Context of and Purpose for Writing

Students are asked to write responses to five questions over a specific film watched in class. One of these questions is to discuss why they liked or disliked the film. They are expected to write using three examples of the film and to justify their thoughts.

Content Development

Throughout the film critique, students are expected to use specific examples from the film and to discuss using learned film terminology when appropriate. Discussion of the filmmaker’s intent are also encouraged.

Genre and Disciplinary Conventions

Three of the five question will deal directly with the film industry standards of the Criteria of a Successful Film in the selected genre. Students are asked to justify with examples why the film did, or did not meet each of the criteria.

Sources and Evidence

Each of the five questions demands a response that is not a review (simply stating what happened in the film), but a critique instead. Examples in the film are used to justify the critique.

Control of Syntax and Mechanics

College appropriate spelling and grammar is expected for each of the papers.

Readability of Visual Elements

The structure of the paper is given to the students by pre-formatting the questions. Students simply type in their responses to each question. However, these responses are to be well thought out and justified. The entire assignment centers on watching a film, which is considered a visual medium. Students are required to study the visual aspects of a film (icon and metaphor) when creating the critique.

Relevance, Accuracy, and Integration of Visual Elements

Students are encouraged to state their own thoughts and judgments over the film and its visual elements. They are told that they are the experts of their opinions, as long as they justify their ideas and use concrete examples from the film and what they see.

Explanation of Issues

Students are asked to write responses to five questions over a specific film watched in class. Each written response must look at the film as a whole and if the artists working in the film were successful in communication the desired effect, based on the question being answered. At least three examples are expected for each response.

Evidence In writing each response to the five questions, the student is expected to analyze the film and determine through specific examples/evidence form the film to support their responses.

Influence of Context and Assumptions

Students are expected to learn early in the class the different roles and expectations that each artist working on a film must have in completing the film project. They are to appreciate the film artist’s effort, but are also expected to independently decide if the artists were successful in their task.

Student’s Position The entire critique over the film is based on a student position. From determining if they liked or disliked the film, to determining if the film met the industry standards, each student is expected to articulate and justify their position.

Conclusions and Related Outcomes

Again, each of the five responses are expected to clearly articulate and justify the student’s position by way of argument and example.

Cultural Diversity Students are asked to write responses to five questions over a specific film watched in class. One of these questions is to discuss “Do you believe that this film has lessons within the storyline that could positively influence society or mankind?” Responses are expected to have at least three examples from the film.

Knowledge of Cultural Worldview Frameworks

Each student is to why they believe the film did or did not have lessons that could influence society or mankind. Specific examples form the film are used to prompt this discussion. An understanding of different cultures would be essential for an appropriate response.

Empathy (Skills) To appropriately answer if the film has lessons for society or mankind, students would need to have an understanding of different cultures other than their own.

Openness (Attitudes)

Part of the discussion of a specific film’s lessons for society or mankind, would be the student’s need to look beyond their own culture and perceive world or society in a more holistic approach.

Global Self-Awareness

Again, the design of the question specifically addresses the film and the student’s understanding of culture and the world. It is used to prompt the discussion and understanding of Social Responsibility.

Page 18: Signature Assignmentstufiles.sanjac.edu/GeneralEducation/2018-2019... · Signature Assignment DRAM 2366 – Film Appreciation Individual Film Critique Course Assignment Title

Make sure that each question is over 100 words and has 3or more specific examples from the film. Depending onthe film assigned, there may be sequels andprequels. Make sure you only talk about the specific filmassigned, not other films.

Write the response in the blog. Do not add anattachment to the blog, only write in the blog. Otherstudents must see your work and may not have thedocument program like Word to read your work.

If you are going to cut and paste into the blog fromanother document that you have been working on,BlackBoard makes this a bit complicated. You cannot usethe cut and paste icons in the BlackBoard text box. youmust use the cut and paste commands from yourkeyboard. For example, for a Word document, highlightthe text in the Word document, select Control/C. This willcopy the text. Then go to the blog text box and clickwithin the blog. On your keyboard select Control/V. Thiswill paste the text into the blog.

3. Click on "Post Entry" when you are done

• Please keep in mind, this must be your own words and thoughts! All blogswill be checked against the Internet for plagiarism. Violators of plagiarismwill receive a zero for the Group Critique or will be asked to drop thecourse. Regardless of which, all violators will be reported to the Dean ofStudents for an investigation.

Step Three:

By now, the following has already been completed:

• A Group Leader has been selected.• All members of the Group have blogged their responses to the 5

questions/statements over the film. If some members of the Group havenot blogged their responses, do not worry about them at this time. TheGroup cannot wait on late members.

Now it is time to complete the third part of the Group Critique Assignment - Complete the Wiki Document - A Wiki document is a single document that allcan edit and work on. All Group members work on a single document (alreadycreated/started by your Instructor):

1. The Group Leader assigns each member of the Group to the Wikidocument. This must be done immediately! Do this no later than onehour after the Wiki opens to the students. To do this, each Group Leadershould:

o Click on “Groups for Group Critiques” and click on your group.o Scroll down the page to the bottom and click on the “Group Wiki”

link in the Group Tools.

