improve their examination technique leading into the HSC. Year advisors Ms Cowmeadow and Mr Means, and Head of Year Mrs Barker have been and continue to be an amazing support to the students with reminders, helpful tips and an ear to listen. Students are encouraged to talk with any teacher regarding any concerns they may have. Parents are also most welcome to contact us regarding any concerns.

It is important that students keep a balanced focus on learning in these final weeks amid the range of additional end of school activities that will be occurring. Keep safe and enjoy this time Year 12. ————————————————————————-

Year 8 and 10 – Considering their Future Year 10 students will progress onto the next stage of a very important process of considering their options for Year 11 and the subjects that they wish to study. Using the Moodle subject selection course they will be supported by personalised expert staff interviews that will assist them to select subjects that are most appropriate to their aspirations, interests and ability for study towards their HSC. As parents, could we also encourage you to be talking to your child about their future, their goals and the pathway that would be best for them to achieve these goals.

The student and parent Moodle websites provide a wealth of information regarding this process and subject information

School Uniform How fabulous it is to look at the student body at the whole-school assembly! They look amazing as the overwhelming majority of students are presenting in full school uniform and taking pride not just in their own appearance, but as a student of Singleton High School. In the midst of winter, it is important to ensure that your children have sufficient school jumpers, trousers and correct school shoes to cope with the colder and sometimes wet weather. Please remember, that under

no circumstances, are hooded jackets ‗hoodies‘ part of our uniform. We are also continuing our focus on students wearing correct footwear. Canvas or cloth shoes are not permitted at school.

Improving Literacy and Numeracy National Partnership (ILN NP) ‘Reading For Meaning; Improving our Learning Experiences’

It is with great delight that I share some exciting news!

Singleton High School is very fortunate to have received additional resources for 2013/14, in the form of a tied grant. The Improving Literacy and Numeracy National Partnership (ILN NP) Team; Ren Barnett, Jacqui Simpson, Cindy Koletsis-Tatt, Kathleen Prudence, Michele Hayes, David Welsh and myself, will in-service all teaching staff at Singleton High School to deliver highly effective reading and comprehension strategies.

We received the grant based on the size of our school and the proportion of students in the school in the bottom two bands in NAPLAN (2010 and 2011). ILN NP will enable expert teachers to share their secrets about what good readers know and do. This will have a flow on effect of improved student performance in reading and comprehension.

It is exciting to have the whole school involved. Reading For Meaning (adapted from the Focus On Reading program) and the six super comprehension strategies will form the basis of our professional development for this year.

‘WALT’ – which stands for; „What Are We Learning Today?‟ is one strategy teachers are using in our classrooms on an hourly basis to let students know our learning intention for that lesson.

We have launched this new initiative to the whole student body at an assembly. I would like to thank the following Year 10 students who did an outstanding job presenting this information: Madison M, Lucy G, Georgia S, Madeline F, Bodhi C, Koby O, Cooper H and Lachlan W.

I look forward to sharing with you more effective strategies and tips on how you can support your child to improve their learning experiences at Singleton High School, in my new role as Deputy Principal National Partnerships (DP NP).

Positive Behaviour for Learning Term 3

PBL certificates are presented to select students who demonstrate the school's PBL expectations of Respect, Responsibility, Pride and Excellence in Learning. Faculty areas are able to award these to students on a rotational basis. Congratulations to the following certificate recipients! We are proud of you because you make Singleton High School a better place to be: Yr 8 Home Economic / Languages Corey H, Amanda G, Ella P Yr 9 HSIE Ryan G Yr 11 PD/H/PE Jessie C, Marissa B, Shelby S Year Advisor Award Tayla P Yr 12 Year Advisor Award Samantha B, Rebecca N, Joshua C, Jackson H, Nicholas C

The PBL team use school data from Millennium to highlight areas of greatest need and direct our decision making. We have concentrated our efforts to the non classroom environment - areas such as the corridors and stairwells, the playground and the wearing of the school uniform. The expected behaviour has then been explicitly defined, taught and encouraged by all staff. In Term 3 the PBL Team is planning to take the PBL initiatives into the classroom.

Explicit lessons demonstrating expected behaviours in the classroom are being developed by a committee of staff and students. These lessons will be taught to the whole school throughout Term 3.

    Pit Stop for Youth

Is an interactive ‗road show‘ based on a mechanical concept likening the parts of the body to parts of a bicycle. It is a program to promote the idea of maintaining the body at an optimum performance level.

