Why choose Coates Wildlife Tours?• We have only ever specialised in ecotourism for people

wishing to observe wildlife and experience the natural environment without damaging it or disturbing its habitats.

    • Nature is always best enjoyed in small groups! To maximise wildlife sightings and time spent in the field, we only take a maximum of 12 guests on our tours.

    • Our relaxed and meticulously planned itineraries not only visit the iconic highlights but will take you off the tourist trails to remote regions rarely visited by other operators.

    • Our dedicated team of naturalists and guides share their vast knowledge and experience of the natural world. They enjoy spending time with our like-minded guests and helping them pursue their particular wildlife passions. It is their expertise, courtesy and personalities that have our clients returning again and again.

    Choice of tour styleAccommodated tours:

    • Stay at hotels, motels, lodges, cabins, and station stays.

Camping Tours:• Easy Camping Tours – for those who love the camping

experience but would prefer not to set up a tent. The camp support crew travel ahead in a separate vehicle, set up the tents and make your stretcher bed with a self-inflating camp mat and your sleeping bag. You just have to pick up your gear and relax, freshen up or enjoy your surrounding.

    • Remote Camping Tours – camp at “five million” star campsites, chosen for their natural attractions. Often deep in the outback Remote Camping is the only way to visit the most wild locations.

    • Tag Along on some of our tours in the comfort of your own 4WD vehicle. You will have all the safety, benefits and inclusions of travelling with the group.

    • Our guides are also resourceful camp cooks for all camping tours, providing breakfast, morning tea, lunch and dinner with fresh produce and ingredients wherever available. You will be pleasantly surprised by the meals prepared by our trustworthy guides and their ability to serve delicious dishes in what can often be challenging conditions. A plentiful supply of fresh fruit is always available onboard throughout the day. We can also cater for most special dietary requirements.

    • Quality camping equipment is supplied on our camping tours, including self-inflating camp mats, camp stretcher beds and chairs with armrests. Our spacious tents are easy to erect, lightweight and waterproof. All you need is your pillow, personal items and sleeping bag (or you can purchase a new sleeping bag from us for $100.00). You will love falling asleep to the soothing sounds of the night.

    • We travel in two 4WD vehicles on our more remote journeys, carrying three passengers in each car, or you can tag along in your own 4WD. We use our custom-built, air-conditioned 4WD bus for tours of up to 12 guests with all front-facing, most reclining seats complete with seatbelts.

Coates Wildlife Tours is a wholly-owned and operated WA family company that delivers life-enhancing experiences to small groups who have a passion for nature. Our southern coastline is just beautiful – sandy coves, rolling hills leading down to the water’s edge, and offshore islands with their abundant sea-life; birds, seals, orcas and dolphins. We will showcase the natural diversity of the regions between Perth and Esperance, particularly the coastline either side of Esperance.

Highlights: • Wave Rock – resembles a giant wave of multicoloured granite and an

ancient landscape, which is also the subject of fascinating Indigenous Dreamtime stories and the site of Indigenous rock art.

    • Great Western Woodlands – an internationally significant area of great biological richness.

    • Peak Charles – an ancient granite peak surrounded by thickets, woodlands and flowering scrub; more than 40 small bird species occur in the surrounding national park.

    • Cape Arid National Park – a wildly beautiful and biodiverse area; coastal sandheaths, mallee and low granite hills.

    • Cape Le Grand National Park – featuring sweeping heathlands, rugged coastal peaks and white sandy beaches voted the best in Australia.

    • Cruise the Recherché Archipelago and the waters to Woody Island Nature Reserve – fur seals, sea lions and dolphins, as well as a range of birds including Cape Barren Geese and White-breasted Sea Eagles.

    • Pink Lake – an important bird area due to its populations of Hooded Plovers and Banded Stilts.

    • Fitzgerald River National Park – spectacular scenery where nearly 20 per cent of Western Australia’s flora species occur; many of which can only be found here.

    • Bremer Bay Canyon Whale Cruise – the undersea canyon drop-off provides the perfect habitat for Orca (Killer Whales).

    • Stirling Range National Park – a beautiful mountain landscape with a stunning and diverse range of wildflowers.