Page 19: Signature Assignmentstufiles.sanjac.edu/GeneralEducation/2018-2019... · Signature Assignment DRAM 2366 – Film Appreciation Individual Film Critique Course Assignment Title

o Click on the “Edit Wiki Content” on the Wiki document that hasalready been created by your Instructor. Do not create a new WikiDocument.

o Look for the GREEN font and assign each member of the Group toone part of the assignment.

There are 6 members or less to a Group. Assign each ofthe five members of the Group to one of the five sectionsof the Wiki document. You (the 6th person), as GroupLeader, do not have a section to complete in the Wikidocument. You facilitate the Group, and make sure thedocument is completed.

Assign the sections in this order of importance: Sections#1, #2, #3. #4 and #5.

Each section of the Wiki must be assigned. Assign allmembers of your group even if some has not bloggedabout the Leader or blogged about the fivequestions/statements.

Leaders must write the members name in the green areaof the Wiki for each section in the blank after "Assignedto." Do not fill out the blank after the words "CompletedBy", this will be done by the Leader after all the sections ofthe Wiki is completed.

If there are not enough members of a Group to completeassigning to each section of the Wiki, the Leader mayassign a member of themselves to the other sections. TheInstructor will give extra credit for the member doingmultiple sections and/or the Leader for doing a section. Inone case, there were only two members in a Group. TheGroup Leader assigned three sections to the member andcompleted two sections themselves. Both members ofthe Group received 120 points on the assignment.

o Click Submit.o Post a Blog stating that the individual assignments have been

made.o Please note: If assigning Group members is not completed within

one hour of the Wiki be made available, the Instructor willcomplete the task and give the Group Leader a zero for the Wikisection of the Group Critique Assignment.

2. Group members open the Wiki document (see above directions to openthe Wiki document) and find your assigned section in the Group Critique.

3. Members of the Group will now update their section of the Wikidocument:

a. Go back to the Blog and read each member’s Blog that corresponds toyour section of the Wiki document.

For example, if you were assigned section Two of the Wikidocument, "What do you think of the film? Do you like itor dislike it and why?", then only read that section of theBlog from each of your Group members.

Page 20: Signature Assignmentstufiles.sanjac.edu/GeneralEducation/2018-2019... · Signature Assignment DRAM 2366 – Film Appreciation Individual Film Critique Course Assignment Title

You would ignore all other sections written in the Blog byeach of your Group Members, except the one section ofthe Wiki you are assigned.

b. Based on your and your Group member’s Blog responses to your section, draft a combined response to be placed in the Wiki document. Do not just postwhat you think the answer is for this part of the Wiki. You are speaking for theentire Group, not just yourself.

Make sure your response is over 100 words, uses correctspelling and grammar, and provides at least 3 specificexamples of the film (stated by the Group members). Ifyour response is under 100 words, you will get a zero forthe assignment.

c. Add your response to the Wiki document (respond in your section of theWiki document…only your section, not others).

i. Click on the “Group Wiki” link in the Group Tools.i. Click on the “Edit Wiki Content” on the Wiki document that has already

been created by your Instructor. Do not create a new Wiki Document.i. Cut and paste your response into the Wiki document in the section of your

responsibility. If you are going to cut and paste into the blog from anotherdocument that you have been working on, BlackBoard makes this a bitcomplicated. You cannot use the cut and paste icons in the BlackBoard text box.you must use the cut and paste commands from your keyboard. For example, fora Word document, highlight the text in the Word document, select Control/C. Thiswill copy the text. Then go to the blog text box and click within the blog. On yourkeyboard select Control/V. This will paste the text into the blog.

v. Click Submit.d. You can assist others with their section of the Wiki document (this is theonly assignment where collaboration is allowed).

4. Group Leadero If two hours before the Wiki is due and members have not

updated their section of the Wiki, reassign their section to anothermember of the Group, or to yourself. The Instructor will give extracredit for the person filling in the extra section.

o After all Group members have updated the Wiki document, GroupLeaders will update the Wiki document by changing the section inGREEN about who completed each section. Add the membersname to the blank after the words "Completed by." If youreassigned a section, the GREEN area will have the name of themember originally assigned the section under "Assigned to" andthe new member that completed the section under "Completedby."

This concludes the Group work portion of the assignment. Only the individual work on the Prompt Questions remains.

Step Four:

Page 21: Signature Assignmentstufiles.sanjac.edu/GeneralEducation/2018-2019... · Signature Assignment DRAM 2366 – Film Appreciation Individual Film Critique Course Assignment Title

After the Wiki document has been completed by the deadline, submit your response to the Prompt Questions. Note: the Prompt questions will not appear until after the deadline to complete the Wiki document.

To answer the Prompt Questions, wait until after the deadline for the completion of the Wiki document and then click on the title above, Complete the Forth and Final Part of the Group Film Critique Assignment, and follow the directions from there. When answering the questions (examples of the questions are listed below), remember that communicating and working with your team is not defined by meeting face-to-face or by way of talking to them.
