Remember ALL RIDES Are Alcohol Free!!!
If you see one of our members enjoying adult beverages in our photos, it is either not a riding event, or in the event of an overnighter, we have reached our destination. For any questions or
concerns about a ride contact our Lead Road Captain Jim “Speedo” Larson [email protected]
Here we are in fall, the leaves are changing colors, the air is crisp in the mornings, pleasant tem-peratures and the days are shorter. But this is the perfect time to ride! There are great rides on the chapter calendar. We are fortunate to live in an area of the country that we can ride 365 days a year. When I lived in Spokane, WA. I would put my HOG to rest in October and would not dust the cobwebs off until March, sometime April! So, come on out and ride and enjoy the year round riding that Las Vegas offers.
Also, as I said in the last newsletter all chapter officer positions are open, take the time to talk with current officers about the positions. You will find it is a very rewarding experience to be an officer and making a difference. We have two great local dealerships (LVHD & RRHD) that we call home. The staff and mangers at both dealerships care about us.

ROAD CAPTAIN’S NEWS
Safety Gear Whether you are on a long-distance ride or just taking a short ride around the corner, one of the most important things you can do is dress for safety. As a life-long dirt bike rider I have had ample opportunity to put theory into practice when it comes to protection during a fall. What I have learned (mostly the hard way) is that safety gear is the single most important investment for any motorcycle rider. I learned at a very early age that self preservation on a motorcycle begins with getting dressed. Dress for the weather and dress for the ride. Plan for the worst case and carry the gear you may need to encounter changing weather. Minimal riding gear con-sists of a helmet, gloves and boots. There is a myriad of other gear for your protection and com-fort. What you use is a personal choice based on your budget and sense of style.
Helmets are, without a doubt, the most effective gear you can wear in terms of safety. Proper fit is critical. Heads come in all shapes and sizes. Make sure to try on several helmets until you find one that fits your head properly. The helmet should be snug enough that you cannot turn it with your hands while holding your head still, but it should also still feel comfortable. Try a few helmets on for size, and check that the one you choose doesn't move too much in any direction, either side to side or up and down. Make sure
the helmet sits squarely on your head and check for pressure points that will become uncomfortable during the ride. If choosing a full face or modular hel-met be aware of the inherent reduction in peripheral vision. Make sure you can fully turn your head and neck to maintain your field of vision. Only purchase a helmet that meets Snell or Department of Transportation safety standards.
Your hands are the first thing to touch down in any crash. Motorcycle gloves should fully cover your fingers, palm, the back of your hands and your wrists. For a glove to remain on your hand in a crash, it needs a retention strap around the wrist. Consider this feature a minimum entry point for any riding glove. Look for strong, abrasion-resistant materials and strong, protected stitching. While most motorcycle gloves have special armor for the knuckles, it’s the
base of your palm that needs protection the most. Look for materials that will slide rather than catch on the pavement and that can provide some impact protection. Make sure any glove you choose allow you unimpeded operation of the controls. Protect your feet! Boots make a big difference. Motorcycle footwear is de-signed to give good traction on paved surfaces, be oil resistant, and not inter-fere with pegs, shifters, brakes and other appendages on your bike. In a riding boot, you want soles that prevent twisting. Frequently, that’s accomplished with a metal plate running through the sole. Strong heel and toe boxes also help lock your feet in and reduce the force of impacts to those areas. Armor over the ankle and shin protects those areas. Any boot considered for riding a motorcycle should lace tightly to a point above the ankle. Anything less and it will likely fly off in an accident.
Page 5
Even a minor spill on a bike can lead to major road rash if you are not suitably protected. Standard jeans or
other heavy pants will protect your legs from most of the bugs and dirt but if you are taking to the highways
and riding for speed, traditional jeans do not offer the resistance to abrasion that a well-designed
pair of motorcycle pants can provide. You can find armored jeans that combine good looks with
solid protection. Leather or synthetic materials such as Kevlar or Cordura offer superior abra-
sion resistance. A jacket is probably the most stylistic piece of safety equipment you can own.
There are limitless choices but you are best served by choosing one made specifically for motor-
cycle riding.
Again, synthetic materials or leather offer the most abrasion resistance for protection during a
fall. Body armor can absorb and distribute the energy transferred to the rider during a fall or
high-speed dismount. When possible, you should purchase gear with body armor incorporated into the design.
Comfortable, well-fitting outerwear will allow you freedom of movement to safely operate your motorcycle.
High visibility or fluorescent armbands, vests or other outerwear can also provide an additional level of safety.
Eye protection is another critical piece of safety equipment. Whether you wear corrective
eyewear or are blessed with perfect vision, protecting your eyesight is one of the most
effective things you can do to ride safely. Impact and wind-resistant sunglasses or gog-
gles or helmet shields are mandatory. Dirt, debris or insects impacting your eyes at any
speed can cause you to lose sight (temporarily or permanently). Regular annual eye ex-
ams should be considered mandatory for safe motorcycle riding. Reduced vision can lead
to an exponential decrease in ride safety.
The decisions you make in getting dressed before a ride, any ride, can lead to life altering consequences. In-
vest in quality, proper fitting safety gear and use it for its intended purpose. Get out and ride, there is very little
in life that can give you the same feeling of freedom and peace.
