Pick a sunny day and investigate what happens to objects’ shadows as the sun moves across the sky. You need to place a small object somewhere where the sun will shine on it for most of the day. Take pictures of its shadow every hour to see how it changes throughout the day. Can you write up exactly what happened in your experiment? Did the shadow get longer or shorter as the day went on? Does the size change at all? Does the shadow’s position change?

The life of Florence Nightingale

Dr Martin Luther King said he had a dream that life for his children could be different from how it had been for him. He didn’t believe in using violence to change things. Instead, he gave powerful speeches and led peaceful protests. He never gave up the fight for equal rights, and made a real difference.

Can you create your own dream cloud for the world you would like to live in?

Try looking at the human rights on the next page to help you with some ideas.

L ve comes in different colours

Read some of Martin Luther King’s wise words beside the heart.

Can you create a version of your own, with each colour representing a person who is important to you?

A special edition of the 500 Words competition for children, focusing on themes related to the Black Lives Matter movement, was announced on The Chris Evans Breakfast Show on Virgin Radio UK this week.

If you fancy a French challenge, listen to the full story read in French. It’s ten minutes long but even if you don’t understand all of it you may well under-

stand some of the words. Listen out for ‘les cheveux’ (hair) and ‘papillons’ (butterflies) Maybe you can figure out what is happening in the

story, the pictures may help you.

Synopsis en Francais:

Adé adore les éclairs au chocolat, les papillons et

poser des questions. Elle a aussi de magnifiques

cheveux mais ses camarades d'école s'en moquent,

simplement parce qu'ils sont différents.

Synopsis in English:

Adé loves chocolate éclairs, butterflies and ask-

ing questions. She also has magnificent hair that

some of her classmates make fun of, simply be-

cause it's so different to their own.

Comme un Million de Papillons Noirs; Like a Million Black Butterflies.

This is a French story about a little girl who, at first, is not happy with her hair be-cause of some unkind words from other children. With the help of her family she learns to love her hair and be proud of who she is. It is written by the French author Laura Nsafou and beautifully illustrated by Barbara Brun who is also French.
