    SILVERBOX EP REVIEW

Silverbox are an upcoming rock band that are proving themselves as they go along. With agrowing fanbase and a growing number of songs, they are living up to their potential. ThisEP is special. You arent getting a standard run of the mill collection of songs. From theopener, Anomaly to the closing track Volatile Rose, every song on the EP is killer. Thereare several bands who have tried to diversify a genre of music that is commonly distortedguitars, a blazing bass, a thunderous drum sound and vocals beyond the point ofbreathing. It is rare to see a band with the style of Silverbox with roots in rock, pop, metaland alternative sub-genres and the ability to go from heavy songs like Oblivion to heart-wrenching ballads, like Saudade and Volatile Rose.

Just from that alone, you get an idea of what this band are capable of.

In the opening track, Anomaly you can hear two distinct guitar tracks, one being acoustic. It is something up and coming bands should take notice of. The time for pop-punk driven, palm muted guitar sounds is over. You could easily listen to it on the way home from workor if you were going out somewhere. The vocals announce the band as a force to bereckoned with. Silverbox may be together for over a year but this is a band with ambitionsset high. You get the feeling when listening to the EP as a whole that this band isnt afraidto say what it is.

Oblivion, the second track on the EP says that in one word. A heavier song dripping withblood and attitude. Its a monster combination of guitar and bass distortion with poundingdrums and vocals that are haunting, yet motivating. Were all architects of our destiny. Weare the heirs to our conviction remains a statement for this band. Its inspiring, despite thefact you only pick up on it after a few listens. Its a great way of tying together what startedas a heavy song and ends almost as a confession, which leads into Saudade.

Saudade, is the third track and for me, its a personal favorite. The vocals are tortured andheart-wrenching. The guitars accompanying them harmonise with words and makes it apower ballad. However, it brings in heavy guitars and a guitar solo that will have you goingback to hear it over and over. If guitars can speak in their own way, these guitars have twopersonalities and both of them get to show themselves against the vocals and rhythmsection. The lyrics are so poetic in style I know its an issue, and I dont mean to miss you,but I do that every time you hear the song, it stays with you. Its such a strong song that bythe time, you go further in the EP, you dont want to go back. You arent leaving till theend.

Under The Radar is their Immigrant Song. With catchy lyrics, heavy drumming anddriving guitars, its almost a punk song. The guitars are backed by the vocal melodieswhich feed into the song perfectly. The drumming shows heavy Bonham inuence andagainst the guitars and vocals, the attitude comes out perfectly. Its a short song, but its agreat piece of music. The twin-guitar rifng throughout the song, coupled with the backingvocals and rhythm section brings out each player in the band at their best. It is a song that

is hard to ignore once the drum beat kicks in. Under the Radar is a song you can bangyour head to and you wont regret having pain the next day.

The rst thing I think about when I hear Tortuga is the ctional town from the Pirates OfThe Caribbean lms. Youre expecting a nod to pirates and the voice of an outlaw. Thedrums lead to a chanting chorus We are the voice of revolution is a statement if anything. Its a collective collaboration. Each member is fully utilised and gets a chance to show theirabiliy, both musically and vocally. The lead vocals are backed perfectly with backing vocalsat one point in the song, where the drums are the instruments playing through it. Then thesong picks up leading into the coda. It is a magnicent piece of music that highlights thepossibilities for this band. Its the longest song on the EP but with strong vocals, blazingguitars and thunderous drummming, it is a masterpiece.

The nal track, Volatile Rose (Rehearsal Guide) is where the collective energy is savedfor. It is a piano driven song, with heartbreaking and haunting lyrics. Its the great song thatElton John never wrote. Whether youre young or old, its one of those songs that stayswith you. Its universal and it relates feelings of love and heartbreak through strong vocalsand piano melodies. Its a power ballad, minus an extensive guitar solo and the feeling of aJourney song which is great because it doesnt need it. Towards the end of the song, thebacking vocals become more prominent and you can hear the whole band together. Its asong that may not have several instruments within it, but it only adds credibility to the

band. Just on its own, the song is a great way of showing the musicality that Silverbox arecapable of.

I enjoyed the EP as a whole. I think its a great way of showing people that good musicdoesnt consist of the X Factor generation. I think, if given the opportunity and the growingstrength of this band as a whole, I wouldnt be surprised if they were signed to a majorlabel in the future. The Silverbox EP could easily sit in any playlist or record shelfalongside Led Zeppelin, GunsNRoses, Metallica, Nirvana, Biffy Clyro, Kasabian or DeepPurple records. Its a lethal dose of rock and metal combined with pop and alternativeedges. Whether you like rock or pop music, it is a catchy record. From the beginning toend, the band bring their A game and by the end of Volatile Rose you want to hear more. Its like being left on a musical cliffhanger waiting for the next installment.

Id recommend the EP to people who like rock, pop, metal or alternative music. It bringstogether several musical inuences to the band and you feel them throughout the songs. Its a great example of what music is capable of when given a chance to ourish. I think itsalso a great reminder that you dont have to follow the standards of the music industry toproduce great music. The Silverbox EP is the beginning for this band. The best is yet tocome.
