Project DescriptionThe Palm Jumeirah is one of the most exciting residential projects on earth. A man-made island, it is being built off the shores of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. The Palm shaped development extends 6.5 kilometres into the Arabian Gulf and is surrounded by an eleven kilometre-long cre-scent shaped breakwater, built with over seven million tons of rock and sand. It adds 60 kilometres of beachfront to the coast of the UAE – which is all now being developed for private beach residen-ces and some thirty five star luxury hotels. Project Location: The Palm ‘Golden Mile’ is located along the cen-tre of the ‘trunk’ of The Palm, Jumeirah, and will include an inter-national shopping, commercial and residential development cover-ing some 60,000 square metres. The Palm Golden Mile will provide a broad mix of luxury apartments, townhouses and penthouses, all offering prime waterfront living. Project Dimension: Project Golden Mile 1 / 2 consists of two build-ings, each 1000m long and 60m wide. Each structure has three basements and eight floors above ground level (Residential + Hotel + Shopping facilities)

Marketing Strategy – How Sika won this important projectTo win this project Sika UAE had to win real battles! In the original project documents for the Golden Mile, the water-proofing had been specified as a competitor’s membrane system.Sika UAE approached the project together with the appointed main contractor who had a very good previous relationship with Sika. Due to this relationship, together with Sika’s improved technical and more cost effective proposals, the main contractor decided to submit Sika’s system to the project consultants as a preferable and more reliable alternative. A joint presentation was made to the en-gineering consultants, the Sika proposals were assessed and then subsequently approved. Because of the size of the project and in order to demonstrate our expertise in a professional way, Sika provided a specialist - Sikaplan application instructor - to train and support the local con-tractor on site for the first four weeks of the project. Training cour-ses were held on the correct QA/QC and Installation procedures for the responsible engineers from the consultants, the main contractor and the specialist contractor.

Sika UAE’s Current Position in the local MarketToday, approximately two years after the start of the Palm Jumeirah project, Sika has become the market leader in the UAE for basement waterproofing with PVC sheet membranes. There are now three fully trained specialist waterproofing contractors and twenty eight success-fully completed major reference projects, with approximately 500,000 m² of membrane applied on these projects in total.

The key success factor during these two years has been the higher Sika technical competence, when compared to the competition, the overall Sika reputation and excellent customer service, including maintaining the confidentiality of our customers in their project negotiations.
