A bout 25 years ago Marketta Sihvo, a Fin-nish speech pathologist and voice thera-

pist, developed a simple but effective exer- cise for the voice. She named it LAX VOX® (from Latin ‘laxe’ meaning free or loose, and ‘vox’ mea-ning voice).

After only 2 or 3 minutes of LAX VOX® you can feel and hear a change in your voice – it feels free and relaxed. Vocalizing becomes effortless and carefree; the voice sounds fuller, smoother and more balanced.

LAX VOX® is for everybody who uses their voice - so it’s also for you!

LAX VOX® is used in voice therapy, in singing pedagogy, by broadcasters, in (musical) theatre, in the studio and on tour.

Even children love LAX VOX®.

On www.laxvox.de you’ll find all of the infor-mation that you need to get started: Exercise instructions and published research are free to download. The videos show you how to use LAX VOX® and give you helpful tips.

If you want to find out more, please visit one of our LAX VOX® workshops. Here you will learn all of the important details and the uses of LAX VOX®.

To get started, you’ll need your own LAXVOX® tube. You can get yours in the official Shop for LAX VOX® products at shop.laxvox.de.

Usage:

The tubeholder fixes the LAX VOX® tube in the water at the desired depth. Be-cause it stops the tube from slipping deeper into the water, it avoids strain for the user. Place the tubeholder onto the tube and slide the tube into the water to the desired depth. Make sure that the tubeholder does not completely block the bottle neck, which may cause excess pressure in the bottle.

Tutorial

LAX VOX® Basics

You‘ll need: A LAX VOX® tube and a glass/bottle with water. On one end of the LAX VOX® tube there are six marks at 1,2,3,4,5and 6 cm. These marks serve as a visual guide to keep an eye on the depth of the tube in the water. The deeper the tube is in the water, the higher the resistance.

To use LAX VOX® as a relaxation exer- cise the tube should only be dipped into the water at a depth of the first or second mark (1-2cm).

1. PREPARATION

Put the tube into the water - to a maximum depth of the second mark. Hold the tube with the other hand in this position.

• Put the other end of the LAX VOX® tube in your mouth between your incisors (front teeth) and onto your tongue which should stay relaxed.

• Close your lips lightly around the tube while keeping your cheeks loose and re-laxed.

• Hold the glass/bottle close to your body at the height of your chest. Breath in through the nose and out through the mouth.

• The water begins to bubble.

2. PHONATION

• Make short and long “oo“ sounds (like in „moo“) into the tube. Let your cheeks vibrate with the bubbling water.

• While making an “oo“ sound, vary your pitch. The jaw is loose and relaxed.

• What do you feel? Monitor your muscles, breath, posture and voice: What happens? Laxvoxing feels easy and relaxed. You don ́t have to try hard.

3. PITCHGLIDES AND MELODIES

• Do some pitch glides (up and down) through the tube.

• Make an ,oo’ sound to some easy melodies (e.g.“Happy Birthday“).

• Experiment with what changes, when you vary the depth of the tube in the water.

4. EXERCISE WITHOUT TUBE

• Option 1: While exercising, slowly pull the tube out of the water. Maintain all other vocal adjustments and keep on singing or speaking through the tube.

• Option 2: While exercising gently open your lips. The tube stays in the same place.

• Option 3: While exercising, take the tube gently out of the mouth. Don‘t change any-thing else.

• Exercise without the tube, making “ooh“ sounds and humming. Try to maintain the LAX VOX® feeling.

5. TRANSFER

• Count from 1-5, say the days of the week, speak short sentences, read a text, use this voice in a conversation.

• If the LAX VOX® feeling gets lost, speak the text / sing your song into the tube again.

What if it doesn’t feel right?

Pay attention to the depth of the tube in the wa-ter. Try to pull the tube out a little bit. The more water there is in the tube, the more effort you‘ll need.

Your lips, jaw and the tongue should be loose. Let your cheeks vibrate.

You only need as much air as you need for saying “oo“.

Sit down in a cozy position and try again.