Pit Stop for Youth is designed for 13-16 year olds. The aim of the program is to reduce risk taking behaviours before they become an issue whilst increasing young people‘s knowledge of available health services in the local government area.

Singleton Community Health Service is inviting your teen to put their body over the ‗Pits‘ at your local high school. Information booths (manned by health professionals) will be set up around the school hall with information about different health issues such as smoking, drug & alcohol, the importance of wearing a helmet and skin cancer awareness, just to mention a few.

    Motivational Media 2013

    The Parents and Citizens Association have once again enabled the presentation of Motivational Media. Each year cohort will attend this dynamic presentation entitled ‗MAD for life‘. This presentation focuses on;

Making a Dream for life Making a Direction for life Making a Difference for life Making a Difference in the lives of others

This will occur in the MPC on Monday 19 August 2013 ————————————————————————

Police liaison Officer talks to Years 10 and 11

On 13 August during periods 3 and 5 the police liaison officer, Kim Smith will be talking to our students in relation to discrimination, harassment and vilification (DHV), use of social media, bystander laws, sexting and sexual harassment. She will also be discussing the consequences and affects of this type of behaviour.

Parents are welcome to attend any of these talks. Please contact the school if interested on 02 6571 1199 ————————————————————————

    The Odyssey Boys’ Program

On Monday 26 and Tuesday 27 of August this team will be presenting to Years 7, 9 and 10 boys. On the evening of 26 August, a parent presentation will occur in the MPC at 7pm. An invitation will be sent out shortly.

The Odyssey Program visits secondary schools with a fun and engaging day of workshops jam-packed with information and activities guaranteed to have everyone thinking a little differently. (Teachers included!). Our passionate aim is to challenge adolescent males with a set of tools that will assist them in taking action to open up and discuss issues that affect them all. Through interactive education and a sharing of life experiences, we hope to provide positive action toward their own growth into manhood.

The Odyssey Program is founded on the basic cornerstones of understanding, respect, personal responsibility and the innate human search for happiness. The program draws on the insights of traditional wisdom and modern research to focus directly on the needs of boys today. It is suitable for all schools. ————————————————————————

    Year 7 Immunisations

We recognise that some students missed the first (and second) opportunity to commence immunisation at school for HPV. Three doses of this vaccine are required to provide optimal protection. If parents/carers wish we can start the course for students who missed out on the first dose/s this year during the next clinic visit to the school. The course can be completed during the first visit/s next year while they are in Year 8.

    Year 7 Report

Welcome back for Term 3, yet another big term for Year 7. Our Well Done assembly went extremely well with so many students being rewarded for their efforts in Semester 1. Congratulations to you all and keep up the great work. Our parent and teacher interviews were conducted early in the term, it was pleasing to see so many parents in attendance on the evening. A big well done to Year 7 and their efforts with silly sock day, raising over $300 for Ronald McDonald House in Newcastle.

Hadley Cycles Ride for Sick Kids will be riding through Singleton on 6 September and will be stopping in at Singleton High School.

Our leadership team is busy planning activities for Tommy‘s Day, an initiative of the SRC to raise money for cancer research. They have planned some face painting and coloured hair spraying.

Jo Radcliffe and Nathan Jones, Year Advisors ————————————————————————

    Year 8 Report

As always, Year 8 students have been involved in a broad range of academic, social, cultural and sporting endeavours. A huge well done and congratulations to all those who are taking on the opportunities provided by Singleton High School and giving it their all both in the classroom and in extra-curricular activities. Keep up the great attitude and level of involvement!

Subject selections for Year 9 and 10 electives will be upon us very shortly this term. Parents and caregivers of Year 8 students are encouraged to discuss their students‘ choices and seek advice from school staff if there are any issues or concerns. Careful consideration is strongly advised.

Parents and caregivers are also encouraged to contact year advisors if there is any way in which we can support your students. Contact with ourselves, for any reason, is well received and is often a productive first step in maintaining strong partnerships between the school and families.

With Mrs Simpson relieving in the position of HT Support for Term 3, Mr Mead has willingly and enthusiastically taken on board the Year Advisor responsibilities. I would like to publicly thank Mr Mead on behalf of the Year 8 students for his commitment and contributions.

    Andrew Somerville, Year Advisor ————————————————————————-

    Year 9 Report

Year 9 has been working hard and settling back into Term 3. It is looking to be another busy term and we are looking forward to the many school events that will be coming up.

