Answers to Market Demands The aerospace industry is expected to experience continued growth in most segments for the foreseeable future. The target to deliver a product that meets all the technical and perfor- mance requirements at cost and on schedule challenges OEMs and their suppliers to continuously transform their extended supply chains to opti- mize total productivity while maintain- ing a highly dynamic and virtual work force. In the aerospace industry, programs are becoming more complex, bids are more challenging and customer priori- ties are changing. The need for newer technologies, such as composites for more fuel-efficient aircraft, will con- tinue to grow. Aerospace companies also have to manage regulatory requirements to make sure design and manufacturing practices are documented and trace- able. The need for greater program performance has never been so critical for aerospace companies. Aerospace companies are trying to find a more efficient way to enhance collaboration between design and manufacturing. The industry needs a process-driven product lifecycle man- agement approach to include manu- facturing engineering in every aspect of program development. This can drive profitability, reputation and prove the firm’s ability to drive suc- cessful program execution. Trends With the changing dynamics in the in- dustry, aerospace manufacturers and Tier 1 suppliers are gradually becom- ing large integrators of airplane pro- duction. This enhances risk-sharing be- tween suppliers and buyers, including suppliers from low-cost regions in the value chain, and increases the need for transparency in aircraft programs, plans and schedules. OEMs are working towards a business model where they will need to work with fewer Tier 1 suppliers and de- crease direct interactions with Tier 2 and Tier 3 suppliers. All this is producing a number of com- mon trends among aerospace FTS manufacturers: Increase in production rates by ma- jor aircraft makers will place intense pressure on every part of the supply chain.
