The Silliman University Library held a training-workshop on basic organi-

zation of library resources for librarian–designates from public elementary and

high schools of the Division of Dumaguete City from May 23-24, 2013 at the

American Studies Resource Center. This is an outreach program of the Li-

brary to help public school teachers who do not have any library science

background but are given part-time assignment in the library. During the

training-workshop, the participants were taught basic knowledge in cataloging

and classifying books, organizing pamphlets, pictures and newspaper clippings,

indexing periodical articles, and filing.

The resource persons and workshop facilitators were the SU librarians

who willingly and enthusiastically shared their expertise with their colleagues

Candau-ay Elementary School and Balugo Elementary School have been added to the list of benefi-

ciaries of the SU Library-First Presbyterian Church of Ann Arbor, Michigan joint extension program. Last

June 7, 2013, Candau-ay received 436 while Balugo got 435 volumes of children's books. These books

were donated by the First Presbyterian Church which the Library processed and distributed to the schools.

The thrust of the program is to develop in the children the love for reading. Aside from these two(2), six

(6) schools have earlier been recipients also of books from the Library extension program. These are the

Babajuba, Hermenegilda F. Gloria, Camanjac, Amador Dagudag, Cantil-e, and Ramon Magsaysay Memori-

al Elementary Schools.

Lorna T Yso, University Librarian, attended the 40th Annual General Assembly of

the Academic Libraries Book Acquisition Systems Association Inc. (ALBASA) on May 28-30,

2013 at the Sacred Heart Center, Cebu City. The three-day assembly included a book

fair, fellowship and two-day seminar with the theme “ALBASA @40: Building Resources and

Creating Partnerships.” The Assembly’s objectives were to rekindle and preserve the lega-

cy of ALBASA as an association, to create an avenue of partnership, support the collec-

tion development of member libraries, serve as a forum for librarians and other stake-

holders in the information industry to address some mutual concerns, and to acquaint

participants on the latest publications and information packages available in the various

disciplines.

Sarah Mae B. Salares and Sarah Angiela A. Ragay, Catalogers, participated in a three-

day national training on RDA, the new cataloging code, with the theme “Resource Descrip-

tion and Access (RDA) Essentials: Preparing Libraries for New Cataloging Standards and

Guidelines” on June 26-29, 2013 at Montebello Villa Hotel, Cebu City. The participants

were trained to apply the new cataloging standards in creating bibliographic records for

monographs and other types of resources and to use the RDA toolkit. The changes from

Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules 2 (AACR2), the old cataloging code, to RDA were also

discussed.

The participants were expected to train other catalogers in their respective places.
