Dear Students,Welcome to the Singapore Maritime Academy (SMA)!Congratulations on your successful admission to a course at SMA and we are pleased that you havechosen to begin your career in the maritime industry with us.

It is a challenging time globally with the constantly evolving COVID-19 situation which would haveimpact on the economy and our daily lives. As you join us as part of the bigger SP fraternity, thereare safeguards put in place to ensure your health and safety. Do comply with the advisories andtwice daily temperature-taking exercises, and do your part in being socially responsible.As you step into a new learning environment, you will quickly learn that it is a very different onewhich you may be used to. Our lecturers will bring into the classroom their vast industryexperience and technical expertise while lessons are conducted in facilities ranging from theMaritime Business Centre, state-of-the-art navigation simulators, a full mission engine roomsimulator as well as SMA latest addition, the Advanced Engine Room Simulator using virtualtechnology. We infuse innovation into our teaching and learning, and use the latest digital toolssuch as Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (AR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to prepare youfor the workplace of the future.You will also be able to nurture your adventurous spirit through the various out-of-classroomactivities in your 3 years with SMA. You may also have an opportunity to take part in wateractivities at the Poly Marina which is equipped with a 42’ (Grand Bank) yacht, fast rescue boats andlifeboats.

There are opportunities for you to participate in overseas trips such as the Maritime ExperientialLearning (MEL) Camp onboard a cruise ship or student exchange programmes to overseasinstitutions such as those in Japan, South Korea and China. We assure that no students would bedisadvantaged due to their financial background. There are various scholarship opportunities andsubsidies available for deserving students and students who require financial assistance.SMA will provide you with ample exposure to the industry through internships, industry visits andtechnical talks. We will guide you through each step of your career advancement and upskillingpathways beyond SP.Besides the industry and future-driven education and training that you will receive at SMA, we lookforward to creating memorable experiences to help you grow as an individual. We urge you tobuild lasting friendships among yourselves and with our lectures to make your time here a fulfillingone.

The SMA is now at the forefront of maritime education and training with a focus on the international development of youth. It has about 915 full-time students and over 1100 students in its CoC (Certificate of Competency) and short course programmes.It has a wide pool of multinational seafaring talent.

The SMA’s faculty of over 60 teaching staff are highly qualified and were ships’ captains or chief engineers, with most holding graduate degrees in specialized fields and engaged in consultancy and joint projects including research.
