KEYFRAMES series – brings glimmers of the past to life.

An absurd, poetic and disturbing image of two men whose heads are stuck inside in a jar of

swimming goldfish. They wander about town, questioning passers-by who thus become

participants in this comical yet disconcerting act. Dressed in suits, they could be ordinary

tourists, if not for the bowl around their heads, rendering communication next to impossible.

Into Pulsar investigates the evolution of the wheel—the invention responsible for land mobility

since its inception before 3500 BCE.

This interactive installation by Singaporean artist Ryf Zaini draws inspiration from different

wheeled and mechanical artefacts in the newly revamped Singapore History Gallery. Into

Pulsar is juxtaposed with elements of the bicycle, its motorised successor and technological

advancements in the two-wheeled domain, and initiates a dialogue between the inventions of

the past and the cutting-edge developments of today.

At the base of the six-metre tall installation, museum visitors are invited to activate the

coloured lighting in the structure by pedalling the bicycle, tricycle and hand-cranked device.

Almost clockwork-like, the pedalling further activates the gears, sprockets and the wheels

fitted at the top of the structure.

Adapting video mapping and experimenting on their own tattoos, Oskar & Gaspar create

dazzling live projections of models’ tattoos, transforming them into exquisite moving works of

art.

FunCycling II | BIKES 4 FUN (Singapore)

Come and see how bicycles can be used for so much more than just cycling, as Bikes 4 Fun

explores the limitless possibilities of these traditional two-wheeled machines! Participants are

Tying together electronic media, sculpture and dance, LASALLE College of the Arts presents

Shifting Interactions, a performance installation.

Dancers will traverse a dynamic performance space dotted with a series of static and animated

objects. Conceptualised as a durational and improvised performance piece, participants will

shape, change and vitalise the space over time through sound, light and movement.

The Bloc Party @ Armenian Street will be THE party to be at during the Singapore Night

Festival 2016. Come explore the coming together of an assortment of electrifying programmes

at the Armenian Street ranging from motorcycle convoys to a selection of back-to-back music

acts called Isms & Schisms presented by The Substation. This year, visitors to The Bloc Party

@ Armenian Street are set for a multi-disciplined treat.

On the first weekend, listen out for the deep rumbles of the motorcycle convoy led by Harley

Davidson Singapore, hold your own in a light saber battle by FightSaber Singapore, and dance

to the beats of roving percussion band Rhythm de Passion.

Then, return on the second weekend for the acapella tunes of Vocal XTC, and watch Main

Wayang at the Main Stage on Armenian Street brought to you by Peranakan Museum.

FightSaber’s fight choreography is inspired by not only the epic light-saber battles in the Star

Wars films but also Chinese martial arts films and Western action films. Members of

or a neutral character. These characters, along with their individual stories, come together in

a battle of good versus evil.

How does a space reveal the imprints of its past? How does its history inform the potential for

its future? Examining the building of The Substation as a window into understanding both The

Substation's past and its future, the Rubble Project introduces a series of artistic interventions

into the now obsolete box office. Incisions and intrusions into the space expose the contested

histories embodied within its scars, marks and ruins, reactivating the box office as a site for

alternative imaginings.

Transforming the interior of the box office into a fluid light environment, Murmuration uses an

interplay of light and shadow to explore different ways of encountering the space. Ong Kian

Peng's multimedia installation re-animates the flow of movement within the box office

space. As light pulsates through a space long forgotten, dormant space appears to breath

again.

:Samara reflects on the duality of progress and sacrifice. What are we willing to give up in

order to advance? Sometimes we regret accepting the cost of progress and try to recreate

past experiences that have been lost forever.

Inspired by the loss of the artist's favourite tree, :Samara is an interactive illuminated tree

sculpture created to give closure to a lost space.

