Membranes for Cell Culture Applications Nanomembranes for Cell Culture Applications Specifications SiMPore’s nanomembranes for cell culture encompass a suite of ultra-thin materials offering superior permeability and industry-leading optical properties. These properties enable a wide array of cell culture experiments and are particularly well suited to barrier function, cell transport and migration, live cell imaging, and mechanism of action studies. A survey of key attributes for our membrane products for cell culture is provided in the table below.

These properties enable a wide array of cell culture experiments (see Select Publications below) and are particularly well suited to barrier function, cell transport and migration, live cell imaging, and mechanism of action studies.

Nanomembranes are available in an easily handled chip format (5.4x5.4x0.3 mm) that can be integrated into microfluidics and 24-well plates with available fixturing gaskets (see below).

A comparative imaging study between SiMPore nanomembranes and conventional track-etched polycarbonate membranes widely used in cell culture is provided below. From left to right, the images highlight the exceptional thinness of SiMPore nanomembranes, its superior optical properties in both phase and fluorescence imaging modes, and the utility for establishing in vitro barrier models.

Membranes for Assays & Filtration Applications Nanomembranes for Microfluidic Assays and Filtration SiMPore offers a range of nanomembranes with nanopores, micropores, or microslits that are ideally suited for assay development and filtration-based isolations.

Nanomembranes are available in an easily handled chip format (5.4x5.4x0.3 mm) that can be integrated into microfluidics via UV-ozone or oxygen plasma bonding techniques using available fixturing gaskets (see below). NPN Membranes

Membrane Gaskets

Silicone gasket kits are pre-cut sheets designed to assist you in better-integrating SiMPore nanomembrane chips into your cell culture or microfluidic system. The gaskets are made from platinum-cured polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) with 40° shore A hardness, ability for elongation up to 600% and glass-like translucency. These gaskets can be UV-Ozone, Corona discharge or oxygen plasma activated for layer-by-layer assembly of nanomembrane chip-incorporating devices. All pre-cut PDMS is left sandwiched between protective liners for maintaining integrity until liners are removed prior to use.

Flow Channel Gasket Kit • Glass-like translucent PDMS gaskets enable flow

cell applications. • 250 µm thick gasket layers ensure low channel

volumes. • Pre-cut for mounting on standard glass coverslips • Kits include pre-cut gaskets for 10 flow devices, 4

Membrane Information Silicon Nanomembranes

SiMPore’s suite of silicon nanomembranes enable novel research and experimental and assay capabilities in the life sciences and materials development industries.

Nanoporous Silicon Nitride (NPN) SiMPore’s innovative nanoporous silicon nitride (NPN) provides unparalleled permeability, optical transparency, and precision pore sizes – all in the same membrane material. Through a patented manufacturing process, nanopores are randomly created within a Silicon Nitride (SiN) layer of nanometer thickness. This process produces a very high pore density and thus highly permeable membranes. These NPN membranes are atomically flat and chemically inert, enabling markedly reduced biofouling and nonspecific interactions across a wide array of sample types.

Microporous and Microslit Silicon Nitride (SiN) SiMPore fabricates microporous and microslit membranes within low-stress silicon nitride layers deposited on prime-grade silicon wafers. These porous features are uniformly, photolithographically patterned and etched. Current products offer 10-20% porosity in a robust 400 nm thick membrane for demanding flow-based applications.

Microporous G-FLAT™ Silicon Dioxide SiMPore’s microporous G-FLAT™ silicon oxide membranes are manufactured with a patented method, yielding a flat, porous and glass-like layer. Current membranes are available with 5-20% porosity in a 300 nm thick membrane that is optically transparent like glass. These products are also directly patterned using photolithography, resulting in uniform pore sizes.

Common Membrane Chip Dimensions

Currently available nanomembrane chips feature a 5.4x5.4 mm, 310 µm thick silicon frame. Specific formats and related dimensions for various membrane thicknesses and membrane surface area per chip may be found in the reference table that follows.
