The logo is a graphic representation of the sights,

sounds and action which guests will experience at the Singapore Discovery Centre.

Bold, modern and dynamic, it represents the forward-looking spirit of the Centre.

The ear, eye and hand icons evoke the hands-on experience and interactive simulations

in store for our guests. Breaking the confines of the triangle with flying sparks, the

icons also symbolise the continued reach for new frontiers of knowledge and

discoveries, where one can truly hear the past, see the present and

touch the future.

To inspire in Singaporeans a sense of confidence in

the future of Singapore and in the SAF by enhancing

awareness of our nation's milestones and achievements

and the part citizens play in ensuring national survival,

security and success, so as to instill in them a sense

of pride in Singapore's achievements.

Giving Singaporeans an opportunity to think about

the future and what is needed for our next generation

to continue with the peace and prosperity enjoyed,

so as to prepare our citizens to meet the challenges

of the future.

W e are venturing into the new millennium with excitement and a commitment to continue to excel in what we do, and to deliver our best to all we serve. As the new Chairman of the Singapore Discovery Centre, I am privileged to be leading the Centre as it embarks on the next stage of its journey.

A C H I E V E M E N T S In this fiscal year, we continued to upgrade our facilities and improve the quality and services of our Centre. The achievement of the IS09002 quality standards in February 2001 was a testimony to our commitment towards service excellence. W i t h the certification, the Singapore Discovery Centre is committed to maintaining at least 95% exhibit availability at all times.

An internal study by MINDEF's Applied Behaviourial Sciences Department showed that the Centre had been effective in enhancing the awareness of Singapore's key milestones and achievements amongst its visitors, as well as their sense of confidence in Singapore's future. This showed that our "edutainment" approach has not only helped to entertain our visitors, but also educated them in the process.

Total visitorship to the Singapore Discovery Centre during the year was 308,222, an increase of 2.4% over the previous year. W h a t was particularly noteworthy was the I 1.6% increase in the student visitorship, amounting to 78,838. In addition, the outreach programmes conducted by the Centre's Education Department, which included roadshows, historical trails and other activities conducted outside the Centre, have enabled the Centre to reach out to another 94,797 students.

Today, the SDC runs a wide range of educational programmes and activities for children aged between 5 and 18, to cater to their diverse needs and interests. W e also enjoy the strong support of schools and educational institutions who are our institutional members.

N E W D E V E L O P M E N T "The Periscope Adventure" Gallery was launched in November 2000. Comprising six interesting interactive kiosks that challenge visitors on their knowledge of different aspects of Singapore, the Gallery is especially designed for young visitors aged 7 to 12. The feedback the Centre has received on the Gallery since its opening has been very encouraging.

T H E W A Y A H E A D The Singapore Discovery Centre faces a number of challenges in the coming year. First and foremost, we recognise that it will be increasingly difficult for the Centre to draw repeat visitors without major new exhibits at the Centre, especially with the keen competition from other attractions in Singapore and our neighbouring countries. The economic downturn has also affected arrivals to the Centre.

The Centre will focus on customer service to differentiate ourselves. W e will go the extra mile and customise our programmes to meet the specific needs of our institutional and corporate clients. But beyond this, we need to re-examine how we would position the Singapore Discovery Centre. Today, the Centre is one of many sites participating in the Ministry of Education's Learning Journeys programme. Although we are already one of the more popular sites, we should aim to do even more given our unique coverage of national issues at the Centre. W e also want to continue to make significant contributions to the National Education effort. Finding the responses to these challenges will be a key priority for us in the coming year.

A W O R D O F T H A N K S I would like to record my deep appreciation to my predecessor, Mr Peter Ho, for the firm foundations that he has laid for the Centre. Mr Ho has been instrumental in the setting up of the Centre and has chaired the Centre's Board of Directors since the Centre was opened in 1996. I also wish to thank members of the Singapore Discovery Centre, Board of Directors and Steering Committee for their support and advice, as well as the Management and staff for their dedication and hard work over the past year. I would also like to thank all our business associates, sponsors and partners for their support, and I look forward to their continued support. In particular, I would like to express my appreciation to the Singapore Totalisator Board for its support of the Centre's programmes over the years.

The process to attain this IS09002 achievement was tedious and demanding but it was definitely an important accomplishment. It strengthened our belief in the high service quality of the S D C , and further fostered our spirit of excellence. During the application process, our staff also learned to:

* Be more systematic in managing the defects and inventory records.

* Be focused at all times, on our Mission Statement and its purpose.

v Be detailed in monitoring spare parts for defects and ensuring reliability of the equipment and spare parts.

* Be stringent in our purchasing process and to have a strict purchasing policy.

Plans have already been laid out to upgrade our IS09002 to the 2000 version, which focus on system process.

The globe at the end of the tunnel is achieved by 4 mirrors which work together to create a whole, larger than any one of the individual elements. Submarine Commander Captain Mikey takes children on a journey of discovery about Singapore, fostering an appreciation for the multicultural heritage of Singapore, including festivities and trades that were important in the nation's past.

Children are challenged on their knowledge about Singapore through 6 stimulating interactive stations. Creativity is encouraged through role-play games where children can act as city-planners.

To maximise the edu-tainment potential of the gallery, a special complementary education programme was introduced. This structured programme has well-received by teachers and children alike.

To convey the message of National Education effectively, our Education Department has overhauled its educational approach in the past year. Relevant to the change, our institutional membership in December 2000 reached a high of 80% of the schools I I 5 Pre-schools and Childcare centres.

Our Education Executives guide students through visits, helping our youths to make sense of the exhibits and their connection to important National Education objectives. Special activities are also planned to complement visits, purposefully imparting knowledge to students in an enjoyable manner. These efforts have resulted in a I 1.6% increase in visitorship, a quantum of 78,838 visitors, between 1999 and 2000.

Our Education Executives also imparted the importance of National Education messages through our Outreach Programmes that included Roadshows and Special Events organized outside the Centre, these Outreach Programmes have enabled the Centre to extend out to another 94,797 students.

Programmes & Activites

SDC firmly believes that education and entertainment can wo rk together in a delightful synthesis. To prov ide a p lat form for meaningful "edu-tainment", we introduced 12 new programmes to complement the schoo l curriculum, with the common goal of imparting important values.