We will be participating in an interactive ‗road show‘ called Pit Stop For Youth. The program will be run over the course of two days, Thursday 15 August for the Girls and Thursday 22 August for the boys. The program is based on a mechanical concept likening the parts of the body to parts of a bicycle. It is a program to promote the idea of maintaining the body at an optimum performance level.

Year 9 are also looking forward to Tommy‘s Day on the 21 August. We will be showing our support by running novelty events on the grassed area in East Quad. There will be sack races, egg and spoon races and other fun ball games for student participation. We will also be selling toffees and some other yummy treats.

Daniel Higgins and Bec Luscombe, Year Advisors ————————————————————————

    Year 10 Report

It was great to see the return of Year 10 after the holidays and the completion of the work experience program feedback from employers has been fantastic and students should feel rightly proud of their efforts. We made a number of visits to the workplace and found students looking much older and mature than what we are accustomed to seeing at school.

Student workload is reasonably heavy at this moment and they would be well advised to manage their time accordingly so as to not place themselves under too much pressure.

A number of students will participate in the driver safety awareness program at the Singleton showground this month. This will be a demanding term at school.

Bob Collins and Leanne Ellis, Year Advisors

    Year 11 Report

Year 11 students who participated in the ―Program for International Student Assessment‖ (PISA) examination last year were recently presented with their certificates on a whole school assembly.

A special congratulations to Liam Gall who placed in the top 10% of the world for financial literacy, mathematical literacy and the top 15% for reading literacy. Mattison L also placed in the top 10% for scientific literacy and reading literacy. This is an amazing achievement.

Congratulations to Sophie M and Timothy D who were recipients of an Education Week award recognising their musical contributions at school, community and state musical events. Tim entertained the audience with a contemporary saxophone piece that amazed all attending the Education Week ceremony.

Thank you Year 12 Leadership Team… Dear Year 12 Leadership Team, It is almost time for us to farewell you and wish you the very best in your next adventure. Your time as leaders within the Singleton High School community is coming to an end… The impact you have had and the difference you have made to staff, students and community will linger long after in the form of fond memories.

You have been a great bunch of young people to work with and your enthusiasm to volunteer your time and talents over the years to ensure Singleton High School is a happy place to be will be sorely missed.

Your enthusiasm to be a part of the Leadership Team is a credit to who you are as a person. Being a part of this team was never compulsory and the door was always open for those in the year who just wanted to mingle with like-minded people to make a difference. Congratulations on your efforts over the years as you raised funds for your chosen charities. A particular highlight has been without a doubt the $1800 you raised for the local SES.

You have been the year group who initiated the staff breakfast, and for three years managed to create an uplifting atmosphere encouraging staff to finish off their year in a positive way. The time and effort that you expended over the years did not go unnoticed. Thank you!

We hope you maintain this positive approach in the next chapter of your journey and continue to make a difference in the lives of people. You have been an inspiration and have set a high standard as role models for the future leaders of our school to strive towards.

Student Survey – Tell Them From Me I am delighted that our school has been selected to participate in a Department of Education and Communities pilot of the Tell Them From Me student survey.

The survey aims to help improve student learning outcomes and measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes.

The focus of the NSW pilot project is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.

More information about the survey is available at: http://www.cese.nsw.gov.au/surveys/ttfm-parents

The survey will provide our school with valuable and quick feedback on what our students think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help improve how they do things at school.

I want to assure you that the survey is anonymous and students cannot be identified by their responses. The survey is conducted online and will take around 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 19 August and 6 September.

An information sheet and consent form about the survey is being sent home with students. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form to school by Friday, 9 August.

    Thank a Teacher 2014

WHAT talented hospitality students we have at Singleton High School!!!!!

Congratulation to each student who has completed their large assessment event for HSC Hospitality 2013.

Each student has completed and organised a three course meal for a teacher as a thank you for being part of their education at Singleton High School. The as-sessment event includes a portfolio of research and activities to ensure the meal suits the guest, costing, environmental sustainability, research and testing to presentation of the final product. These portfolios are a work of art and something for the students to be proud of for the effort and time they have put into the final product.

From marinated pork belly to salt and pepper king prawns, beef wellington to Guinness beef pie, from scallops to chicken stir-fry; these students have produced food of an extremely high level that any restaurant and head chef would be proud of.

This project is a five month effort with an eight hour timeframe for the students to prepare , serve and clean up after the event. The process is complex but enables each student to push themselves to achieve their very best for the assessment event.

Special thanks to our Year 9 helpers for doing the kitchen hand duties for the day events. Also to Mr Means and Matthew Rae for assisting in the classroom helping our students as guides for the days.