    • Dryandra Woodland – one of the prime places in the South West for viewing native wildlife and home to the endangered numbat.

The South West of WA is one of the world’s foremost biodiversity hotspots. A large portion of the South West’s beautiful landscapes and natural attractions are protected, which means they’re also the best places to observe native flora and fauna.

Few areas in Australia possess the number and variety of national parks found in WA’s south. They offer breathtaking beauty and diversity – rugged coastlines, sandy beaches, magnificent wildflowers and some of the world’s tallest forests.

It is also one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots. Almost 80 per cent of the plant species are found nowhere else on earth. The diverse range of wildflowers, forests and native animals all contribute to the rare and unique nature of the region. The birdlife is abundant as most of WA’s endemics are found here.

Kangaroos, wallabies, reptiles and sometimes whales can also be seen. We’ll be walking through open woodland, outback arid areas, an offshore island, coastal heaths, peppermint trees and Karri forests.

Highlights:• Dryandra Woodland – a scenic area with magnificent woodlands and

spectacular wildflowers; also home to the iconic striped numbat and over 100 species of birds.

    • Hopkins Nature Reserve – a superb piece of wheatbelt land made up of sand plains, scrub & mallee vegetation and woodlands.

    • Wave Rock – resembles a giant wave of multicoloured granite and an ancient landscape, which is also the subject of fascinating Indigenous Dreamtime stories and the site of Indigenous rock art.

    • Cruise the Recherché Archipelago and the waters to Woody Island Nature Reserve – spot fur seals, sea lions and dolphins, as well as a range of birds including Cape Barren Geese and White-breasted Sea Eagles.

    • Pink Lake – an important birding area due to its populations of Hooded Plovers and Banded Stilts.

    • Fitzgerald River National Park – nearly 20 per cent of Western Australia’s flora species are found in the park, many of which are endemic.

    • Stirling Range National Park – a beautiful mountain landscape with a stunning and diverse range of wildflowers.

    • Waychinicup National Park and Two Peoples Bay Nature Reserve – boasts unspoilt coastal scenery and an excellent spot to hear and hopefully see the rare Noisy Scrubbird.

    • Karri forest – visit the Tree Top Walk and the Old Empire Walk in the Valley of the Giants.

Australia is renowned as being one of the world’s botanical ‘hotspots’, and the Mid West is no exception. Following the winter rains, WA wildflowers burst into bloom and transform the rugged golden outback into a brightly-coloured landscape. This unique storehouse of biological diversity is due to the age of the West Australian landmass. It is one of the most ancient and undisturbed geographic locations in the world, resulting in the survival of primitive forms of plants and the evolution of more specialised species.

This tour showcases the magnificent diversity and abundance of flowering plants north of Perth when they should be at their colourful best. It covers a diverse array of landscapes, from the farmlands of the wheat belt and the gorges of the Kalbarri National Park to the northern sandplains around Eneabba, Badgingarra and the Lesueur National Park.

Our botanist guide will provide expert interpretation throughout the tour.

Highlights:• Travel on Western Australia’s world-famous wildflower route.• Dalwallinu – renowned for having the widest variety of wattle species

(acacias) found anywhere in the world and the first stop on Wildflower Way.

    • Coalseam Nature Reserve – a botanical hotspot showcasing a broad range of annual and perennial wildflowers.

    • Eneabba Wildflower Drive – one of the largest and most striking wildflower displays in Western Australia.

    • Kalbarri – visit stunning gorges and walk amongst the coastal wildflowers.

    • Northern Kwongan – a sandplain heath with sweeping carpets of brightly coloured flowers.

    • Lesueur National Park – one of the richest sites for plant species in the world (over 800 species).

    • Nambung National Park – travel through the spectacular Pinnacles Desert, one of WA’s best-known landscapes, scattered with thousands of limestone formations called pinnacles.

Highlights:• Mount Augustus. • Kennedy Range.• Murchison country and Coalseam

Conservation Park.• Karijini National Park – Offers dramatic

rugged scenery and ancient geological formations with striking gorges and stony tree-lined watercourses winding their way over the plain.

