Stage III and the Department of Creative Arts are hard at work putting together a little-known farce recently discovered in the Czech Republic National Library Archives.

“It’s really thrilling!” explains Professor Tina Poehler, who is the J. Cleese Endowed Chair at Chaplin University, in Keystone Ohio. “With the discovery of this play, we may need to rewrite the textbooks on theatre history. Ms. Dušana’s script is fresh — almost like it was written yesterday!”

Poehler, an authority on slapstick and satirical walks, uncovered the WWII era play while researching at the National Library in Prague. “It was just stuck in there between George Cruikshank’s Punch and Judy and an opera by Harrison Birtwistle. Clearly a horrendous misfile, but lucky for us!”

The play is set during WWII when the Louvre was evacuated out of fears that French national treasures would be plundered by the invading German army.

David Lane, the play’s director explains: “The play brings to light the massive theft of art during that time as Hitler was hell-bent on building his Führermuseum in his hometown of Linz. It was to be a monument to Germanic ideals and Leonardo’s Mona Lisa was at the top of his list. The French knew it, so they evacuated her in an ambulance and moved her from chateaux to chateaux over the course of the war. What’s surprising is just how hilarious Ms. Dušana’s play is, given the subject matter.”

“The play picks up with the painting in the possession of two bumbling servants who do all they can to hide Leonardo’s painting from Nazi spies and almost destroy the beloved artwork in the process.”

“Ms. Dušana’s play is like stepping back in time into the era of Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd, and Edna Purviance. It’s rumored that Ms. Dušana was in the room when Chaplin famously discovered his Tramp character . . . Apparently they argued for hours over the baggy pants — Chaplin wanted something more slimming — thank goodness baggy won the day, or we might not have had the Tramp we know today.”

The Painting, premieres April 7th at 8pm in the Beaudoin Theater and runs through the 16th of April. For information and tickets, call 518-783-2527

When was the last time you attended a film festival, let alone a festival designed with the purpose of promoting invisible film? Better yet, have you ever heard of invisible film? Dr. Mahmood Karimi-Hakak, Professor of Creative Arts at Siena College, would like to extend to the Siena community an invitation to Festival Cinema Invisible, held April 1st, 2nd and 3rd at Proctor’s GE Theatre in Schenectady, New York.

Festival Cinema Invisible (FCI) is an exhibition of film that has not been properly screened, or has not been screened at all, in its country of origin or abroad. This could be due to anything from funding issues to political issues that discourage or prevent artists from pursuing the arts in their homelands. Many of the films are from Iran and surrounding Middle Eastern countries, and cover diverse topics with the themes of freedom and humanity at their core.

Professor Karimi-Hakak is FCI’s founder and president and was inspired to start FCI five years ago when discussing his collection of unscreened films made by his Iranian former students. It was suggested that the films could be screened in Montreal, a city known for its festivals and possessing a large Iranian community. Today, FCI is in the process of moving away from its focus of supporting solely Iranian filmmakers towards supporting filmmakers from all over the Middle East.

FCI is a not-for-profit event and provides a rare opportunity to see films to which the general public does not have access. These directors have put their lives on the line (in some cases, quite literally) to share aspects of their culture and their human experience, from their happiest moments to their struggle for expression. All that they lack is an audience.

Siena graduate Jarrel Harris ’14 has found success and now works as an Associate Producer at Sports Illustrated. His main focus is on the NBA and he has published several articles which can be found on the Sports Illustrated website. Jarrel has also done some freelance work for Complex Media and contributed to online content at Dime Magazine.

Surprisingly, writing has not always come easy to Jarrel. During his early years at Siena, Jarrel sometimes struggled academically. He improved tremendously throughout the years and his passion for journalism led him to where he is today.

Congrats Jarrel! We are so proud of your accomplishments.

Other popular activities inlcude traditional rope making, 18th century candle dipping, calligraphy writing with quill pens and bottled ink, and trying on traditional clothing.

Everyone, including those outside the Siena community, is invited to attend this event. POSC 450 is a travel course that is following the presidential candidates and campaigning. The students spent a week in New Hampshire to experience the 2016 New Hampshire Primary. During their week there, 16 students were able to volunteer for campaigns and attend political rallies. The class caught the attention of The Daily Gazette and The New Hampshire Union Leader which featured articles about their trip. Some of our the students were even interviewed! These students had a blast learning about presidential politics. . . and taking some selfies with the candidates wasn’t so bad either.

Social Work

School of Liberal Arts Spring 2016

On October 21, Professor Carla Sofka presented a webinar for the Association for Death Education and Counseling entitled “Using Digital and Social Media in your Work with the Dying and Bereaved”. The webinar described how online resources and digital/social media are being used in the provision of social and informational support during times of illness and coping with loss, for memorialization of the dead, and for survivor advocacy. The information is based on the research that Dr. Sofka has been conducting over the past few years.

Assistant Professor Dirk de Jong co-taught the interdisciplinary International Studies course this fall and accompanied 26 students on a trip to Montreal. The class attended a 2-day conference on “Sustainability, Biodiversity, and Social Action” at Concordia University, where several of the students (selected by their peers) made presentations. The conference provides an annual exchange between students from Siena and Concordia. Professor de Jong also had two articles accepted for publication.

Professor McIntosh was awarded a Legislative Advocacy Leadership Award by the board of directors of the NYS Social Work Education Association in recognition of her years organizing the annual legislative action day for the Association as well as her advocacy work in many other arenas. Professor McIntosh has recently resigned from the board of the Association after serving for more than 15 years.
