Our Volunteers Rock

Thanks to our many volunteers who consistently go above and

beyond in their service and dedication. Our volunteers make the

Senior Center a great place to be. I am especially grateful be-

cause you have been a great deal of assistance to me in my first

2 months on the job. Because of you and your efforts, we are

able to offer many programs and services to help seniors have

fun, learn new things, stay healthy and independent. Our hats

are off to those of you who help the staff, your assistance makes

our jobs so much easier. A special thank you to the volunteer

Board of Directors, your support for the center and for me per-

sonally is sincerely appreciated.

National Volunteer Week is April 10-16. To celebrate and rec-

ognize you, we have a small token of appreciation for each of

you. Please stop by the office any time during the week of April

10-16 and pick up your gift. Everyone who comes by will be

entered into a drawing for a $140 gift card for a vehicle detail

from Jackie Cooper Imports & Nissan. I look forward to seeing

you then!

June

“Volunteers are the only human beings on the face of the earth

who reflect this nation’s compassion, unselfish caring, patience

and just plain love for another.”

Free Document Shredding Event

WHO: Broken Arrow Police Department, American Document Shredding and the Better Business Bureau

WHAT: Free Document Shredding Event

WHEN: Friday, April 29th 9:00-2:00

WHERE: Broken Arrow Community Center, 1500 So. Main St., Broken Arrow

BAPD booth inside in conjunction with the Broken Arrow Seniors Health Fair

WHY: Identity theft and fraud crimes are on the rise. The City of Broken Arrow wants to help you avoid becoming a victim

of identity theft and fraud by keeping your personal information away from the hands of thieves. One of the methods

thieves use to steal your information is combing through recycling and garbage for sensitive information that has

been thrown away. The Broken Arrow Police Department recommends and encourages citizens to use a shredder

(preferably cross-cut) for sensitive documents, such as credit card statements, financial statements, pre-approved

credit card offers, old IRS tax forms, bank checks, household bills, etc.

The American Medicine Chest Challenge

Americanmedicinechest.com Dispose of Your Unused, Expired Prescriptions

WHO: Broken Arrow Police Department

WHAT: Prescription Drug Drop Off

If these items are submitted in the original containers personal information should be crossed off. If this is

not possible, submit the medication in clear bags. Medication could be current or expired unwanted/no

longer needed medications.

We will not accept IV bags, needles, bloody or infectious waste, pharmaceutical waste not generated by households,

radioactive pharmaceuticals or vaccines.

WHEN: Friday, April 29th 9:00-2:00pm

WHERE: Broken Arrow Community Center, 1500 So. Main St., Broken Arrow

BAPD Booth inside in conjunction with the Broken Arrow Seniors Health fair

WHY: According to the 2006 National Survey on Drug Use and Health conducted by the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), every day, 2,500 youngsters age 12 to 17 try a painkiller for the first time, and teen’s abuse prescription drugs more than any illicit street drug except marijuana. A vast array of pharmaceuticals—including antibiotics, anti- convulsions, mood stabilizers and sex hormones—have been found in the drinking water supplies of at least 41 million Americans, according to an Associated Press investigation. The Broken Arrow Police Department wants to keep dangerous pills out of the hands of minors and out of our water supplies.

BUNCO Strictly speaking, Bunco is a game of dice, played in rounds.

Players take turns rolling the dice and trying to accumulate as

many points as possible to win each round.

The game is played at tables of four in competing teams of two.

Players score points by rolling three dice and trying to match the

number they're supposed to roll for that round.

They get a point for each die that rolls the number, and if all three

roll the number, they score 21 points. They also score 5 points for

rolling three of a kind of any other number. They get to keep roll-

ing as long as they score one or more points with each roll. 5

Once they fail to score they pass the dice to their left and the op-

posing team gets a chance to score. 5

During each round the teams at the Head Table try to score 21

points. The first team to score 21 points wins the round and play stops. At all other tables play stops when the Head Table play

stops and the team with the highest score at each lower table wins

the round. 5

At the end of the round players change seats, the winners at each

of the lower tables move up a table, and the losers at the head

table move to the lowest table. Players also switch partners at the

end of the round, so you never play with the same partner twice

in a row.

During play, players track the number of rounds they win and

lose as a team, and the number of Buncos scored individually, on

their personal scorecard. At the end of the night wins/losses and

Buncos are tallied and prizes awarded.

COME JOIN US FOR OUR SPECIAL BIG BUNCO ON

APRIL 28TH 12:30~2:30PM

Attention Quilters…... Please join Toni Booth for an “Organizational Meeting” on Friday April

8th from 1:00 pm to approximately 2:30 pm in the Library at the Broken

Arrow Senior Center to discuss strategies and share thoughts.

There is no need to call or sign up, just come to the meeting if you're in-

terested. I am so excited to meet with you and I look forward to sharing

your strategies and thoughts as we continue through life “One Stitch at a

Time”

WOW ! Thank you to everyone for all your support with all the side dishes at

Potluck. Great Job! There were plenty of side dishes for everyone and

such a variety.

The staff had many good reports. The fried chicken, sponsored by Hope

Hospice, was finger-licking good. Thank you Hope Hospice.

And ALL the side dishes were tasty and there was plenty for everyone to

sample from each. Thank you, everyone, for your great support!

For April we need casserole dishes, vegetables, baked beans and green

salads.

Keep up the good job! See everyone April 8th.

Let The Fun Begin

Broken Arrow’s Mayor, Mike

Lester, will help kick off our Cele-

bration Week with an official proc-

lamation of Senior Week at BASI’s

Monday Night Kick-off Dance on

April 25th, starting at 6:30 p.m.

~~~~~~~~~~
Live music by one of the metro area favorites, The
Round-Up Boys, will take us back in time with the West-
ern Swing sounds that put Tulsa and the Cain’s Ballroom
on the music map back in the 1930s and 40s. The band
performs the Bob Wills classics, including some Porter
Wagoner, Ray Price, and even some original tunes
thrown in, but according to lead singer Bob Fjeldsted,
“it’s all Western Swing.”
The Round-Up Boys were
also named the Best Country
Act at both the 2003 and 2004
Spotnik Music Awards in
Tulsa.
This will be a dance to be
remembered!