:Samara invites us to reflect on the authenticity of using modern technology to recreate what

we lose in our fast-changing environment. At the same time, it gives us the opportunity to

acknowledge and let go of these losses.

storyline of The Mechanical Heart, it is a story of adventure, curious man-made machines and

the wonderful capacity of the human mind and spirit to discover and invent. Professor

Chambers is a celebrated explorer and inventor. With his son Christopher, he builds a time

machine that takes them on an expedition to find crystal caves in the subterranean depths.

On the journey back, a monstrous octopus attacks them, injures Christopher and escapes.

The devious octopus is a man-made contraption, but who is behind it? Find out in this

exhilarating performance.

stellar line-up of Noise alumni musicians and three Australian emerging acts! Featuring acts

like Stopgap, Linying and HubbaBubbas from past Noise Singapore music mentorships, and

emerging Australian acts – Alice Ivy, Tali Mahoney and Frida, this weekend will be an amazing

mix of eclectic styles of music, from both within our shores and beyond stage.

Ciao Turtle (Singapore) 7pm – 7.30pm Ciao Turtle has been gaining popularity since the release of their first three singles ‘When The Stars’ (Aug 2014), ‘I'm Out’ (Dec 2014) and ‘Mary Jane’ (Jun 2015). All three singles have received regular airplay on national radio stations such as Lush 99.5, 98.7, Class 95 and Power 98. On 14 Nov 2014, Ciao Turtle’s song ‘Being Here’ was selected as one of the three finalists, out of almost 1,000 entries for SG50's ‘The Gift of Song’ songwriting competition organised by Mediacorp. The song was officially launched on 8 January 2015. Ciao Turtle launched their debut EP on 12 March 2016 and it ranked third in the iTunes charts. They also had a ticketed launch event for the EP.

Jaime Wong (Singapore) 8pm – 8.30pm Jaime Wong is a Singaporean singer-songwriter who writes about life, death and love (or the lack of it). Influenced by the likes of Damien Rice, John Mayer and Ben Howard, Jaime started off as a regular in the local open mic circle and has gone on to perform at major music events such as the 100 Bands Festival, Baybeats 2014 and SHINE Fest 2015, collaborating with David Choi. Jaime received the Noise Singapore Award for Music in 2012, and her first EP debuted at #2 on local iTunes charts and was launched in a sold-out concert in May 2015. The launch was followed by her first showcase at a regional music festival, Music Matters 2015. Jaime and her band is set for a new release end 2016.

Alice Ivy (Australia) 9pm – 9.45pm Following her maiden USA performance at Piano’s in New York City last weekend, Melbourne-based electro-soul producer Alice Ivy unveiled her new single ‘Almost Here’, a horn-filled affair featuring hip-hop collective RaRa and Georgia Van Etten, and an Australian headline tour throughout July to herald its arrival.

In the mere 18 months since founding Alice Ivy, the artist, née Annika Schmarsel, has released a string of singles including ‘Touch ft. Georgia Van Etten’, which have piqued the interest of music media domestically and abroad, and seen her support Remi, Banoffee, Urthboy, complete a near sold-out Australian headline tour and perform overseas live dates in the UK, Europe and USA.

Linying (Singapore) 10.15pm – 10.45pm Prefacing her initiation into both local and international music scenes, Singaporean singer- songwriter Linying released her first single ‘Sticky Leaves’ in 2016, landing on Spotify's viral charts in the US and the UK—a curious step out of the tiny island-state, but not her first. Long-distance collaborations with some of European house music's newest, biggest names had Linying's work at millions of plays, a #1 song and a feature at Coachella, but the Spotify Spotlight on 2016 Featured Artist is now breaking into the indie-alternative consciousness on her own, with a brand of moving lyricism and vivid production in songs that reveal a stark emotional perspective through elements of electronica, baroque pop, folk and alt-rock.

