Orgaizatioal Overview
Our Value Deliver ModelThe strategy is to strengthen the model and increase our value
proposition. You can almost see these as business units.
When we think about these leaders, we think about bringing
together the top leaders o today and tomorrow. Those leaders
include student leaders, industry leaders and academic leaders.
Our approach to bringing these three groups together is to ocus
them around:
Community Programs: SIFE teams develop educational outreach
projects in their community to improve the quality o lie and
standard o living or people in need. SIFE teams projects
address a variety o topics. Rather than mandating a uniorm set
o projects, teams are encouraged to work within the ramework
o this criterion while adapting their approach to the diverse
needs o people in dierent communities. The result is a program
that is global in scope and purpose with the lexibility and
responsiveness o a community-based organization.
Career Connections Overview: SIFE teams work with the
corporate world and have networking opportunites at career airs,
through Business Advisory Boards, and other
appropriate resources.
Leadership Connections Overview: SIFE teams, academic
institutional representatives, and corporate sponsors network
together through a variety o opportunities such as Business
Advisory Boards, Top-to-Future Top Forums, SIFE competitions
and events, and virtually.
The culmination o the SIFE program is an annual series o
competitions that provides a orum or teams to present the
results o their projects, which are evaluated by business leaders
serving as judges. Teams compete irst at the regional and
national levels, then at the international level when the national
champion teams rom each country meet at the SIFE World Cup.
The connections made possible through the SIFE network
are beneiting individuals and communities around the world
while ostering an environment or personal and proessional
development among the participants. In addition to the
community aspect o the program, SIFEs leadership and career
initiatives are designed to create meaningul opportunities or

Orgaizatioal Overview
The Individual SIFE TeamSIFE teams are organized on individual university campuses.
There are intentionally very ew rules or procedures established
by SIFE World Headquarters or how these teams should
be organized and structured. Rules can be ound in the
Membership Guidelines section. Questions a SIFE team may have
that are not addressed in that section are all let to the discretion
o the individual SIFE team to answer, with the help o their
Country Leader or Program Manager.
There are many ways to organize and operate a SIFE team. Each
college or university is as unique as the community it serves.
This lexibility allows each institution to structure its SIFE team
in a manner that best its its aculty, student and community
needs. Each SIFE team has complete reedom to adopt rules andprocedures to govern its own activities, beyond those outlined
in this handbook, as long as they are consistent with the SIFE
Membership Guidelines.
This same lexibility applies to each teams educational eorts.
The only parameters SIFE World Headquarters places on a teams
educational outreach programs is that they should be designed
considering the relevant economic, social and environmental
actors, which SIFE team most eectively empowered people
in need by applying business and economic concepts and an
entrepreneurial approach to improve their quality o lie and
standard o living. Beyond this, questions as to how many
projects teams choose to carry out, which audiences they target,
whether they design original educational material or use pre-
designed material, etc., are all let to the discretion o each team.
A set o Best Practices and suggestions or building a quality
and sustainable SIFE team can be ound in this handbook. The
SIFE program sta in each country is also available to meet teams
individually and can provide personal consultation to teams as
they organize and develop their educational outreach projects.
SIFE is an international non-proit organization that works with
leaders in business and higher education to mobilize university
students to make a dierence in their communities while
developing the skills to become socially responsible business
leaders. Participating students orm teams on their campus and
apply business concepts to develop outreach projects that improve
the quality o lie and standard o living or people in need. An
annual series o regional and national competitions provides
leaders serving as judges. National champion teams advance to
the prestigious SIFE World Cup. In addition to the community
ocus o the program, SIFEs leadership and career initiatives
create meaningul opportunities or learning and exchange among
the participants as well as the placement o students and alumni
with companies in search o emerging talent.

Soliciting Network Memberships
from InstitutionsMuch o SIFEs growth in membership within colleges and
universities is directly attributed to the work o members oveteran SIFE teams in recruiting and then mentoring teams at new
institutions. SIFE World Headquarters thanks these teams and
challenges all members o the network to continue to identiy and
help recruit potential new members. As SIFE teams serve in this
capacity within their home countries, they should be aware o the
ollowing guidelines:
1. Teams are encouraged to coordinate their activities with the
sta o their national SIFE organization.
2. Teams are not authorized to actually extend membership to
any other institution. Prospective colleges and universities
must register/apply with their countrys national SIFE
organization, which based on that countrys speciic eligibility
rules, will then make a decision as to whether or not to
accept that application.
When attempting to discuss membership opportunities or assist
with the organization o a SIFE team at institutions outside its home
country, a SIFE team must irst receive approval to do so rom the
sta o that countrys SIFE national organization.
Unortunately, or many legal reasons, we cannot extend membership
in the SIFE network to institutions in countries that do not currently
have a national SIFE organization in place. It is perectly appropriate
or SIFE teams to conduct educational outreach projects in such
countries and to collaborate with college/university students rom
that country. However, as described under the previous Trademark
Section, they are not authorized to represent themselves as
members o the network or use the SIFE trademark.
Furthermore, i partnering with another college/university, they may
not in any manner promote SIFE network membership opportunities,
distribute oicial SIFE material or initiate organizational activities atthe institution. Any SIFE aculty advisor or student team member who
believes they have identiied prospective network member institutions
in such a country should contact the SIFE World Headquarters
International Department at [email protected].

