The remaining forests on Siberut Island form part of this endangered world heritage. Among the 33 mammal species on the island, 14 are endemic (42%). Looking for alternative economic activities for the farmers living in the last remaining wildland areas is a way of fighting against deforestation and also against poverty. > Project description Duration: 3 years, March 2007 - March 2010 The SCP is taking action on several fronts: Research and study project on genetics and conservation biology (taxonomy and phylogeny), ethology, the feeding and socio-ecology of primates endemic to the Mentawai islands: the Sibertu macaque, the Mentawi snub-nosed langur, the Mentawai leaf monkey and the Kloss gibbon, Conservation of the forest including activities carried out in conjunction with the villagers with a view to sustainable development. > Partner Organisations The German Primatology Centre (DPZ), The Bogor University of Agriculture (IPB), Indonesia, the Louis Pasteur University, Strasbourg, the Paris-Grignon National Agronomic Institute, Planète Urgence, UNESCO and Conservation International (CI), the Indonesian Government. © Act for Nature 049.CA0705.07 / 049.1.CA0806.09