Enec.e (Singapore) 11.15pm – 12am Enec.e is a five-piece band from Singapore formed in 2012. They bring you atmospheric songs, blending in the vocals of two female vocalists. A cohesion of sonic sounds and catchy melodies, their music is an infusion of shoegaze, folk, as well as ambient and dream pop. They craft tender dispositions and delicate melodies with a sense of rawness in their honest lyrics. They write of the ghosts in their heads and the flickering memories of intangible conversations.

bittymacbeth (Singapore) 6pm – 6.30pm Good songs come out of bad times. This is an idea central to the music of one-woman-band bittymacbeth, whose debut album Beauty For Ashes hit #1 three days after its release on iTunes and Apple Music on the Top R&B/Soul songs charts in Singapore.

bittymacbeth's music exudes jazz sensibilities, radio-friendly melodies, funky basslines and a whole lot of soul. She has held her own as a modern soul artiste on 987 Home with Joakim Gomez twice (23 Jan and 30 April), Timbre Music and Guinness Amplify Presents: Singapore Originals (August 2015's featured artiste of the month), 100+50 bands festival and Getai Soul on the same stage as Barry Likumahuwa (JKT) and Charlie Lim.

bittymacbeth first turned heads during the second Singapore-West Australian Music (WAM) Festival collaboration in mid-2014. She was one of the 15 Singaporean artistes shortlisted by Singapore Music Society (SGMUSO) for the consideration of the WAM Festival committee, despite having made her solo debut only six months prior.

She will launch her full-length album Beauty for Ashes on 31 May at the Esplanade Recital Studio, where she will be joined by opening acts Ariane Deborah and Shak, as well as special guest performers Dru Chen, Tim De Cotta, Zeeaura, Inch Chua and Benjamin Kheng.

Tali Mahoney (Australia) 7pm – 7.45pm Tali's indie-pop-melancholy piles in as much optimism as it can muster without forgetting a necessary dose of reality. The opening singles from the debut EP, the scuzzy gloss of ‘Pre Loved’, and the pure pop of "Unhealthy" hint at an impressive body of solo work, for an artist who has made a reputation as the front woman of Melbourne rock outfit Biddlewood. Tali's solo material is produced by Jarrad Brown, who has a golden ear for identifying incredible talent (King Gizzard and Dorsal Fins) and draws on a rich range of influences such as St Vincent, Bully and Frankie Cosmos. Tali's EP will be released independently this September 2016. In the meantime, catch Tali's live show—it's a winner.

Sam Driscoll (Singapore) 8.15pm – 8.45pm Sam Driscoll is a singer-songwriter who first found Internet fame as the angmoh on YouTube talking about Singaporean culture. He slowly moved from comedy to music, recording covers on YouTube and dabbling in writing original material. Sam took a leap of faith and got selected as a finalist in the NAC Noise Singapore Music Mentorship Programme in 2014, attracting the attention of many in the local music industry. He's performed in various venues such as Esplanade, *SCAPE, Hard Rock Cafe and Orchard Central. He also took part in the local singing competition The Final 1 and managed to make it to the final 16. Sam is in the midst of recording his first EP with the band, due to be released in the later half of the year.

Frida (Australia) 9.15pm – 10pm As emotive, wild and framed by flowers as their legendary Mexican namesake, Frida is the very definition of dreamy. Buoyed by haunting harmonies, pop prowess and a percolating rhythm section, Frida’s melodic assault has captivated music lovers and makers alike. Formed in 2013 by Melbourne-based singer-songwriter Eilish Gilligan, and key members of the instrumental soul band The Cactus Channel (Darvid Thor, Henry Jenkins, Lewis Coleman and Hudson Whitlock), Frida’s spell has cast itself from Lorne’s Falls Festival to as far as Singapore’s annual

Baybeats Festival, leaving hundreds in thrall to their melodic swell. In 2015, the band released their debut double A-side Slowly/I Want It All, which garnered praise from the likes of Triple J, Triple J Unearthed, Bandcamp and Frankie Magazine. The young group also announced the creation of Wyall Style, a sub-label founded and run by Frida, in collaboration with renowned local label Hopestreet Recordings. Close your eyes and surrender—Frida’s dewy pop parade is nothing short of paradise.