SIFE Competition
Understanding the Judging ProcessSIFE believes that the more knowledge teams have o their
assessment process, the better-prepared and successul they can
be. In an eort to provide insight on this, the ollowing illustrates
an outline o SIFEs judging process at all competitions:
1. Judges are taken through an in-depth orientation process,
during which they are introduced to SIFEs overall program
and trained on how to best evaluate the competing teams
in-line with the judging criterion. The judge orientation video
used as part o this process can be viewed at www.sie.org.
Please contact your Country Leader or Program Manager
or its location on the SIFE website. Faculty Advisors are
welcome to attend the judge orientation session as observers.
2. Each judge agrees to the Judges Oath, committing to
providing air and quality assessments o the teams overall
programs (see page 30 or a copy o the Judges Oath).
3. During each presentation, judges will assess the quality and
sustainability o the SIFE teams initiatives and its impact
in relation to the SIFE criterion, using the Individual Team
Evaluation (ITE) Form to take notes and select assessment
ratings. The ITE orm is used as the key assessment tool
during presentations and also serves as the primary orm o
eedback to teams on their perormance (see page 31-32 or
a sample o the ITE Form).
4. Judges use the Cumulative Evaluation Form (CEF) to actually
assess teams which then serve as the guide and key deciding
actor in making their inal decisions on rankings (see page
33 or a sample o the CEF).
5. One or more veteran judges serve as the League Coordinator
and acilitate the competition process in the room, ensuring
that the team presentations begin on time and that all judges
are on-track and present or all the presentations (in order or
their votes to count during the scoring process).
6. At the conclusion o the last presentation, judges then cast
their votes based on their rankings on the Cumulative EvaluationForm or competing teams. Individual votes per team and per
placement are then counted and mathematically tabulated to
arrive at the winning teams. This tabulation process is annually
audited and monitored by KPMG.
Level of ImpactJudges use the Level o Impact descriptions (listed below) as a
tool in making better assessment o the teams programs through
the ITE Form. Please note that the Level o Impact selection is
not mandated by SIFE nor is it part o the criterion. It is simply
a resource and guide. Though we expect judges to evaluate
teams based on the options selected rom the assessment o the
Individual Team Evaluation Form, do note that their inal ranking
is ultimately their decision to make.
Insufficient (equivalent to low impact): Project(s) activities
satisactorily completed, but had little eect on changing or
improving lives
Good (equivalent to medium impact): Project(s) gave criterion/
issue public attention, gained support and participation o key
stakeholders; endorsements/testimonials set orth
Ver Good (equivalent to high impact): Project(s) advocated
the passage o signiicant, sustainable change in target
audience, attention/support around project clearly advanced, key
stakeholders strongly inluenced
Excellent (equivalent to exceptional impact): Project(s) clearly
provided evidence o systematic/habitual, long-term change that
has signiicantly improved lives o target audience members, has
proven sustainable or multiple years, and has urther solidiied
commitments rom key stakeholders
Note: Each level is contingent upon meeting requirements
described in prior level

Reporting ProjectsThe ollowing are simple guidelines to be used when evaluating
the impact o educational outreach projects. I a team develops a
lesson plan or young children and presents it to eight classes,
they have not completed eight projects. They have presented one
project eight times.
Example or counting hours o involvement: John and Maria each
worked ten hours on Project X (a total o 20 hours o student
involvement). Tom worked eight hours and Jane worked six hours
on the same project (a total o 14 hours o student involvement).
Total hours o student involvement on Project X is 34 hours. This
team would report a total o 4 students involved and 34 hours ostudent involvement or Project X.
SIFE encourages all teams to be clear in explaining
the teams role in each activity in the annual report
and presentation.
Media VisibilitThe ollowing language should be used by SIFE teams to
report media visibility:
Reach
For broadcast media, reach is the estimated number o
unduplicated or dierent households or persons who viewed a
speciic station at least once or ive minutes during the average
week or the reported period o time. For print media, this is
number o people who read the publication.
Frequec
The average number o times the unduplicated viewers (or
readers) will be exposed to the schedule o spots.
Gross Impressions
The average number o persons who view (or read) at the
time the spot is run, multiplied by the number o times
the spot or program is run.
(Reach x Frequency = Gross Impressions)
Student and Team Registration
RequirementAny student who attends a SIFE competition at any level must
be a registered student through the online registration processavailable at www.SIFE.org or through the Active Team Sheet (the
latter is or all teams outside o the USA). Please also note that
some countries have an application and registration process or
their competitive events. It is the teams responsibility to contact
their Country Leader or Program Manager or clariication on this
additional process i it is applicable in the country.
Room Set-Up and EquipmentSIFE will provide the ollowing equipment in each presentation room
1. One eight-oot or larger screen
2. One extension cord
SIFE is not required to provide other equipment o any kind, such
ascomputers,slideprojectors,monitors,TVs,DVDplayers,carts,
tables, etc. It is the sole responsibility o each team to secure the
use o any other equipment.
In the event that the SIFE organization provides equipment (e.g.
projector, laptop, sound ampliier, etc.) or teams to use during their
presentations, the use o such equipment is strictly optional. Should
there be any technical issues/ailures, the SIFE organization will not
be responsible or its eect on the presentation, competition outcome
or any costs that may be incurred as a result o damaged equipment.
The SIFE team bears ull responsibility and is thereore encouraged to
provide and use its own equipment.
Details about the speciic room set-up, plus any event-speciic
guidelines or restrictions related to your countrys regional/nationa
competition as well as the SIFE World Cup will be provided in