    • Hamersley Gorge – a dramatic gorge, full of colour, texture and reflections. It’s also an excellent spot for a swim.

    • Kalamina Gorge – not the largest in Karijini, but one of the most picturesque. A five-minute walk takes you down a steep track to the base of the gorge.

We travel from Broome to Perth through WA’s typical outback country. Rugged ancient landscapes including isolated and harshly beautiful Karijini National Park, Mt Augustus and the Kennedy Range, are not places you can just swing by. Our 12 day tour from Broome to Perth, which coincides with the northern wildflower season, is an ideal way to explore all three in one go.

We spend three nights at the magnificent Karijini National Park, famous for its spectacular gorges, waterfalls and cool swimming holes. It boasts an abundance of plant life and is also home to a variety of marsupials, including the endemic Pilbara Ningaui (Ningaui timealeyi) and Little Red Antechinus (Dasykaluta rosamondae).

Measuring at over twice the size of Uluru, Mt Augustus is a dramatic peak. The stunning colours change at dawn and dusk; bright pink, orange and red with the occasional green reflect the changes in its mood. The vegetation is open mulga shrubland with several endemic plant species, including a native hibiscus, a Mulla-Mulla and a striking native foxglove.

The Kennedy Range is one of the world’s most ancient land formations, with delicate patterns on rock faces due to water and wind erosion. The area is a biological hotspot, from twisted fig trees in gorges and spinifex atop the plateau, to the wattles, mallee and wildflowers across the surrounding plain. The area is also home to wildlife and you may be lucky enough to see Euros and rock-wallabies living in caves.

Karlamilyi is Western Australia’s largest and most remote national park, and the Martu Aboriginal name for the area that straddles the Rudall River. The area is a harsh yet beautiful land steeped in a rich history and Aboriginal culture. It is one of only a few areas in Australia that remain seldomly visited by only a handful of hardy travellers, scientists, researchers and explorers. A mixture of trees and shrubs covers the dunes, rocky flats and hills. You will also find eucalypts, including river red gums and coolabahs, around watercourses. The most commonly seen animals in the park are birds; more than 90 species, including waterbirds, have been recorded there.

After spending four full days in the park, we travel through the Great Sandy Desert to the Oakover River and our campsite at the picturesque Carawine Gorge. We then travel westward to Marble Bar and explore the natural history near to this historic town. Our homeward journey to Perth takes us through the outback towns of Meekatharra, Cue and Mt Magnet, as well as the ghost town of Big Bell and the culturally significant Walga Rock.

Highlights:• Arid zone flora & fauna including the Painted Finch, Peregrine and

Brown Falcons.• Four days in Karlamilyi National Park – staying in spectacular campsites

near wildlife supporting waterholes.• Tjingkulatjatjarra Pool – a picturesque waterhole along the Rudall

River that is shaded by white trunked gums and is excellent for wildlife spotting.

    • Camp at Desert Queen Baths – a series of permanent spring-fed freshwater rock pools known for their Aboriginal art, gorge walks and water holes for swimming.

    • Two nights at Carawine Gorge – an excellent spot for bird watching. • Take a swim at Running Waters, an oasis in the bush with crystal clear

water.• We visit Marble Bar, Australia’s hottest town and have dinner at the

iconic Iron Clad Hotel (at own expense). • Visit the historic towns of Cue, a gold rush town with a rich heritage,

and Big Bell, now a ghost town but once a flourishing gold mining town. • Walga Rock – Australia’s second-largest monolith containing the most

extensive gallery of Aboriginal rock paintings in Western Australia.

Western Australia’s Kimberley region is one of the most remote and unspoiled wilderness areas in the world. Its unique geology, vibrant Aboriginal culture and diverse flora and fauna have fascinated visitors for many years.

We spend three nights at Purnululu National Park and the Bungle Bungle Range, one of the most fascinating geological landmarks in Western Australia. More than 130 species of bird reside within Purnululu, including Rainbow Bee-eaters, flocks of Budgerigars and Australian Bustards. The Nail-tail wallaby and the Euro live around the range, while Short-eared Rock wallabies live on top.