HubbaBubbas (Singapore) 10.30pm – 11pm HubbaBubbas is a power-packed trio consisting of funky guitarist Ryan Chan, wicked beatboxer/vocal percussionist Mervyn Ye and powerhouse vocalist Stephanie Lim. Being a semi-acoustic band does not hinder the versatile trio from delivering electrifying energy and great vibes on stage, performing songs ranging from R&B, pop, hip-hop to jazz. Their tight harmonies, incredible chemistry and quirky sense of humour have led them to perform at countless gigs and weddings since 2012, including the Istana Open House, Esplanade, World Blood Donor Day, Acid Bar, CMPB, Balaclava, Azucar, Five Bar @ Cuppage Road, Fish & Co. Glasshouse, Outpost, Timbre, Wala Wala, etc. They have also been invited to play overseas in Jakarta, Indonesia. Having started out as street musicians, HubbaBubbas have won the hearts of many heartlanders with their sincere passion for music and unique arrangements. Recent champions of Budweiser’s Made for Music 2013 competition and part of the NOISE The Music Mentorship Programme by the National Arts Council, there is no stopping this young, hungry band.

Stopgap (Singapore) 11.30pm – 12.15am Stopgap is a Singaporean indie rock outfit formed in 2011, consisting of lead vocalist Adin Kindermann, guitarists and backup vocalists Yew Jin Lee and Calvin Phua, bassist Grayson Seah, and drummer Eldad Leong. The band has appeared on the line-ups of a multitude of shows and music festivals in Singapore. Most notably, the band won the Noise Singapore Award in 2013, then went on to play at the Baybeats Music Festival in 2014 and release their single ‘Crossing Swords’, which has garnered regular airtime on Singaporean radio. In 2015, Stopgap launched their debut full-length

6pm – 6.45pm A ball of energy on stage, Ashruff’s vocals will definitely keep you energised throughout the night. He has played bass in the band Anna Judge April for 10 years. Heavily influenced by punk rock, Ashruff looks up to bands such as Bayside, Rise Against, Story of the Year and MXPX.

Amanda Tee 7pm – 7:45pm A hippie folk singer-songwriter, Amanda will hold you spellbound through her folk and country melodies with her acoustic guitar. Lyrics and how they sound so good when infused with the right melodies played a huge part in her musical influences. Her 2011 EP ‘Take It or Leave It’ shows just that, and had critics comparing her writing style to that of Suzanne Vega and Joni Mitchell. Three years later, she released her second EP Amnesiac, where you can hear how her songwriting has defined itself over the years.

Babushka 10pm – 10:45pm Babushka shares a pure desire to break away from conventional pop song structures and create instrumental music with unconventional musical scales that let your mind wander and end up in wonderful places. They perform at bars, concerts and festivals in Singapore. Babushka's soundscape is a combination of Fauzo's electrifying guitar solos, Sophia's free-flowing keyboard playing, Don's rhythm chops and loops, and Rachel's surprising improvisation. Their repertoire consists of original jazz, folk and world music compositions—all instrumental. Each ambient tune has a story to tell and a place in mind, from treacherous mountain faces to sun-kissed beaches.

The Lost Box 11pm – 11.45pm Brought together by their passion for music, what began as a group of friends jamming at void decks soon evolved into a trio of performers doing what they love most for a living. The Apex Project fuses pop and jazz with a theatrical twist. This up-and-coming seven-member a cappella group aims to break the boundaries of traditional a cappella music and hopes to inspire more Singaporeans to pursue their musical dreams.

Singapore Char Siew Bao! 7pm – 7.45pm Singapore Char Siew Bao! consists of Ruby Chen (vocals and djembe), Jacob Teo (vocals, acoustic and electric guitar), Jason Loo (vocals and acoustic guitar), and Dominic Cai (vocals and saxophone). Sharing their love for music through live performance, the band hopes to bring their unique flavour of music to audiences in Singapore through a wide variety of genres, from pop and rock to jazz and evergreens. Singapore Char Siew Bao! was a semi-finalist in MediaCorp Channel 5's 2010 reality competition One Moment of Glory. Notable performances include headlining Esplanade’s outdoor theatre segment of the Marina Bay Singapore Countdown 2014 and MediaCorp’s Countdown 2011 event at the floating platform. In addition, Ruby launched her solo EP Circles on 25 January 2014. It is now available for purchase at physical and online music retailers.

