More than a museum, its five traditional teak houses on stilts were painstakinglyassembled under his supervision, a process that took over 20 years. Each isinter-connected and crammed full of fine-art treasures, not museum pieces buthis collection, like ceramics, precious furniture and Buddha images. There is alsoan interesting library, the stacks of books ranging from fiction to philosophyproof of his diverse interests, and a Thai-style pavilion used for public functions. The serene gardens are full of exotic plants, trees and flowers but most notablefor their bonsai-style trees, called 'mai dat' in Thai.

This remarkable Thai-style wooden house once belonged to the late Mr. JimThompson, an American silk entrepreneur. The house, now a museum, displaysMr. Thompson's splendid collection of Asian artefacts and antiques. The lovely garden-enclosed compound sitting on the bank of the Saen SaebCanal would have gone completely unnoticed, had it not been for a legacy leftbehind by a middle-aged American man named Jim Thompson. His elegantresidential enclave, comprising six traditional Thai teakwood houses transportedfrom Ayutthaya and Bangkok‟s Ban Krua community, echoes Thompson‟s 30-yearlove affair with Southeast Asian art and cultural heritage

The same goes for his Thai house, which was no ordinary teakwood villacomplex filled with incongruous collections of antiques, but a breathing museum– even then – that embodies Thompson‟s life-long passion and whimsical designchoices. One day in 1967, while at the height of his success, he mysteriouslydisappeared into the Malaysian jungle, and thus began the legacy of JimThompson…

The most astonishing landmark of Samut Prakan Province is perhaps the ErawanMuseum. Since its completion, the colossal three-headed elephant statue (250tons in weight, 20 metres high and 39 metres long) standing on the pinkpedestal has become one of the most revered objects in the province, which hasattracted large numbers of worshippers. Hidden underneath the gigantic bronzesculpture of Airavata elephant is a 3-storey museum housing numerous pricelessantiques and religious objects. Many of them, in the past, were viewed assacred objects that brought fertility and prosperity to the land

The Erawan is not only the god Indra‟s vehicle but also a symbol of the easterncosmography. Therefore, each floor of this museum symbolizes the Thai beliefof the universe. The basement represents the underwater world meanwhile thefirst floor represents Mount Meru, which is the centre of the universe accordingto the Buddhist belief. And the highest level, in the elephant‟s belly, representsthe heaven above Mount Meru. The softly lit ground floor exhibits variousprecious antiques and the figure of the naga human which is a half serpent. Theupper level is beautifully decorated with the intricate stucco molding with five-colored porcelain inlays, fanciful supporting pillars and stain glasses. The toplevel is adorned with the exquisite art depicting the solar system and it is wherethe ancient Buddha images are housed.

Muay Thai or Thai Kick Boxing is a world famous martial art. It is considered bymany to be the most violent and exciting sports. The Muay Thai boxer wearsgloves and shorts, usually in red and blue, as international boxers do withadditional armbands and a headband, which has been blessed by his teacher.

Compared with international boxing, Muay Thai has a distinctive feature. In Thaiboxing, each part of the body such as fists, feet, knees, and elbows is allowed tobe used as a weapon to overcome the competitor. Moreover, its combination ofdancing and fighting is unique in style.

Before the match begins, each competitor will perform a dance, or what theycall “Wai Kru”, accompanied by traditional Thai music. Reasons for doing theperformance are to pay homage to gods and holy spirits for protecting, as wellas to pay respect to their instructors and opponent. A bout of Thai boxingconsists of 5 rounds, which lasts a total of 23 minutes. It takes 3 minutes tofight a round with a 2 minutes break between rounds.

Horse-racing first began in Thailand 100 years ago when King Rama V returnedfrom his state visit to Europe in 1897, and civil servants and students whostudied in Europe organized a horse-racing event at the Phra Main Ground as anact of allegiance to his return. This gave rise to the popularity of Western stylehorse-racing in Thailand. Not long after, His Majesty bestowed a piece of land tobe used as the country's first racecourse, which was the birth of the RoyalBangkok Sports Club.

The general public, however, are allowed to go in for horse-racing events, whichare held every second Sunday (the venue alternates between the Royal BangkokSports Club and the Royal Turf Club). Betting is allowed, and it begins at 50 bahton a 'win-place' basis only (you collect if the horse you bet on comes in first. Ifyou wager to 'place', your horse must come in first or second to collect).Incidentally, gambling is illegal in Thailand, but betting on horses seems to bethe only exception to the rule.
