Minutes of the AGM 2014… Will shortly be available on line, courtesy of our Past President, John Westlake. The highlights of the AGM for most of us were: (1) the excellent presentation of Ted Davie on the new Battle of the Atlantic Place on the Halifax waterfront, incorporating the RCN memorial, HMCS Sackville. See the excellent article by George Borgal in Frontline-Defence: http://www.frontline-defence.com/Defence/index_archives.php?page=2196 ; and (2) the discussion of when and where the next Venture Reunion might take place. The decision was left to the incoming Executive (listed on p. 7 below), and our new President, Ed Vishek, Class of ’61, has already indicated that the consensus seems to be for Victoria in 2019, and that the Reunion Committee, under the chairmanship of Wilf Lund, Class of ’61 and Venture Historian, will meet shortly. The distinguished Treasurer for the 2014 Reunion, Dick Duffield, Class of ’65, has, most importantly, provided (below) the statement of financial position as of 31 October 2014, indicating that we came away with a small surplus, which will go toward Association general revenues.

Letters to the Editor

From Squamish Dear Editor, After 27 years in our care, "Canadian Sunset" has a new owner/skipper.  We have thoroughly enjoyed our 25 years of cruising about the world. We saw many exotic places, met many fine people and made some good friends. Even the maintenance in strange anchorages was not so bad in hindsight. After 78,546 nm and 90 nations,we will miss the camaraderie of the cruising fraternity. Whenever in Squamish,bc ,give us a call 604 567 3671  .Fair winds and following sea's.   ...cheers     Jim Gracie Class of ‘60

Arctic Star Medal - Rear-Admiral Robert Phillip Welland DSC&Bar, RCN by Wilf Lund, Class of ’61,

Venture Historian and Custodian Emeritus, Welland Room, NOTC Venture

In May, 2014, I submitted the following to Naval Headquarters; this request was subsequently approved and an image of the Arctic Star appears below.

In 1945, then Lieutenant-Commander Robert Welland was in command of HMCS Haida as part of an escort for Convoy JW 66 from Britain to Murmansk, Russia, returning with Convoy RA 66. He should qualify for the Arctic Star Medal. Welland retired from the RCN with the rank of Rear-Admiral and is now deceased. During his naval service he was the founding Commanding Officer of HMCS Venture, the naval establishment for training officers in the Esquimalt Dockyard. It is now called NOTC Venture. In 2009 Admiral Welland presented his sword and medals to NOTC Venture for permanent display in the Welland Room, set up to commemorate HMCS Venture. The Commanding Officer NOTC Venture, Cdr Jason Boyd, is the authority responsible for the medals. The medal has been taken on charge and displayed with Welland’s other medals (see below).

Our NEW President’s

Report Here it is November. The Ottawa Reunion is behind us and some of us are perhaps already thinking of the next reunion. If you remember, the AGM left the decision of whether and when to have another reunion in the hands of the new Executive. The new Executive has decided that there will be another reunion, in Victoria, in three to five years — final dates to be determined. The Head of the Reunion Committee, Wilf Lund, has left to winter in Arizona, and when he comes back will be searching for local Venturians to volunteer to work toward the next reunion.

I must congratulate the Ottawa Reunion Committee for a successful and enjoyable event. I know you were not planning on nine degree weather, but you could have warned us West Coasters that you can freeze your butt off in Ottawa in September. It was great to see and re-meet people you have not seen in years. I promise that the name tags at the next reunion will be “Normal” LARGE print for those of you who don’t see as well as we used to. It’s embarrassing to have to bend down in order to read someone’s name because you can’t recognize or remember who you’re talking to.

There is lots of time to plan events and we are looking for activities for the Victoria reunion. Some suggestions are already in play: e.g., a tour of the new helicopter hangar at Pat Bay, and a look at the Sea King replacement, and a nostalgia cruise in Oriole and on the YFP replacement, the Orca class training vessel.

The class of ’61 is planning a mini-reunion get-together on 17 December 2014 to honor the 17 members of our calss who are no longer with us. That will be held at the Welland Room at the Admiral Sir Charles E. Kingsmill building at Work Point. For those who have never visited the Welland Room, there is a wealth of Naval and Venture artifacts to take you back to your younger days. Members of other classes are welcome. I ask that all classes let the Editor of the Signal and the webmaster of www.hmcsventure.com know when mini-reunions are scheduled. Please invite other Venturians in your area to attend.