We will also spend two nights on the Mitchell Plateau, visiting the magnificent Mitchell and Mertens Falls. Landscapes around the plateau vary from mangroves and swamps to woodlands and lush rainforest patches. The rugged sandstone areas are home to some rare residents like the small rock wallaby called a Monjon, the Rough-scaled Python and the elusive Black Grasswren. The area also has a rich indigenous history. Wunambal Aboriginal people have lived in the vicinity for tens of thousands of years, and the plateau offers many excellent examples of ancient rock art.

Highlights:• Three nights at Purnululu National Park and the Bungle Bungle Range.• Visit Parrys Lagoon National park – a haven for a variety of waterbirds.• Camp at Home Valley Station, a 700,000 acre outback oasis on the

banks of the Pentecost River.• Camp at the beautiful Miners Pool Campsite on the banks of the

Drysdale River Station.• Wandjina and Bradshaw (Gwion) Aboriginal art sites.• Visit the iconic Mitchell Falls.• Two nights at Mornington Station in search of the Gouldian Finch and

the Purple Crowned Fairy Wren; also visit and swim at Dimond Gorge.• Camp at Silent Grove and take a relaxing swim at Bell’s Gorge.• Visit stunning Windjana Gorge and explore Tunnel Creek as it flows

through a limestone cave system (the oldest caves in Western Australia).

15 Day Camping West Australian Outback Expedition Ex Perth – Perth. Max of 6 passengers.

    TrackBLD

Day 13 & 14 Norseman to Hyden Area via Granite Woodlands Trail

    BLD

Day 15 Hyden Area to Perth BL

This outback expedition is no ordinary adventure due to the history of the tracks we travel on. We follow two tracks, completed in 1962 by Len Beadell (regarded as the “last real Australian Explorer”); the Anne Beadell Highway (named after his wife) and the Connie Sue Highway (named after his daughter). He surveyed these and many other outback tracks of Central Australia.

The highways pass through remote desert areas but don’t be confused by the “highway” tag. These tracks are rarely used and often narrow, twisty and sandy, but are well worth the adventure.

The trip departs from Perth and heads to Neale Junction via Laverton on the Anne Beadell Highway, before heading south on the Connie Sue to Cocklebiddy. We have allowed seven days to travel these tracks so we’ll have plenty of time to explore the area’s wildlife and breathtaking terrain.

We will spend three nights at the Eyre Bird Observatory exploring the wildlife and history in this peaceful and strikingly scenic outpost.

Making our way back to Perth we will have two days on the Granite Woodlands Discovery Trail which passes through one of the most extensive temperate woodlands left in the world.

Highlights: • Travel the historic and rugged Anne Beadell and Connie Sue Highways

built by Len Beadell • Eyre Bird Observatory – stay in the lovely old stone building nestled

between leafy woodlands and striking white dunes within walking distance of the beach.

    • Granite Woodland Trail – a collection of kwongan heath, mallee scrub, eucalypt woodlands, granite outcrops and salt lakes.

9 Day Camping Golden Outback Expedition Ex Perth – Perth. Max of 10 Passengers (6 in 2 lead vehicles & 4 in up to 2 tag alongs).

Day 1 Perth to Coolgardie area LD Day 2 Coolgardie area – Kalgoorlie – Lake Ballard BLD Day 3 Lake Ballard BLD Day 4 Lake Ballard – Rowles lagoon – Credo Station BLDDay 5 Credo Station BLD Day 6 Credo Station to Helena Aurora Ranges BLD Day 7 & 8 Helena Aurora Ranges BLD Day 9 Helena Aurora Ranges – Baladjie Rock – Perth BL

Visit the old towns of the gold mining days and regions rich in history. In the 1890s thousands of locals and migrants tried their luck with gold prospecting. Relics from the past, equipment, old shanties, stone buildings, mine frames and their belongings are scattered throughout the early settlements.

We will visit the Kalgoorlie open cut mine and Lake Ballard. We also explore the Helena & Aurora Ranges (the Aboriginal name ‘Bungalbin’), a magnificent banded ironstone formation and one of the last ranges in the whole Yilgarn region. At 2.6 billion years old, it’s ancient, it’s unique, and there are species here that are not found anywhere else on earth.