A three-man band formed by Shak, Khalis and Mikael Ravn. Shak, also known as Shak’thiya, a soulful folk singer bound to invoke emotions through his honest and heartfelt performances. Through his self-composed songs, he hopes to connect with people. Khalis, a blues guitarist, has played in various bands and fronts his own, The Midnight Ramblers. Primarily a drummer, Mikael Ravn is a multi-instrumentalist who has been on numerous tracks in the local scene. He is also currently the drummer for a local alternative rock band called feedback.

this special site-specific performance by Papermoon Puppet Theatre,

the acclaimed Indonesian contemporary puppet theatre troupe that created the exquisite

hand-made puppets in Imaginarium: Over the Ocean, Under the Sea. PRANI: the breath takes

the audience on an aural journey of Lasem, a tiny town in the northern part of Java island, and

the estuary upon which it sits. Using a whimsical and intimate style to reinvent

traditional puppetry so as to address contemporary issues, this mixed-media production

brings the exhibits to life.

Papermoon has performed in London, New York, Amsterdam, Yokohama and will be next

seen at the OzAsia Festival in Adelaide in September 2016.

Performances run for approximately 45 minutes, with 15 minutes of interaction with artists and

puppets following each performance.

(“The Cave”), relating the girl’s journey, another at National Design Centre (“The Forest”),

About NOVAK

Award-winning creative studio NOVAK, based in Newcastle upon Tyne (United

Kingdom), specialises in motion design and immersive experiences. The team produces

a diverse selection of works, both artistic and commercial. Through large-scale visual

presentation and projection mapping, NOVAK creates spectacular works that are

informed and inspired by the works’ location and social significance, as well as 2D and

3D motion design for television and web broadcasts.

About Ed Carter

Ed Carter devises and creates musical compositions and interdisciplinary projects that

are context-specific, with a focus on process, and the translation of shared architectonic

principles across art forms. He takes patterns, associations, and chronologies, and uses

these to form the structures of new site-specific work.

He has collaborated with a huge range of partners including architects, scientists,

engineers and programmers, and has received awards and commissions from diverse

sources, such as Arts Council England, Ordnance Survey, Channel 4, Cancer Research

UK, festivals, venues, and the Royal Academy of Engineers.

40,000 people visited Ed Carter’s 2012 project ‘~Flow‘ (a collaboration with Owl Project),

which was commissioned as part of Artists Taking the Lead, a series of large-scale public

art commissions funded by the UK Arts Councils celebrating the London 2012 Olympic

and Paralympic Games. ~Flow was a tidemill – a floating mill house moored on the River

Tyne (Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, UK), housing a series of wooden musical machines

powered by a 4.5m waterwheel, which responded to the constantly changing environment

of the tidal river.

Ed also releases music as Winter North Atlantic (http://winternorthatlantic.com). The

2013 album ‘Phonautogram’ was described by as:

“Phonautogram is a work of consummate craftsmanship, as detailed and delicate as an

Groupe LAPS: Based in France, Groupe LAPS is a collective of artists who use light in

urban environments to tell stories. Comprising video-makers, artists, musicians and

lighting experts, the group creates technical pieces that veer between reality and fiction.

Exploring space as a living organism, the collective integrates the environment into a

contextual work of adaptation, reflecting on urban scenography, circulations and flows.

The fantastical world of dreams comes to life in the dystopian love story “The

Wheelhouse” and the eccentric universe of the dandypunk. Using acrobatics, an exquisite

circular set, light and sound, and a large dose of imagination, Acrojou and A Dandypunk

transcend reality and push the boundaries of their artistic mediums. Discover the

inspiration behind their fantasy, and their secret to capturing the hearts and minds of their

audiences in this Perspectives talk.

