A1: Change the Conversations, Change the Culture by Mr Tan Swee Heng
Workshop Objectives
• The importance of conversations
• The type of conversations to co-create future-fit organisations
• How to initiate and embed leader-led conversations in the organisation
Workshop Outline
• Introduction
• Experiential activity on conversations
• Conversations and its importance
• Who are the people in future-fit organisations?
• What conversations are they looking for?
• Leader-led coaching style conversations (with practice)
• How to initiate and embed leader-led conversations in your organisation
Workshop Synopsis
Most leaders acknowledge the importance of organisational culture and its direct impact on
performance and success. A future-fit organisation requires a future-fit culture to support it.
How do leaders go about changing their organisational culture to be future-fit? One good
place to start is to listen to the conversations that are going on at the workplace. The types
of conversation taking place speak volumes of its culture. Culture begins to be transformed
and become future-fit when the conversations by the leaders are more engaging,
encouraging and empowering. With the coming of age of the Gen Z and their joining the
Gen Ys at the workplace in the coming years, the business case to transform the
organisational culture is becoming more urgent. Business cannot be as usual if the
organisation wants to attract and keep the young talents. In this interactive session, Mr. Tan
Swee Heng will share with you how you can use leader-led coaching style conversations to
transform your team and organisational culture, making it fit for the exciting and dynamic
future ahead.
Tan Swee Heng is the Managing Director of The Centre for
Integral Leadership – Global (CILG). CILG is an international
leadership development organisation that provides a capacity
to embed and sustain real, deep and lasting organisational
change, resulting in future-wise, robust organisations.

Workshop Synopsis
Employee engagement goes beyond employee satisfaction. It’s becoming a challenge for
organisations to create employee engagement, motivation or satisfaction without their
employees making decisions and choices about how involved they want to be at work.
Engagement occurs only when business goals and individual goals are aligned. In short, one
can't be engaged until one is in an environment that engages. Hence, in order for
organisational change to happen, individual change needs to happen first. And the glue that
holds all of these together, is how leaders communicate openly about these goals and how
the change is navigated. The more employees understand explicitly and have the
information that they need to understand exactly how what they do on a day-to-day
operational basis affects the company’s business goals, the more it will create a higher level
of buy-in and thus drive them towards ownership of the change process. As Facilitators who
are engaged to prepare Future-Fit organisations, it is our duty to craft and create a learning
process and environment that will successfully engage the hearts and minds of our
participants in wanting to change. As Change Facilitators, we have to consider many factors,
from personalities of the participants, the subject matter, their mindsets, to the physical
environment that ultimately affects their learning outcome. By embracing the ‘Art of
Engagement’, Change Facilitators will learn to understand and use the tools needed to
weave together an effective learning environment in order to harness the collective energy
and wisdom of the group to create longer lasting change.

• The Four Components of Collaborative Communication: 1) Observation 2) Feelings
3) Needs 4) Request
• The Three Primary Modes of Application: 1) Self-empathy 2) Receiving empathically
3) Expressing honestly
Workshop Synopsis
Collaborative Communication is based on the idea that all human beings have the capacity
for collaboration and compassion and only resort to violence or behavior that harms others
when they don't recognize more effective strategies for meeting needs. The theory behind
this communication style supposes all human behavior stems from attempts to meet
universal human needs and that these needs are never in conflict. Rather, conflict arises
when strategies for meeting needs clash. Hence, Collaborative Communication proposes
that if people can identify their needs, the needs of others, and the feelings that surround
these needs, harmony can be achieved. Collaborative Communication holds that most
conflicts between individuals or groups arise from miscommunication about their human
needs, due to coercive or manipulative language that aims to induce fear, guilt, shame, etc.
These "violent" modes of communication, when used during a conflict, divert the attention
of the participants away from clarifying their needs, their feelings, their perceptions, and
their requests, thus perpetuating the conflict.

awareness, self-expression and active listening skills. As you experience first-hand practical
and easy techniques in intuitive awareness, and co-creative teamwork, you learn how to
deliver innovative information that can be clearly understood and acted upon. Exemplary
teamwork inspires confidence and optimum creative output in the corporate environment.
Active Listening is the foundation for any and every future-fit organisation, and this is
developed through the course with interactive group exercises. We learn how to apply
effective communication strategies and tools in the workplace to create a more efficient,
supportive and competent environment. Stress, anxiousness and hypertension are the
enemy of innovative ideas and co-creation. A relaxed, healthy mind is essential and in fact
inspires intuitive innovation and co-creation. We learn self-care tools and strategies that
release accumulated personal stress and anxiety to encourage a healthy, vital and
productive individual, team and organisation.

been written on the charts for WE-BOARDING as inspiration, what factors would you
consider when developing a team climate to promote collaboration?)
• Activity debrief
• Summary and reflection / Ideas for implementation
Workshop Synopsis
To be effective and productive in a dynamic, fast-changing environment, a future-fit team
needs to quickly establish a climate for understanding and accepting diverse viewpoints
within the team, build consensus, and create collaborations. For more than 50 years,
psychometric instruments have helped members of intact teams understand each other so
they can use this understanding of self and others to build a productive climate. With the
advent of smart phone technology, and the entrance of millennials to the workforce, the
regular paper and pencil test with printed reports are no longer sufficient. Adapting to this
change at the workplace of multinational clients, Emergenetics International developed the
"Emergenetics+" smart phone app so team members now have interaction strategies at
their finger tips through their smart phones. This workshop will give participants a first-hand
experience of how intact teams from some multinational organisations are today building
truly collaborative team climates using a smart phone app.

Workshop Synopsis
To be Fit for the Future, it is not enough for a single organisation to plan in isloation from
the rest of the system they are part of. In a more inter-connected world, there are times
when the most effective approach is to get all the parts of a system together in a room, to
think as a system. Large Group interventions are meant for more than just sharing ideas, but
are meant to create a process where tangible actions emerge that serves the greater good.
This is relevant for Government, Non-Profits, and the Private Sector, and sometimes it is
best for all sectors to come together.
This workshop is designed for you to understand some of the Principles and Practices of
"getting the whole system in the room". You will get to experience and learn a template for
large group interventions, that you can apply when working with organisations and
communities who are looking to expand or transform their effectiveness. In the process,
you will gain some tips and tools for your consulting and facilitation practice.