Another successful and heartfelt event. Congratulations Year 12 and Early Stage 6 Year 11 on such an excellent event. I am very proud of each of you and your efforts. Well done! Mrs Tracey Holloway Head Teacher Home Economics

This was my favourite part of the whole day, even though it was quite intimidating to jump on a quad bike along side 20 of my peers, most of them male, to ride full throttle around a huge sand pit. Despite the nerves, I was very excited and could not wait to get started. We rode the quads for about 40 minutes, in this time I managed to run into TJ‘s bike, roll my own bike not once but twice, and honestly I did not stop laughing the whole time. It was so much fun!

After that we jumped back in the 4 wheel drive and headed off into the dunes again to our sand boarding destination. We arrived at a very steep decline that we were to sand board down. All the boys snatched the boards first and had their turns. About 10 minutes later they finally decided to share (after they all axed themselves).

Then it was back in the 4 wheel drive and heading back to share our stories with the other group over lunch. We were served a fresh chicken schnitzel sandwich to fill us up ready for the bus trip back home.

All in all we had an awesome day and I would recommend the experience to anyone. If I could I would

go back and do it all again.

I loved every minute of it!!!!!!!!!!

    NAIDOC at Singleton High School

NAIDOC is a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and an opportunity to recognise the contributions of Indigenous Australians in various fields.

Singleton High School celebrates NAIDOC through many programs and this year we had a very successful assembly celebrating the successes of our Aboriginal students. We had the privilege of hearing the story of Mrs Jean Hands our Wonarrua Elder for our Yinpi and Ka-Wul Programs. Our history students did a PowerPoint presentation about NAIDOC and to conclude our Aboriginal dancers performed several traditional dances.

Congratulations to all who worked hard to ensure the assembly was a success.

After the assembly our special guests, award winners and performers were invited to the NAIDOC feast put on by the Year 9 hospitality students. This was a huge success with many compliments on the food, service and presentation of the event.

We have had a busy time with the dance group over NAIDOC week both last term and early this term.

THE NAIDOC assembly started with Aunty Jean Hands doing an acknowledgement of country. Followed by our Bandra-ra dance group performing under the leadership and mentoring of Adam Drylie.

The dance group also performed at Singleton Town Library, at the Singleton Town NAIDOC celebration, Singleton Heights Public School and Singleton Public School.

We have also completed our first Sista Speak Mentoring Program for all Aboriginal girls in Year 7 and 8. We had different activities for each year and an Aboriginal Woman from Singleton Community as guest speaker. We will be running this program again this term with the Year 9 and 10. The program is designed to inspire and motivate young Aboriginal woman about the importance of education and to raise awareness about the diverse career paths available to them, with a specific focus on issues of self-esteem, careers, culture, leadership and economic independence.

We now have six Norta Norta tutors working at Singleton High School assisting students with class work, exam preparation and assignments. There is also home work centre every Tuesday and Thursday for any other assistance that students may need.

For any enquires about any of the programs please contact Sharon at the Ka-Wul Centre at Singleton High School. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday.

Yinpi: Aboriginal School to Work Transition Program

This month we have been really busy completing new and revisiting existing PLP‘s.

A PLP (Personal Learning Plan is a valuable document tailored to each individual student. It contains cultural knowledge information,

career pathway choices and support, student hobbies and interests and much more.

Students are interviewed on each of these topics and then parents are contacted and surveyed. The results are used to support Aboriginal students throughout their school life and beyond into their working life. It is used also to help assist us in formulating career choices, school work and tutoring, cultural workshops and programs specifically for these students.

Teachers and staff members have recently undergone a specific workshop on mentoring Aboriginal students and each student has been asked to choose a mentor from the school. This mentor can be a member of staff, or a teacher who will develop a supportive relationship with their student to help guide them through their schooling.

Mrs Jo Vinson, Aboriginal School to Work Transition Coordinator

Two weeks to go and counting down, for Tommy‘s Day. The SRC have been working unbelievably hard organising this event and I think some only now comprehend the work involved in planning something of this magnitude. They had a goal of raising $5000 and I believe they have given themselves every chance of achieving this target.

A raffle with two fantastic prizes of a double pass to climb Sydney Harbour Bridge and another to go on a Hot Air Balloon ride with Balloon‘s Aloft for the price of $1 a ticket, is part of a package of initiatives which are expected to engage students and the community support.

CAPA are organising a Talent Quest to be run on the day with great prizes and which has attracted a huge amount of support from students.