About the artists

Acrojou: Led by artistic director Jeni Barnard, Acrojou is a collaboration between Jeni, creative director Barney White, and technical director Richard Mowbray. The company was founded in 2006 at the National Centre for Circus Arts, London. Drawing on backgrounds in circus, visual art, theatre, dance and engineering, Acrojou combine these disciplines to create narrative at the rich meeting point of bodies, structures and materials.

A Dandypunk: A dandypunk is a character from a fictional universe. Growing up b-

boying, free-running and doing graffiti on the rooftops of Victorian London, he teaches

himself the art of light alchemy from a book found on a Royal Park bench. Aerial artist

and acrobatic dancer Stephan Choiniere embodies a dandypunk, bringing his fluid

phrasing and emotive storytelling abilities to character and stage.

About the artists

GSM Project is a Montreal-headquartered firm with over 50 years of history in exhibition

design and production. Their portfolio is a varied collection of international exhibitions

environments across mediums and disciplines.

LiteWerkz is a team of nine passionate sophomore-year students from the Singapore

University of Technology and Design (SUTD). Comprising Chin Joo Ern, Daniel Yong,

Kerine Kua, Muhammad Syahid bin Mustapa, Lai Jun Kang, Ong Ying Ying, Patrick Khoo,

Tan Wan Ting andYap Zi Qi, and mentored by Assistant Professor Alstan Jakubiec and

PhD student Priji Balakrishnan, the team presents their first public light installation.

Computer scientist Max Pagel relocated from Germany to Singapore in 2012, and enjoys

exploring the latest advances in fabrication such as 3D printing and laser cutting.

Jonathan Hwang is a freelance illustrator, sculptor, writer and gallerist who draws

inspiration from nature and science, often fusing art and technology. Pagel and Hwang

belong to Starlight Alchemy, a local arts collective specialising in fire theatre, illuminated

dance and interactive art installations.

Bryan van der Beek is an award-winning commercial and editorial photographer based

in Singapore. His images span Asia, North America and Europe. A former executive

photojournalist with The Straits Times in Singapore, Bryan has also worked with

newspapers in the United States. His photographs have appeared in several

international publications including Time, Time Asia, Newsweek and The Washington

Post. His photographs, reputed for their artistic sensibility, can also be found in the

permanent collection of the National Museum of Singapore. A graduate of the Indiana

University School of Journalism, he has lectured at the School of Art, Design and Media

at Nanyang Technological University, Temasek Polytechnic and the Objectifs Centre

for Photography and Filmmaking.

Illustrations are often thought of as black lines on white paper, but with the scratchboard,

artists learn to work the opposite way: scratching away the light and leaving the

About the speaker

Singapore-based Jerry Teo has always had a strong interest in history and the military,

pursuing a career in these domains. He also has a keen interest in natural science, logo

design, comics and most forms of visual art. Jerry graduated with honours from

Sheridan College's Technical and Scientific Illustration Bachelor of Applied Arts

Program in 2008. He has been freelancing and teaching since. Prior to completing

undergrad school, Jerry also worked in Ksatria Gameworks (2007) and Silicon Illusions

(2004) as a junior concept artist and a storyboard/concept artist respectively.

Watch your doodles come to life! Brazilian artists VJ Suave lead a workshop on digital

drawing and animation with the Tagtool application, which allows users to paint, animate

and project in real time.

*iPads will be provided for participants' use during the workshop.

About the speaker

VJ SUAVE comprises Cecilia Soloaga and Ygor Marotta, a new media art duo based in

Sao Paulo, Brazil. The team makes characters fly and run across the urban landscape,

mixing animated stories with real life. Their latest work involves site-specific audio-visual

installations where the public interacts with magical characters and storytelling. VJ

SUAVE are also the creators of the Brazilian street intervention movement “Mais amor

por favor”, where they use the walls of the city to spread messages of kindness, respect

and care in the city.