Highlights:• Lake Ballard – walk among the Gormley outback sculpture installation. • Niagara Dam Conservation Park – enjoy bird watching at this remote

man-made waterhole.• Credo Station Campsite – a former pastoral station and now a

    Conservation Reserve.

    • Rowles Lagoon – the only freshwater wetland within the Goldfields and a haven for waterbirds.

    • Helena and Aurora Ranges – recently protected and one of the last examples of banded ironstone still left in Australia. They are a sanctuary for many birds, reptiles, mammals and plants, some of which you can’t find anywhere else on earth.

Rarely visited by tourists, the Gibson Desert is vast with undulating sand plains, dune fields and gibber plains. The vegetation is mainly mulga and other mixed shrubs over spinifex.

On this 4WD adventure, we will travel on the iconic Len Beadell’s outback roads. But don’t let the “road” tag fool you, as the majority of these roads are unkept outback tracks. Experience the country in almost the same natural state as the early explorers Carnegie and Giles saw it, but without the hardships that they endured.

Highlights: • Gunbarrel Highway – a rough desert track built by Len Beadell; it was

the first road built going from west to east through the centre of the continent.

    • Mangkili Claypan Nature reserve – home to a range of migratory birds. • Visit Aboriginal communities• Gary Junction Road – the location of the Len Beadell Plaque.• Lake Cohen – when holding water, this can be an excellent site for

birdwatching and spotting other wildlife. • Warakurna – visit the Giles Meteorological station.• Sandy Blight Junction Road – travel through ranges, dunes and desert

Oaks with spectacular scenery. Len Beadell called this road his Central Australian showcase.

Join us as we explore some of the most isolated areas in northern Western Australia and the Northern Territory. The scenery is spectacular, with ancient landscapes, scenic gorges, extensive dunes, lakes, wetlands and clear starry night skies.

We visit Newhaven Station, a wildlife sanctuary managed by the Australian Wildlife Conservancy, situated on the junction of three bioregions (the Great Sandy Desert, MacDonnell Ranges and Burt Plain). It is home to a diverse array of arid zone plants and at least 138 species of birds.

Our adventure has many highlights, but our detour off the Tanami Road to Mulan and Lake Gregory is one of the most exciting. This lake system is a RAMSAR site, due to the vitally important role it has for migratory birds travelling to and from Australia. The Black Necked Stork, large groups of Brolgas, Black Swans and Spoonbills are regularly seen on and around the lake, which is also home to Dingoes and a variety of other mammals.

Highlights:• The Tanami Road crosses the vast expanse of the Tanami Desert and

will delight nature lovers and bird watchers.• The West MacDonnell Ranges are known for their beauty and scenic

gorges. They also provide refuge for many plants and animals.• Newhaven Reserve is a hotspot for the wildlife of Central Australia and

the scenery there is spectacular. • Lake Gregory’s (Paruku) remote freshwater wetland is renowned for its

prolific birdlife, supporting over 70 species of waterbirds. • Birdwatching at Lake Stretch. • Visit Wolfe Creek Crater, a well-preserved 880-metre-wide meteorite

crater that is over 300,000 years old (the second largest crater in the world).

    • Keep River National Park – a relatively small park but the scenery and landforms are just as dramatic as in the larger parks.

    • Enjoy an early morning bird watching cruise on Lake Argyle.

Its nickname, the “Galapagos of the Indian Ocean”, is due to its famous red crabs, sea birds, whale sharks and spectacular coral reefs. Almost two-thirds of the island is designated as national park. It is dominated by rainforest and substantially transformed with the presence of millions of land crabs. The crabs migrate from the central plateau to the shoreline and pay no heed to any obstacle, be it natural or man-made.

Our tour coincides with this unique natural phenomenon. David Attenborough once said, “the migration was the most amazing sight I have seen”.

The island has nine endemic bird species including the Christmas Island Frigate bird and the rare Abbott’s Booby. There are also reptiles and bats as well as many species of plants including palms, ferns, vines and pandanus.

