Practice Convention 2014

Practice Convention 2014 is SIA 6th edition of the annual practice convention. The theme for this
year’s convention is “Achieving More with Less; New approaches to Practice”
The SIA Practice Convention 2014 was officiated by the Mr Theodore Chan, President of Singapore
Institute of Architects. In his opening speech, he highlighted some of the key pressing challenges
that we face today and some initiatives that SIA have embarked on to try and mitigate the
situation include;
Productivity & Manpower
Designs For Productivity and Buildability
B1 Premises challenge
Professional Fees and Benchmarking
While SIA celebrated our 50 Anniversary of success, we remain concerned about the changing
demands of the future. End 2013 has been about softening of property markets, new focus in
building for the new socially responsive Singapore, labour and skilled staff crunch. How do we be
nimble yet retain depth in design and project delivery? How do we achieve more with less?
SIA Practice Convention 2014 unveiled a few initiatives by SIA and our partners in the industry.
The Convention brought together a line-up of senior speakers who had many years of experience
in the building industry. The participants were updated on; latest BCA requirements for Green
Mark & Buildability and use of BP checklists for higher efficiency and better compliance;
amazed by the new SIA IDOL (digital object library) and new 3D approaches to design and pre-
fabrication; how ArchiCAD BIM workflow achieving “More” at multiple levels with “Less”, or
simply, a model; share of insights on a healthy mindset to manage and administer the new SIA
Form of Contract; update on SIA Academy’s innovative courses that close the gap between
knowledge and practice; and strategic implementation of Design for Safety during the crucial
handover stage.
Practice Convention serves as a “catapult of minds” on matters concerning architectural practice
in Singapore as well as in the global arena. It will be an opportunity for members and architects to
revisit, explore, debate, share and exchange their experiences and to engage the general
memberships, in addressing issues affecting the practice of architecture.

THE SINGAPORE WSH CONFERENCE 2014
7-8 May 2014 | Suntec Singapore
Debuting in 2010, the Singapore WSH Conference was established as a premier platform for workplace
safety and health (WSH) stakeholders across the region. This year, the Conference is poised once again to
bring together WSH professionals, business leaders and government officials to learn about latest trends
and developments impacting WSH and its practice. The third edition of this biennial conference is expected
to bring together more than 700 delegates from across the region and industries.
Increasingly, businesses and organisations have started embracing WSH as a fundamental business value,
instead of viewing it as mere regulatory compliance. However, as we strive towards WSH excellence, it
becomes important to understand health risks and safety issues to embrace WSH in its totality. The
Singapore WSH Conference 2014, with the theme “Integrating safety and health: Towards a holistic
approach”, aims to highlight the importance of adopting a holistic approach towards managing both safety
and health risks in the workplace.
Leading practitioners and businesses will share their insights and experiences on how addressing health,
along with safety, contributes to employee engagement, satisfaction and productivity, as well as
organisational sustenance and business success. Case studies and examples of best practices will also
contextualise the Conference’s message for Singapore. These will provide leaders and professionals with
key knowledge and tools to achieve sustenance in their efforts towards better safety and health outcomes.