The SIFE Team
There are ew rules governing individual SIFE team activities.
This lexibility allows each team to structure itsel and design
educational outreach programs that best it the needs o its
members, its institutions aculty and administrators, and the
community it serves. Individual SIFE teams have completediscretion to adopt policies or procedures or their own
operation beyond those outlined in the SIFE Team Handbook.
This reedom oten leads team members to ask, What is the best
way to operate our SIFE team? There are many correct answers
to that question. Teams have been successul using a variety o
models. This handbook is an attempt to assemble a set o best
practices or strategies or developing SIFE on your campus. Please
note that the program ideas provided in this manual represents only
suggestions, not rules. Every SIFE team is welcome to incorporate
as many or as ew o these recommendations as they choose.
The ollowing sections have been divided into our separate
areas, representing the signiicant activities required to create an
excellent SIFE team:
1. Developing a Mission Statement, Goals and Objectives
2. Educational Outreach Projects
3. Building a Sustainable Program
4. Preparing or Competition
The ollowing page provides a visual representation o these
activities. We suggest customizing this document to relect your
teams organizational details and distributing a copy to each o
your members.
Competition Judging Criterion ExplanationJust as the SIFE organization has continuously evolved over
the past 35 years, so has the competition judging criteria. This
most recent change, as was the case with past revisions to the
criteria, is not intended to be a radical departure rom the present
or cause teams to completely start over. Although noticeably
dierent in orm, we believe that substantively this criterion
provides teams the opportunity to build upon their past successes
while enhancing the relevance and impact to their uture projects.
The most signiicant dierence in the new criterion is the shit
rom a ocus on speciic topics to a more broad-based ocus on
approach, i.e., applying business and economic concepts and an
entrepreneurial approach along with a much greater emphasis on
outcome. i.e., improve the quality o lie and standard o living.
This shit does not mean that the current topics o projects done to
ulill them are no longer applicable or wont necessarily it with the
new criterion.
The revised criterion is simply more case-oriented. It shits the
emphasis rom individual subject matter to purpose, more clearly
deining a unique space or SIFE and accentuating our core belie
that business can be used to make the world a better place. This
provides a clear mandate or teams while actually enhancing our
programmatic approach o providing them the creative reedom
and lexibility to determine how best to achieve that mandate
and what speciic subjects to address under the umbrella o a
common purpose based on the interests o their students, theacademic objectives o their university and the unique needs o thei
community. It also encourages teams to continually ocus on not jus
what topic theyre addressing but what outcome theyre achieving
challenging them to continually increase the quality and impact
o their projects.
The new criterion also balances outcomes with the importance o
the method, i.e., empowering people in need. Again, building
on the long-standing belie within SIFE that the best way to
help people in the long run is to equip them with knowledge and
skills to help themselves.
Finally, and perhaps the newest idea relected in the criterion,
is the recognition that or solutions to be truly sustainable
they must make sense economically and socially as well as
environmentally. Teams will be asked to consider all three
elements and, whenever possible, to take an integrated approach
to addressing them through their projects.

SIFE Team Index Scale Descriptions
Team AssessmentAt the conclusion o each SIFE program year, the national SIFE
organizations conduct a ull assessment and evaluation o theSIFE teams within their respective countries. The assessment
tool used to evaluate each team is the SIFE Team Index. This
tool mainly awards points to teams based on the depth o the
quality o their educational programs, their success within
the SIFE program, as well as several long-term sustainability
elements. Over the years, the SIFE Team Index has become
a key tool in helping SIFE sta assess the strengths and
weaknesses o the teams and in response, build strategies to
ensure their growth and success. Though SIFE Headquarters
may use the individual team index scores to determine national
and worldwide scores, the primary objective o this tool is to
evaluate in-country perormance o teams based on which
appropriate measures will be taken to improve quality and
sustainability, thereby aecting the score positively. A sample
o the SIFE Team Index Scale Descriptions is available below
and on the ollowing page or reerence.
SIFE Team Index Scale DescriptionsEach point value listed below is awarded based on having met
the actor or not met the actor. In other words, teams either
receive the entire point or receive no score there are no partial
points given. All conditions or each item must be ully met or
the team to receive the corresponding point. Please remember
that though SIFE Headquarters may use the individual Team
Index Scores to determine national and worldwide sources,
the primary objective o this tool is to evaluate in-country
perormance o teams based on which appropriate measures will
be taken to improve their quality and sustainability.