Our Indian Ocean experience continues with three more nights on Cocos Islands, a known destination for vagrant shorebirds and an absolute paradise for any bird-enthusiast. They also offer an incredible array of marine life.

The waters surrounding Christmas Island and Cocos Keeling Islands are the home to a unique group of marine species found nowhere else in the world. Fish from both the Indian and Pacific Ocean meet in these waters and new species like the Cocos Pygmy Angelfish, an extremely rare dwarf fish, develop as a result.

The islands also have an absorbing history that makes up their colourful past.

Highlights: • Christmas Island:• Red Crab migration or spawning.• Birdwatching – there are hundreds of bird species, including the rarest

booby and frigate birds in the world; the Abbotts Booby and the Christmas Island Frigatebird.

    • Greta and Dolly beaches – stroll along a shady walk trail and enjoy the beaches.

    • Margaret Knoll lookout – superb views of the rainforest on the coastal terraces.

    • Boat trip to Flying Fish Cove – offers a diverse array of bird and marine life and take a swim off the back of the boat.

    • The Grotto – a natural limestone feature connected to the ocean which is lovely for a swim.

    • The Dales – constant flowing streams are ideal environments for the Blue & Robber crabs. You can also take a refreshing shower under a waterfall.

    • A visit to the blowholes to witness the extent of the Red Crab migration.

    • Cocos-Keeling Islands:• Well known for vagrant shorebirds.• An incredible array of marine life.• West and Home Islands.• Take a motorised outrigger canoe trip for a unique and exciting way to

discover the Southern Islands.• Farewell beach BBQ on Canoe Beach.

  • INTERNATIONAL TOURS

16 Day Accommodated Madagascar Wildlife ExpeditionEx Antananarivo – Antananarivo. Max 12 Passengers.

Domestic flights included (international flights not included).

Madagascar - a place where “evolution ran wild,” as Sir David Attenborough so aptly describes it.

Eighty-eight million years ago Madagascar split from what is now India, allowing flora and fauna to develop and evolve in isolation. As a result, the island showcases unique biodiversity, and 90% of its wildlife are not found anywhere else on Earth.

This island nation is a nature lovers dream unlike any other place in the world, offering a myriad of discoveries.

The iconic lemurs of Madagascar are thought to be descendants from a common ancestor similar to Africa’s bushbabies; today there are about 70 species and subspecies living on the island. The island is also home to a variety of other wildlife including bats, mongooses, hedgehogs, tenrecs, endemic birds and reptiles (including the worlds largest and smallest chameleons), as well as 6000 species of plants.

We visit three distinct ecosystems, the rainforests of the east, the dry deciduous forests of the west and the semi-arid “spiny forest” of the south. Each ecosystem is home to a range of unique wildlife adapted to make the most of their surroundings.

Our tour is in November when the weather is not too hot, the jacarandas are in flower, the lemurs have babies, and the country is alive with wildlife.

    Highlights:• Andasibe-Mantadia National Park – this 155 square kilometres

protected rainforest is home to many of Madagascar’s endemic and endangered species including 11 species of lemur. The rainforest is also a great location to view birds, reptiles (including chameleons), colourful frogs and butterflies.

    • Avenue of Baobabs – this area is unique due to the abundance of Baobab trees. The spectacular landscape is almost alien in its appearance.

    • Kirindy Forest – this private reserve is approximately 100 square kilometres of deciduous forest. It is much drier than Andasibe-Mantadia and offers a diverse ecosystem with more unique endemics.

    • Berenty Reserve – this private reserve is located along the Mandrare River in the semi-arid “spiny forest” ecoregion of southern Madagascar. This reserve is a great location to spot a large variety of wildlife as well as many of the countries endemic birds.

10 Day Accommodated Botswana Wildlife Safari Ex Maun – Kasane. Max 12 passengers.

Domestic flights included (international flights not included).

