Fabric Preparation:

Note: WOF = Width of Fabric

• Cut two 2½” wide x WOF strips of each of the three yellow fabrics • Cut two 2½” wide x WOF strips of each of the three navy fabrics • Cut one 2½” wide x WOF strip of each of the three medium blue fabrics

• Cut one 24” x 60” piece of cotton batting • Cut one 22” x 58” piece of backing fabric • Cut four 2½” wide x WOF pieces of the navy border fabric

Sewing Tip: Accuracy is key to successful quilt piecing! A small error can multiply itself many times, resulting in a block or a finished project that does not fit properly. Check the accuracy of cutting and stitching frequently.

Marking the Patchwork Top

36. Press the piece flat.

37. Using tape, secure the quilt top to a flat surface, keeping the fabric taut and smooth.

38. Using a wash-away fabric marker and 24” ruler, mark diagonal lines on the patchwork top, going through the corners of the blocks, as shown.

Sewing Tip: Pressing each row of seams in the opposite direction helps eliminate bulk at corners and provides more accurate matching of seams.

Adding the Backing

61. With right sides together and raw edges matching, pin the backing to the batting/patchwork top.

62. Change the stitch length to a medium setting.

63. Using a ¼” seam, stitch, joining the backing to the batting/patchwork top by stitching around all sides, leaving a 9” opening on one of the long sides of the table runner.

64. To eliminate bulk, trim the corners at an angle.

65. Turn the table runner right side out through the opening.

66. Hand-stitch the opening closed. Press. Machine Quilting

67. Change the top thread to a monofilament thread. Place a navy thread (or thread that matches the color of the quilt backing) in the bobbin.

68. Change the stitch length setting to medium-long.

69. If the machine has an Edge Guide, insert it.

70. Position the patchwork top under the presser foot, aligning the needle with the first bottom left drawn line.

71. Stitch on top of the drawn line, through all the layers of the table runner.

72. Reposition the fabric to the next line, again starting at the bottom left side.

73. Stitch on top of the drawn line, through all layers of the runner. Continue until all lines are sewn, always starting at the bottom and sewing toward the top.

74. Measure and slide the Edge Guide so it is 2” to the right of the needle.

75. Align the Edge Guide with the first row of stitching. This will be used as a guide to do additional quilting (instead of having to draw more lines on the fabric).

76. With the Edge Guide resting on the stitched line, sew a new row of stitching.

77. Continue repositioning the fabric, so the Edge Guide rests on each of the previously sewn lines, until there is a line of stitching every 2” diagonally across the runner.

78. Now do the same, but in the opposite direction.

79. Position the patchwork top under the presser foot, aligning the needle with the first bottom right drawn line.

80. Stitch on top of the drawn line, through all layers of the table runner.

81. Reposition the fabric to the next line, again starting at the bottom right side.

82. Stitch on top of the drawn line, through all layers of the table runner.

83. Continue until all lines are sewn, always starting at the bottom and sewing toward the top of the project.

84. Measure and slide the Edge guide so it is 2” to the right of the needle.

85. Align the Edge Guide with the first row of stitching. This will be used as a guide to do the additional quilting (instead of having to draw more lines on the fabric).

86. With the Edge Guide resting on the stitched line, sew a new row of stitching.

87. Continue repositioning the fabric, so the Edge Guide rests on each of the previously sewn lines, until there is a line of stitching every 2” diagonally across the runner.
