The Mirrorcube

A walkway amongst the trees leads up to the hotel – a cube with a glass facade mirroring the trees and the sky, enabling it to blend seamlessly into the forest.

The Treehotel is located in Harads, 60 km from the Arctic Circle, offering guests a unique experience with modern hotel rooms amidst Sweden’s unspoilt nature. The Treehotel’s rooms afford a fantastic view over the Lule River valley, kilometres of forest and the powerful river. Nestled among the pine trees, you’ll find the Mirrorcube. February 2, 2012AIT and Sika sign Strategic AllianceSustainable Cement and ConcreteWith a world production of about 3.3 billion tons, cement is primarily used as an ingredient in concrete, the world’s most widely used construction material. However, the manufacturing process of cement releases CO2 into the atmosphere, at a rate of 850 kg of CO2 for each ton of cement produced, thereby accounting for a total of 5% of the world’s CO2 emissions. The sizable impact cement has on our environment has prompted a number

Page 3 Sika Industry Magazine Sika Group News

of companies to seek new ways for more sustainable alternatives.

CleanCem™ Process“Construction markets worldwide are demanding innovation for more environmentally sustainable cement and concrete. Sika is committed to deliver the best technology to the market to help our customers produce a more sustainable product,” says Philippe Jost, Senior Vice President Concrete Producers at Sika, “Technologies such as AIT’s CleanCem™ process are an inherent part of Sika’s strategy towards the future of our industry.”

Conversion of coal ashAIT has conceived the CleanCem™ method to convert coal ash, a waste material, into a high value substitute for cement. Coal is the main source of power in some of the world’s largest economies, such as China, India and the US. Most of the 1 billion tons of coal ash generated every year is disposed of in landfills.

Cement production “Coal ash is a perfect material to substitute clinker, hence reducing CO2 emissions inherent to cement production, and the environmental toll of large ash disposal sites,” says Marc Zacharias, President and CEO of AIT. AIT’s proprietary technology treats coal ash while it is formed within the power plant. The result is an end product that unlike many of the other alternatives is highly cost-effective, and offers flexibility in production that allows for performance levels tailored to a number of end use applications.

Strong partnership“Sika’s innovative strength and wide footprint throughout the globe will help AIT to accelerate the implementation of our technology and to satisfy the pressing demand we are seeing in multiple markets around the world,” adds Zacharias.

January 10, 2012Robust growth in 2011 In the 2011 business year, Sika lifted sales by 15.5% in local currencies. This figure includes an acquisition effect of 3.8%. After conversion into Swiss francs, sales therefore rose 3.1% year-on-year to CHF 4.55 billion.Sika has expanded in all regions and witnessed

strong growth in the emerging markets of Asia/Pacific and Latin America. Sika also increased sales in the Region North America, winning additional shares in a fiercely fought market. Europe North reported double-digit growth due to weather conditions and thanks to Germany, Poland and Russia, while Europe South was able to maintain growth in the single-digit range on the back of the markets in France and the UK. Broken down by regions, Sika expanded as follows in 2011 in local currencies: Europe North 11.3%, Europe South 4.2%, North America 21.5%, Latin America 21.0%, IMEA (India, Middle East, Africa) 12.3%, Asia/Pacific 28.1%. The growth seen in North America and Asia/Pacific was significantly bolstered by acquisitions, accounting for 5.1% and 14.0% respectively.Sika made eight acquisitions in 2011. Taken together, the acquired companies achieved annualized sales of some CHF 240 million in 2010, placing Sika within its strategic target range. Sika usually targets companies for acquisition which provide it with better market access or which possess technologies that it can distribute though its global sales network. The proportion of sales generated by Sika in the emerging markets is at 36%.In local currencies, sales of products for the building and construction industry were up by 16.3% in the 2011 business year, with an acquisition effect of 4.2%. Sales of products for industrial manufacturing increased 12.0% in local currencies, including an acquisition effect of 2.3%.

Shaping the Future with SikaTechnology Day in Hamburg

This year‘s Technology Day for OES was held at Sika Automotive‘s freshly renovated and extended Technical Service Center in Hamburg, Germany. The event was a resounding success, not least thanks to the wholehearted commitment of all employees involved in the meticulous preparations.