Join us in Botswana during the green season when the rains transform the brown winter landscape into a lush green wonderland. Full-leafed acacia trees cast deep, cool shade over rolling green lawns; flowers leap up out of the sand, and crusty salt pans turn into shimmering wetlands full of honking waterbirds. The wildlife is looking fit and healthy. There’s an explosion of new life as the young offspring born in November and December are still small, and it will be a treat to see this new life, especially in the Kalahari and Chobe areas. Bird watching is at its best as migrant species from Europe, Asia and other parts of Africa are in abundance. Even non-birders will get caught up in the excitement.

With a maximum of just 12 guests, you will enjoy unlimited views and intimate wildlife encounters, not to mention the personalised service from our expert Botswana naturalists.

Highlights:• Twice daily game drives to see the area’s prolific wildlife. • Three nights spent in the Central Kalahari desert staying at Tau Pan

which sits on top of an ancient dune ridge with views over the Kalahari. • Fly to our private mobile camp in the Okavango Delta, where we spend

three nights.• Explore the Delta on game drives and boat cruises.• Three nights in Chobe National Park – Botswana’s first national park

and also the most biologically diverse.• Stay at Muchenie Safari Lodge, with beautiful views of the Chobe River,

the Caprivi Strip and seasonal flood plains.• Private cruise on the Chobe river, excellent for birding enthusiasts. • Private tour of the biodiversity centre in Kasane, which houses injured

or orphaned animals such as endemic snakes, small mammals and raptors including owls.

    • Optional two nights tour extension at Victoria Falls.

    INTERNATIONAL TOURS

14 Day Accommodated Borneo Wildlife AdventureEx Kuching – Kota Kinabalu. Max 12 Passengers.

Domestic flights included (international flights not included).

The natural beauty and unique wildlife of the Malay Archipelago inspired British naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace’s theories of natural selection in the 1800s.

You will be equally inspired when we travel to the Malay Archipelago in Southeast Asia, to the world’s third-largest island, Borneo. Jungles and rainforests dominate the landscape, and life flourishes beneath the forest canopy.

With some of the world’s oldest rainforests (second only to Australia’s Daintree Rainforest), it comes as no surprise that this rugged island is rich in biodiversity. Some 222 mammals, 420 birds, 150 reptiles, 100 amphibians and 394 species of fish call the island home.

We will also find what is probably Borneo’s most iconic species, the Orangutan (meaning “man of the forest” in Malay). They are highly intelligent creatures, sharing 96.4% of their genes with humans and are the only great ape to be

found in Asia. Today, wild populations only exist in Bornean and Sumatran rainforests, and so getting a glimpse of these gentle giants in their natural setting is a rare and beautiful opportunity.

We will also be on the lookout for pygmy elephants, clouded leopards, rhinoceros hornbills, saltwater crocodiles and the rare probosci’s monkeys.

Borneo is also home to 15,000 or so plants, including pitcher plants, orchids, conifers and rhododendrons. You will be delighted by the sheer variety of fauna and flora and the significant parts of the rainforest that remain intact, despite pressures from deforestation in recent decades.

Highlights:• Semenggoh Wildlife Centre and Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary – view

rescued semi-wild orangutans as they eat at their feeding stations in the rainforest.

    • Bako National Park – travel via boat to this unique area containing almost every type of vegetation found in Borneo; the plant life is beautiful, the wildlife abundant and there is an excellent chance of seeing the endemic and endangered Proboscis monkeys.

    • Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre – home to over 30 rescued sun bears.

    • Rainforest Discovery Centre canopy walk – 28 metres above the forest floor and great for bird watching.

    • Kinabatangan River – a wildlife hotspot within Borneo and the only other place to spot Proboscis monkeys at close range other than Bako National Park.

    • Boat cruises – ideal for wildlife spotting and bird watching.• Abai village – enjoy a local-style lunch and participate in a tree-

planting project. • Gomantong Cave – the largest bird nests cave in Sabah. • Lipad mud volcano – a large mineral salt lick used by wildlife. • Lipad Waterfall – take a dip in the natural pool and enjoy a refreshing

shower under the waterfall. • “Coffin Trail” – jungle trek leading to an ancient Kadazan-Dusun burial

    site and magnificent lookout point.

