As a young kid I wanted to raise registered cattle. When I left for the Marines
in WWII, my father kept my few cows, after WWII, China and Korea, I came home
and really got serious about the breed. I had done some reading on a new breed
called Simmental, and purchased semen on Paresian, Bismark and others. I sold several steers that were 4-H Champions. I
was convinced and bred up to 7/8 and 15/16 and the calving problems got less. I eventually bred up to one of the first polled
bulls in 1976 “Polled Achilles Blazer”.
I met Parke and Nina Vehslage. We wanted Indiana to have a state association so we worked together to get it started.
I was elected President and served three years. I think by that time we were up to 60 members, the Vehslage’s and I worked
very hard those first years to get new members. I was presented the 2nd charter in Denver, stating Indiana became a State
member on August 2, 1972, and was presented a Lifetime membership on December 2, 1978.
Don Vaniman said “Jacque you are nominated by write in votes to run for Trustee in the East will you accept?” I paused
for a moment. He said “Jacque anything worth having is worth working for.” I finally said yes, I’ll do my best. I ended up
serving for three years and then another three years till 1983. I traveled a lot those six years promoting our breed and meeting many good people and breeders, some of the
best. I have many cherished memories from over the years with the Association, and was blessed to have been given the chance to serve.
In 1972 while Harold Duckworth was President of the Kentucky Association, I was asked to be at their annual meetings where I was made a Lifetime member of
Kentucky, then I had a speaking engagement at the Ohio Simmental State Association and Jerry Williams made me a Lifetime member of Ohio. While on the ASA board, I
wanted a Simmental show at the Kentucky State Fair and North American Show, so I called Harold Workman and he set up an appointment with the Kentucky Secretary of
Agriculture. At the meeting we were able to get across that with a show & maybe a sale would be a great promotion for our new breed and it has proven so today, I believe
Doug Parke and Jame Krieger agree. Most people had no idea how we got this started but when I see the great new breeders from all over especially the North American, it
makes me so proud of the tremendous strides of the breed. I call my breed!
Cliff Orley a long time friend, showed a few of my calves with some success but I have had to cut down due to age and old war injuries. However I have told Doug
Parke I want to donate a heifer in the North American Sale with proceeds going to the Indiana and Kentucky Junior Association as they are our future. When I think I have
the right animal for this and I can find someone to break her to lead as I can no longer do it. Anyway that’s my intentions as the breed and the membership have been good
to me and I feel the need to give something back.
I have known David Rockefeller and his deceased wife Peggy for many years and worked closely with Peggy while I was a Trustee, she always had a love for the
breed and her cattle. Peggy always had time to set down and discuss any Simmental problems and I must say she had a way of getting her point across in a friendly way,
she was a great Lady.
I was truly honored to find out David Rockefeller and I were being recognized, I never expected this and feel blessed to be remembered for my involvement with the
Association. You will never know how much I appreciate this.
To read Jacque Glenn’s entire autobiography, please visit the Simmental Breeders Sweepstakes website or Facebook page.
Having been in the Simmental business for over 3 decades,
Hudson Pines Farm was started with a commitment by the late Peggy
Rockefeller, who dedicated her life to the preservation of agriculture and
the advancement of the Simmental breed. Her husband, David, credited her
with “having a passion for farming and an interest in nurturing a breed of cattle that would be docile, milk well, could thrive on
available forage, and would raise outstanding calves every year.” After her passing in March of 1996, it was the desire of her
husband, David Rockefeller, to keep the farm going on the same vigorous path that she had set. Their Granddaughter, Miranda
Kaiser, was thrilled to become involved, and began partnering with her grandfather on the cow herd, and took on the role of
Executive Director.
Simmental cattle are a versatile breed of cattle originating in the valley of the Simme River, in the Bernese Oberland
of western Switzerland. Mrs. Rockefeller fell in love with the breed for their quiet and docile deposition and the significant
contribution that she felt they could make to the beef industry in the United States. She established her Simmental herd in 1975
and quickly became one of the original breeders of homozygous polled Simmentals. The farm has sold animals, semen, and
embryos to breeders in all 50 states and 14 foreign countries. Her customers have included the King of Morocco, and many Latin
American cattle barons. She even had her husband deliver straws of semen to Mikhail Gorbachev, former leader of the Soviet
Union, and to the Soviet Ministry of Agriculture.
Mrs. Rockefeller had a passion for preservation and responsible agriculture management of farmland nationwide,
and became a co-founder of the American Farmland Trust. Not only did Granddaughter Miranda become involved in the
cattle industry, she followed in her grandmother’s steps in becoming a board member of AFT for 15 years, and she has been
chairperson for the last 4 years.
In 2006, Hudson Pines Farm was awarded the Golden Book Award, the most prestigious honor given by the American
Simmental Association.
Hudson Pines Farm has had the honor of winning many championships in various venues such as the National Western
Stock Show in Denver, Simmental Breeders Sweepstakes in Louisville, The North American Livestock Exhibition in Louisville, and
the Ft. Worth Stock Show, as well as state fairs and expos around the country. This commitment to excellence continues today.
Hudson Pines Farm prides itself on standing behind their cattle and offer some of the best genetics in the Simmental industry.
Hudson Pines Farm has a great team, all working together to produce high quality Simmental cattle. We’d like to
acknowledge the following: Owner, David Rockefeller, Owner and Executive Director, Miranda Kaiser Hayes, General Manager,
John Walston, Farm Manager, Ryan Haefner, Herdsman, Jeff Querkboerner, Show and Sale Cattle, Tyler Babbs and Ryan Long,
Office personnel, Cheryl Walston and Megan Haefner. Hudson Pines Farm is one of the original founders of the Simmental
Breeders Sweepstakes, and today, is the only founder still in operation.