Bonding as a key twenty-first-century technologyThe event kicked off with a talk by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christian Schäfers from Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences, who emphasized the pivotal role played by bonding as the technology of tomorrow. The numerous participants from the technical departments of our key customers received a comprehensive briefing on the trends and prospects for adhesive technology. After this introduction, the visitors were well prepared for the four subsequent workshops, during which they had a chance to gather practical experience. The balanced mix of theoretical background and hands-on demonstration proved a very lucid way of conveying the innovative technologies.

Reactive polyolefin hot-meltsIn the first workshop, the spectators were nothing short of dumbfounded by the excellent bonding results achieved without any pretreatment of the joined PP components. As the speaker explained the workings of the adhesive, the initial amazement gave way to the simple realization that the use of SikaMelt® obviates the need for any preparation of PP substrates. The advantages include shorter process times and vastly enhanced process security without any additional investment.

Exterior structural bondingThe second workshop took the form of a carefully structured presentation explaining which adhesive technologies are essential to lightweight construction and hybrid components. Not only do SikaForce® and SikaPower® offer a substitute for traditional joining methods, they also deliver major benefits where different substrate types need to be bonded together. One particular merit of structural bonding is that it achieves far superior force transmission in conjunction with lower material thicknesses.

Exterior elastic bondingThe focus of the third workshop was on the optimum construction of joints that are required to remain elastic. The multitasking capabilities of Sikaflex® and SikaForce® successfully convinced the participants that bonding and sealing are not mutually exclusive: here, the dual functionality cuts process times while broadening the component design options. Other potential advantages include lower-weight components, reduced costs and shorter production times.

Hot-melt film pre-coating/laminating dispersion adhesivesNo less intriguing for the customer representatives was the fourth workshop, in which they were familiarized with the advantages of film pre-coating and updated on the very latest developments in NMP-free laminating dispersion adhesives. Here too, the speakers successfully combined visually aided explanations with hands-on demonstrations to highlight the benefits of these technologies. The participants were themselves invited to try out some of the details that are central to their everyday work.

Technology day OES Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christian Schäfers

Page 5 Sika Industry Magazine Automotive OES

TeamworkFor our customers, the carefully pitched theoretical presentations and heavily practice-oriented workshops succeeded – within the space of a day – in casting new light on some of their projects. At follow-up meetings already arranged with customers, the newly acquired insights will be concretized and implemented in what will become new projects for Sika. This underscores the enormous potential of events such as Technology Day in exploiting Sika Automotive‘s credentials as a system partner to achieve long-term project success and fruitful customer relations. I should particularly like to mention the positive feedback from many of the participants in respect of our active corporate culture and teamwork. As one visitor put it, „When you attend a professional event like this, you immediately realize that this level of achievement depends on highly motivated employees who work as a team.“May I take this opportunity to thank all staff members who have shown, through their unstinting commitment, that their Sika triangle – like their heart – is „in the right place“!

Hybrid Power for your Windscreen Replacement

Sika introduces the Sikaflex®-556 windscreen adhesive, based on Sika’s unique PUR Hybrid Technology. PUR hybrids are isocyanate-free adhesives with a polyurethane backbone. This technology achieves the strength levels specified by car manufacturers, as well as offering the ease-of-application of MS Polymer adhesives.

In December 2011, Sika performed an FMVSS 212/208 crash test with Sikaflex®-556 at the Autoliv Crash Test Facility in Germany. Our market field engineer, Thomas Brodbeck, a trained specialist in auto glass replacement, carried out the installation on a Volkswagen Golf V. (As is our custom when conducting crash tests, an accident-free car with less than 100,000 km on the clock was used.)The installation was completed in the early morning under the supervision of TÜV Süd; the glass was prepared using Sika® Cleaner S (II) and Sika® Aktivator PRO. A total of 320 ml of Sikaflex®-556 was applied to the car body. After the windscreen was attached, the car was kept at 21°C and about 40% r.h. for 3 hours. It was then released and accelerated up to

50 km/h before it crashed into the rigid wall - as required by the FMVSS 212/208 test standard. Sikaflex®-556 came through the crash without any delamination and is now TÜV-certified.Sikaflex®-556 is ideal for windscreen replacements performed in a workshop. It combines ease-of-use with fast and reliable Safe Drive-Away Times. Owing to its composition - free of isocyanates, PVC and solvents - it meets rigid Scandinavian health and safety requirements.

