Page 2: SINAPI CHEST DRAIN - sinapibiomedical.comsinapibiomedical.com/downloads/scd_insert_nursing.pdf · ttach LP-suction Expanded bulb Attach low pressure (LP) suction Depress the bulb

For hemothorax: Look for blood visible in the drainage tubing.

For pneumothorax: Depress the bulb - the bulb must initially re-

expand. If it does not re-expand it confirms an absence of air at the catheter tip,

thus the catheter is not placed in the pleural space (or pneumothorax is resolved).

How to confirm chest catheter position

Hang device lower than the chest. Routinely drain

fluids via the bottom outlet tap before it overflows. If

necessary, you may lie device flat on the bed, as long as the

liquid in the reservoir remains less than the maximum volume

level. Hang next to the bed when unattended.

Gravity drainageMobileShorten the chest catheter to

prevent loops in tubing. For

pneumothorax, remove the

drainage bag.

A guide when to remove the chest catheter

Evaluate the above clinically and / or with chest X-ray

Depress the bulb until the bulb stays depressed. If the bulb re-expands, pinch

the tubing above the valve and then depress the bulb. Repeat the process until the

bulb stays depressed (up to 30x). For BP fistula (air-leak), attach external suction.

Increase the drainage rate (suction)

Depressed bulb

pinchtubing

You have to confirm two things:

1. Drainage volume must be low.

2. Depress the bulb: the bulb must stay depressed.

if bulb re-expands it confirms air in the pleural space / if bulb

stays depressed it confirms the opposite.