All faculty and year groups have events organised for the day which will complement one another and give students the opportunity to enjoy themselves and at the same time support a great charity in the Australian Children‘s Cancer Council-Medical Research.

Singleton High students are encouraged to once again support World Vision and become a participant in the 40 hour famine on August 16 to 18.

Once again Ms Hartnett is coordinating this event and you can get your sponsorship kit from her in the Home Economics staff room.

    Ms Sue Hartnett, Sponsorship Coordinator

On Thursday, 30 May 2013, Mrs Hartnett, myself and five other peers from our Year 11 Childcare class, took a train from Singleton to Newcastle to take part in what they call “The Global Leaders Convention 2013” which is run by World Vision. On the day we got to discover the underlying causes of poverty, the stark inequalities of the world we live in and how they can contribute to lasting change through: listening to presenters, watching small multimedia presentations, peer-to-peer learning, small group discussions and an interactive global stimulation game.

All the girls that attended got really into what we had to do. When we arrived we had to sign in, therefore giving our names. We received name tags that included what group and country we were in. We all wondered what the country and group things were all about and eventually we found out. We all got to participate in what they called an interactive global stimulation game. This game was designed to provide us with what it was like for people over in third world countries. In the game we had to cut and paste our little tiny huts together, cut out and build all of our money, passports, crops and ani-mals to sell and gather, making sure we provided enough for our own country. All throughout the game people were thinking that whoever at the end had the most money or the most crops and animals won, but it wasn‘t like that at all. It wasn‘t about winning; it was about helping out others who were in need and that is why we went to the convention.

Year 11 and also Year 9 Childcare classes raise and fundraise money for two beautiful Nepalese children, Laxmi and Shankar. The money that we have raised helps to provide these children with an education, safe food, water and materials that they are unfortunately lacking. This enables us to show them that in the

future they can be who they want to be and that they just have to be l ieve in themselves.

By going to the convention I learnt that it‘s not all about me and that I do take things for granted most days and that what I have in my life, most people don‘t have. So therefore I want you to help young children like Laxmi

and Shankar by partaking in the 40 Hour Famine, run by Mrs Hartnett. Sharing the knowledge and skills to inspire fellow students, their schools, our school and the community to become global citizens and help the people in the world who are in need.

Maybe, next year you can go to The Global Leaders Convention, have fun and make a change, start your own fundraiser to help or even sign up to become a youth ambassador, just like I did.

    Year 7/8 Touch Football

On Friday 26 July, 65 students travelled to Wallsend to compete in the 7/8 touch football gala day.

Girls A played five intense games and made it through to the semi finals but were unfortunately knocked out, coming 4th in their division. Girls B played five games as well but unfortunately didn't make the semi finals and placed 5th overall.

In the boys competition boys B played three games and made it through to the semi finals where they finished 3rd overall. Boys A side played four games and didn't quite make the semis on points ending up 4th overall.

Thanks goes to the many parents who helped to cheer the players on and to the coaches for organising and training the teams. It was a huge day and thanks to the players who represented Singleton High School with pride and respect.

    Athletics

At the recent regional athletics carnival we had some excellent performances from both James B and Nick W.

James won the 1500m event and came second in the 800m event, whilst Nick produced quality performances in long jump and hurdles.

We wish both boys the best of luck as they have now qualified and will represent their school at state level. Mr Liam McKechnie, PDHPE Faculty

The Plan it Youth Mentoring Program is running again during Term 3. We have 9 mentors this term who voluntarily commit 1hour a week to mentor Year 10 students.

Mentors come from a broad background and bring with them a diversity of experience, skills and knowledge. Mentors help students to identify their skills, interests, strengths and abilities and explore career options.

Plan it Youth has been running at Singleton High School for the past 4 years and it continues to be a very effective p rog ram deve lop ing s tuden ts self-confidence and a career pathway.

This would not be possible without the support of our community.

The Homeless Winter Appeal Thank you

Earlier this winter, we at Singleton High School put out a call for donations to help the homeless. We asked for toothbrushes and toothpaste, blankets, beanies, gloves, soap and shampoo and conditioner. As a result of generous donations, we collected 5 large boxes to donate to St. Vincent De Paul. The Singleton Centre President Christine Feeney sent a letter back to the school saying ―Thank you to all who donated so generously to the Singleton SVDP Centre. The items donated will either be donated to clients through the conference section of our Centre who do home visits or sold through the retail section where funds will be used to help clients who are having financial difficulties. Winter is a very hard time for some people and these donations will help us to be able to fulfill the requests of clients during this winter period once again thank you.‖