About SikaSika is the market-leader in the AGR direct-glazing industry. The key to success with customers is our unique ability to provide three very valuables services: one, the lowest cost-per-installation system in the AGR industry when safety and liability are an issue; two, the most reliable technical field service for educating technicians; andthree, the most effective tools to help our customers grow their business.Innovation, coupled with the proven safety, reliability and ease-of-use of our products, makes the Sika system the number one choice among auto glass professionals.

Solutrans: The Place to be for Sika France and its Customers Cabreta wins award for its TIPP TOP dumpster vehicle using SikaPower® Technology

Sika France actively participated in the Solutrans road haulage and urban transport solutions show last December in order to highlight its position as one of the major players for bonding and sealing technologies in transportation.

On the back of the recovery seen by the road and urban transportation segment, Solutrans 2011 stood out as the major event for manufacturers of industrial vehicles and light trucks. The exhibition is marked by the dynamism and technological innovation that demonstrates why road haulage and urban transport are vital to every sector of the economy and daily life. At the show, Sika France rolled out two new products to facilitate vehicle maintenance:• SikaGard®-6680, a water based sound deadening and anti chip underbody coating.• Sikaflex®-553, a two-component adhesive and sealant for multipurpose assembly.

Sika France client Cabreta, a bodymaker with over 50 years of experience is one of the main builders of steel tippers on the French 3 to 4 tons public works truck and semi-trailer market. Cabreta was also exhibiting at Solutrans with the aim of establishing the company as the leading expert on tippers for light commercial trucks. It boasts a production volume of around 4.000 vehicles per year.

Our client received the Solutrans Technical Innovation Award in the industrial vehicles category for its TIPP TOP dumpster vehicle, which is 33% lighter than their traditional dumpsters.

The weight saving is thanks to the use of ultra high strength steel, which makes the vehicle 160 kilos lighter and enables an increase in transport loads as well as a reduction in fuel consumption.

This is possible because SikaPower® is used in the assembly process. Welding creates uneven surfaces on the light steel, which is 1-2 mm instead of the commonly used steel of 2–3 mm, depending of the vehicle part.

The successful application of SikaPower® in the Cabreta process lies in the fact that our product works on oiled surfaces without any pre-treatment and it contains glass balls to allow control of the thickness of the joint. SikaPower® is perfect for the BIW and powder coating process and does not require any adjustment. And more importantly, the bonding of the side panels on light steel spells a saving of 160 kilos on the dumpster alone.

Sika Marine Application Guide - Online

When spring is coming it is time for a lot of boat owners to start preparing their boats or yachts for the relaxing time at sea together with family and/or friends. These preparations often include some major refurbishments that can be complicated and have to be done correct in order to maintain the safety on board.

Therefore from beginning March Sika has launched an Application Guide on

www.sika.com/marineapplication

The Application Guide not only shows step-by-step how to make the refurbishment, but also where it is necessary to pay extra attention in order to avoid mistakes.

The Application Guide is a great help to the Do-It-Yourself as well as to the professional market. The distributor can show the applications in the store when selling the products but it is also a help for the applicator who can easily print it out from the web and bring it along to the jobsite to check the application is being done in a correct way.

The Internet-Site is build up to allow a download of the complete guide or only the needed chapters. Latest updates which have been implemented are always pointed out and directly implemented into the guide.

18-story high-rise with 2591 large timber/aluminum tilt-and-turn window units.

The building’s most striking features include the unusual colors and configuration of the facade, in particular the rhythmic arrangement of gold-anodized lesenes. The facade hosts a warm play of colors that shift in line with the daylight conditions, offering a counterpoint to the glass fronts of the neighboring office buildings.