Keep trying to maintain contact with as many ex-Ventures as you can. We are getting fewer as time goes by. I was visiting my son in Powell River and learned that one of my class mates had settled there. That trip was short and busy so I did not have time to get in touch with him. That was okay: I’d do it on my “next visit”. But on my next visit, I learned that he had died. I have regretted ever since not making the effort to seek him out and renew our friendship. So keep in touch with classmates, friends, family, etc. We are all of that age.

Yours aye Ed Vishek, Class of ‘61 President

The Editor’s Corner

Almost December already, so I am behind my self-imposed deadlines, but the Signal is timeless and I wanted to make sure I had all the material from the Reunion before going to press. Our gathering in Ottawa was a great opportunity, not only to catch up with old friends but also to reflect on where the Venture Association is heading in coming years. I was shocked to hear a fellow member, somewhat younger than I, suggesting that there should be a shorter gap between this and the next Reunion because “we might not be around in five years”. I had to reply “speak for yourself!” The highlight of the meeting for me was the great presentation by Ted Davie on the new Maritime Centre in Halifax, to which members and their friends are encouraged to contribute generously (see p. 2). BZ to all the organizers and to all those who made the effort to attend, some from a very great distance. As I mentioned at the Reunion AGM, this newsletter is yours, and its continued existence depends on your input. Please keep in touch with Letters to the Editor, excerpts from your memoirs, photos, jokes, etc., in either Canadian language. I look forward to seeing all the survivors in Victoria in five years time. Aye, Gordon Longmuir, Class of ‘57 Y’r Editor

Naughtical Terms*WAY -fr AS weg and ON vegr cog. with wain and L via - way meaning to transport. To give way and to have one's

way referred to the right of way on a high road or to give way sailing "Rules of the Road". Ships got under way and oarsmen "gave way together" and ceased their effort at "way enough". Ships still make way through the water as they did before. The modern English reference to roads as "ways" is a result of literal translation of names such as Via Appia to Appian Way and thence the naming of local roads as the Queensway, etc., and of course the generic highway, motorway and even waterway,. The maritime 'way' has lasted with little alteration in meaning. Not only is it reflected in the term “under way” but in GANGWAY as well. Although much fun is made of ships weighing anchor, this "weigh" is a mistaken spelling of "way" that has survived, probably as a result of refractory error. It is preserved perhaps as a result of its usefulness in the ship's log which could record the term "anchor aweigh" which could not be confused with "under way" which is however, what one was, when the anchor was broken out of the sea bottom.

Support Your Naval Heritage NAC Endowment Fund

Year Ended March 31, 2014 – Outstanding Results!

Dear NAC Member

This past year, your Endowment Fund gave out $24,000 in grants of which the two largest were for support to the veterans’ care facility in Victoria, Broadmead ($6,000) and Sea Cadet Scholarships ($5,000). Based on feedback from our members, we will be increasing support for the Sea Cadet scholarships to $7,000 this year part of total grants of $26,000 for projects sponsored by of our Branches.

For your ready information, your Endowment Fund has granted $100,000 to 19 projects across Canada over the past 5 years and aggregate investments are now approximately $700,000, double the balance of 5 years ago. 300 Donors, a record number, gave $62,000 this past year led by Ottawa Branch which doubled their previous year’s aggregate contribution. The largest donation was from the Estate Fred Crickard who bequeathed $20,000 in his will to the Endowment Fund. If half of all members gave at least $100 annually, we could reach $1,000,000 in 4 years time which would allow annual grants of $50,000. Please help achieve our goal and give generously to the NAC Endowment Fund – all donations are eligible for Income Tax receipts.

Please note that that the Canada Revenue Agency has recently approved our change of name and all cheques should now be made out payable to the NAC Endowment Fund. Please donate now by filling out and mailing in the attached form

On behalf of your Trustees:

Brooke Campbell Larry Fournier, Reg Kowalchuk, Doug Plumsteel, Peter Chapman

Ps. Please consider leaving a legacy to the NAC Endowment Fund as a beneficiary in your will.

Please join in supporting your Naval Association of Canada Endowment Fund

In the past 10 years, your donations have doubled the size of your Endowment Fund which now stands at close to $700,000. This past year $24,000 was granted to various projects including five Sea Cadet scholarships across Canada each of $1,000.

Please complete the following donation form and mail it to:

Naval Association of Canada - Endowment Fund PO Box 2402, Vancouver Main Postal Outlet 349 West Georgia St., Vancouver, B.C. V6B 3W7

Or you may donate online by credit card at www.canadahelps.org then type ‘naval association of canada’ into the Search Box. CanadaHelps.org will issue the charitable tax receipt for your donation for which a small credit card service fee will be charged.

Your continued support is appreciated. Brooke Campbell, Chairman, NAC Endowment Fund