17 Day Accommodated Costa Rica Wildlife SafariEx San Jose – San Jose. Max 12 passengers.

Costa Rica’s name comes from the Spanish language meaning ‘rich coast’, as early explorers believed the mountains of Costa Rica to be filled with gold. Although they were wrong about the gold, Costa Rica is the ‘rich coast’ when it comes to flora, fauna and biodiversity. It may be a small country, but it is huge in nature, natural history and investment in the environment. A true paradise for lovers of the natural world! It has extraordinary biodiversity with over 500,000 different species, so it is little wonder that it is known as the birthplace of ecotourism.

Given the vastly different geography of Costa Rica, from coastal mangroves to forests in the clouds to the wide variety of plants and animals, what you will see in one day is jaw-dropping in this small country.

Highlights:• Lead by expert local naturalsits. • Carara Biological Reserve and a boat trip on the Tárcoles River to

observe one of the largest populations of American Crocodiles on the continent.

    • Boat cruise through the mangroves at the La Ensenada National Wildlife Refuge.

    • Cerro de la Muerte mountain – this magnificent mountain is part of the Cordillera de Talamanca range, which extends from eastern Costa Rica to western Panama, and is home to numerous endemic plants and animals.

    • Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge is 25,100 acres and is part of the Arenal Huetar Norte Conservation Area. It includes wetlands that host record numbers of migratory waterfowl. We will take cruises to see sloths, crocodiles, basilisks and many species of waterbird.

    • Savegre River, Central America’s cleanest river with lush rainforest, waterfalls and canyons, surround this stretch of coastal whitewater. Many tropical birds, including egrets, osprey, toucans, parrots, kingfishers and cormorants, occur in the rainforest.

    INTERNATIONAL TOURS

18 Day Accommodated Bhutan – The Last Shangri-La TourEx Bangkok – Bangkok. Max 12 passengers. Return Bangkok to Paro flights included (flights to & from

    Bangkok not included).

The Land of the Dragon, as Bhutan is known to its inhabitants, is a fiercely independent Himalayan kingdom where it seems that time has stood still. Bhutan carefully refrains from allowing mass tourism to preserve its unique environment and heritage.

Bhutan is one of the last strongholds of Tibetan Buddhism, and its peaceful and fun-loving people are proud and elegant, with timeless culture and dress.

Large Dzongs (beautiful medieval buildings that incorporate a monastery, village and fort in one) dot the countryside, along with Chortens (shrines) and Ihakhans (temples). A visit to the magnificent Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest) near Paro is a particular highlight.

Bhutan is rated as one of the top ten global hotspots in the world because of its pristine forests that provide habitats for a diverse range of wildlife. Over 600 bird species inhabit the unspoiled woods. The trees are wrapped in beautiful epiphytic orchids, lichens, ferns and mosses. The forests harbour some of the most exotic plant species of the eastern Himalayas, with over 50 species of Rhododendron, Magnolias and a wide variety of medicinal plants.

Home to snow leopards, blue sheep, red pandas, Asian elephants and tigers, Bhutan’s environment is rigorously protected.

It is a remarkable country that offers not only the exquisite Himalayan scenery but also its rich and ancient traditions.

In a world where disasters and conflict dominate the news, it’s nice to get away and find some relief and peace of mind. Nature travel can offer that, and some destinations, in particular, embody the peace and beauty that restore our spirit. Bhutan is one of them!

Highlights:• Visit the Punakha valley, a riot of colour with golden monasteries and

vibrant flowers.• The Punakha Dzong is a beautiful 17th-century fortress which sits at the

juncture of the Pho and Mo Chhu rivers.• Phobjika valley is gorgeous and peaceful, and home to the endangered

black-necked crane.• Royal Manas National Park – the oldest national park in Bhutan and

known as the “conservation showpiece of the kingdom” for its wide variety of wildlife and the endangered golden langur monkeys.

    • Yonkala is a small hamlet which has long been recognized as one of the hotspots for birding in Asia.

    • Drive over Dochula Pass – a mountain pass overlooking the Himalayas, where 108 shortens (stupas) exist in the memory of fallen Bhutanese soldiers.

    • Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest) in the Himalayan Mountains is one of the most important symbols of culture and religion in Bhutan.