The non-structural curtain walling comprises thermally insulated concrete spandrels with back-ventilated glass

panels, which are surmounted by windows: double-glazed insulating glass units are incorporated in the office component and triple-glazed units (Uw=0.82 W/m2K) on the residential stories, all in timber/aluminum. According to window manufacturer Baumgartner, a total 2591 windows were installed. A stick-system solution was adopted for the retail areas on the ground floor. The windows (Baumgartner Saphir HM 55 Integral) are structurally bonded assemblies incorporating Sika products and were chosen by the architect on account of their slender frames. The use of plastics windows was not considered acceptable.

Thanks to the continuous strip windows (all units openable) with low spandrel heights, every single apartment commands a magnificent view of Zurich and the surrounding area. The additional glass safety barriers on the exterior are hardly visible.

Incorporated on the rooftop are some 44 nesting places for alpine swifts: the birds are able to reach their accommodation through an opening in the facade. The first of these “tenants” are scheduled to arrive next spring.

Fascination Glass – A Great Experience

A new successful Sika Experience event took place from 23 January to 2 February 2012. The Marketfield Fenestration hosted one chemical and three civil engineers which the jury had chosen from among 70 applicants. The happy winners, Lenka Vosvrdova from the Czech Republic, Jihyun Yoo from South Korea, Rahul Meena from India and Alexandros Tolis from Greece, were accompanied by the British journalist Maria Jasiewicz.

Sika Schweiz in Zurich was the starting point. After the personal introductions, the participants learned about Sika, Marketfield Facade, -Fenestration Insulating glass, and our window technology. Following the theoretical part, a tour around R&D and the production area was organized. The following day, architect Beat Kämpfen made a presentation at his office and showed the group around several energy efficient reference buildings in the city of Zurich. Over the course of the next few days, the group visited the following

production sites, which they thought very impressive: Interpane in Seingbouse, France, produces about 800 tons of float glass a day. The four engineers were very impressed by the 800 meter long production hall, which had to be built from east to west in order to avoid being affected by the earth’s rotation. The next highlight was the BMW production facility in Munich, Germany. During the 4 km tour, the students learned a lot about bonding technology and automated production, points that are also gaining importance in window manufacturing. And last but not least, they learned about the production of windows at Internorm’s site in Sarleinsbach, Austria. Internorm is Europe’s leading window producer with about 1 million PVC and wood windows coming off the shelf annually. After their busy week, the group enjoyed a nice winter weekend in Wildhaus, Switzerland, with perfect, winter weather.

The second week began with practical work. In the silicone laboratory in Widen our students learned to produce their own insulating glass, and to bond a complete

window as well as some facade elements. This was an excellent experience. On Tuesday they travelled to the trip’s final destination – Sika Engineering Silicones in Milan, Italy – where they learned about silicone production.

These 10 days full of enthusiasm and excitement ensured that the 2000 km trip thorough 5 European countries was also a great and unique experience for us as hosts.

At the end of September, the first section of a train for Izmir Light Rail Line 2, produced by an important customer of Sika – CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Co., Ltd. – was shipped from the port of Shanghai, through the Strait of Malacca, across the Indian Ocean, and arrived in Turkey. This is the first high-end light rail project exported from China to Europe that this company has developed independently.

CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Co., Ltd. has always been an important customer of Sika. Sika’s products are mainly used for side glass bonding, front window glazing, fiberglass mask bonding and structural part bonding (side panels / roofs) as well as for internal and external sealing. Through cooperation with CSR Zhuzhou, Sika’s products have been widely used in metro rail vehicles in Guangzhou, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Wuhan and other cities. Owing to development of their

export projects, they have also been utilized in India, Malaysia, Turkey and many other countries.

In addition to highly competent technical and sales support during the project, the future post-sales service and Sika’s global sales network play a very important role. This is one of the major advantages of Sika which is considered and appreciated by customers when selecting suppliers. These factors will enable Sika to continue growing in the rail market, which is expected to gain in importance in the future as a result of the strong urbanization trend and population increases.
