    Insulated gatebipolar transistor(IGBT)

A three-terminal power semiconductor device, noted for high efficiency and fast switching.

IRIG timecodes Family of standardized timecodes used by theU.S. Government and the private industry forthe correlation of data and time.

IT system Power supply system that does not provide adirect connection between live conductors andearthed parts; exposed conductive parts areearthed.

    J

    K

Kaizen A Japanese philosophy that focuses oncontinuous improvement throughout allaspects of life, which was first implemented inseveral Japanese businesses as a managementstrategy after World War II, adopted tobusinesses throughout the world also asContinuous Improvement Process (CIP).

Konnex (KNX) Standardized bus system for home and building

applications according to EN 50090 and ISO/IEC14543, comprising switching, signaling, controlling, monitoring, and indicatingfunctions in the electrical installation.

    L

LCAS Link Capacity Adjustment Scheme or LCAS is amethod to dynamically increase or decrease thebandwidth of virtual concatenated containersto effectively transfer asynchronous datastreams over > SDH.

    Live tank circuit-breaker

A > circuit-breaker with interrupters in a tankinsulated from earth.

Low voltage (LV) Set of voltage levels used for the distribution ofenergy up to 1,000 V AC, or 1,200 V DC.

    L-tripping Overload protection.

    M

    Miniature circuit-breaker (MCB)

Automatically-operated low-voltage switchingdevice designed to protect an electrical circuitfrom overload or short-circuit. Also used tomanually connect or disconnect an electriccircuit at will. Rated current not more than125 A.

    Molded-case circuit-breaker (MCCB)

A circuit-breaker having a supporting housingof molded insulating material forming anintegral part of the circuit-breaker.

    Medium voltage(MV)

Set of voltage levels lying between > lowvoltage (LV) and > high voltage (HV). The

boundaries between HV and LV depend on localcircumstances and history or common usage. The band 1kV to 52 kV is commonly accepted inEurope. The term medium voltage is nor usedin the U.K. nor in Australia.

    Metall oxide varistor(MOV)

A discrete electronic component that iscommonly used to divert excessive current tothe ground and/or neutral lines.

    N

    Neutral conductor(N)

A conductor connected to the neutral point of asystem, which is suitable for transmittingelectrical energy.

    N-tripping Neutral conductor protection.

    O

OASIS System for reserving transmission capacities inthe US power transmission networks.

ODBC Standard database access method for usingdatabase management systems.

OLE Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) isa technology that allows embedding andlinking to documents and other objectsdeveloped by Microsoft.

OPC A set of connectivity standards for industrialautomation from the OPC Foundation, whichoffers interoperability between gauges, databases, programmable logic controllers(PLCs), distributed control systems (DCSs) andremote terminal units (RTUs).

    Operating voltage(in a system)

The value of the voltage under normalconditions, at a given instant and a given pointof the system.

OPEX On-going cost for running a product, business,or system.

OSCOP P A PC program for retrieving and processing ofrecords made with the SIMEAS R digital faultand power quality recorder, the SIMEAS Qpower quality recorder, or with numericalprotection relays using the IEC 60870-5-103protocol.

OSI A layered, abstract description forcommunications and computer networkprotocol design.

Outgoing feeder A feeder bay in a substation which is normallyused to transmit power to the system.

Overcurrent Any current in an electr ic circuit that exceedsthe > rated current.

Overload Operating conditions in an electrically sound,

fault-free electric circuit that give rise to an >overcurrent.

    P

PABX A telephone exchange that serves a particularbusiness or office, as opposed to one that acommon carrier or telephone companyoperates for many businesses or for the generalpublic.

    Pulse-codemodulation (PCM)

A digital representation of an analog signalwhere the magnitude of the signal is sampledregularly at uniform intervals, then quantizedto a series of symbols in a numeric (usuallybinary) code.

    PDH An international multiplexing standard.

PE conductor Conductor provided for purposes of safety, forexample protection against electric shock. In anelectrical installation, the conductor identifiedPE is normally also considered as protectiveearthing conductor.

    Phase-shiftingtransformer

A device for controlling the power flow throughspecific lines in a complex power transmissionnetwork.

    (Photovoltaik) PeakWatt

Maximum rated output of a photovoltaic cell, module, or system. Typical rating conditionsare 1000 W/m2 of sunlight, 20 oC ambient airtemperature and 1 m/s wind speed.
