Fire dampers provide an automatic means of localising areas offire in ventilation systems.

The FSD range of curtain bladed fire dampers are suitable forinstallation in walls and ceilings made from concrete orbrickwork, and will stop the spread of fire through duct, walls orfloors.

There is a wide choice of sizes available suitable for low, medium and high velocity applications and include rectangular, square, circular and flat oval connections.

The dampers are fitted with standard release 72°C fusible linksunless otherwise specified.

Note: The installer should note that all fire damper installationsplus required access panels have to be to thesatisfaction of the District Surveyor or the appropriateFire Protection Authority.

Construction • Dimensions • Materials

Type FSDType FSD shutter fire dampers are constructed with a 1.2mmcase and 0.8mm blades in galvanised mild steel to BS EN 101421991 FE PO 2GZ275 NA or equivalent.

Various construction options are available, these are given in thetable on page 7, standard supply unless otherwise stated is theFSD-A with a fusible link which has a fusing temperature of 72°C.

When fitted the twin catchplates are of galvanised mild steel(specification as case and blades).

When fitted the side seals are convex in shape to close the gapsbetween blades and case. The material is spring stainless steelgrade 302.

The closing springs (constant force) are also stainless steel.

The bottom blade of FSD...P...E - A...B...D...E are fitted with aring pull device to allow blades to be reset.

Type FSPThe construction is similar to type FSD, except that the blades aremanufactured from stainless steel grade 430.

Type FSEOf similar construction to type FSP, except that the case andcatchplates are manufactured from stainless steel grade 304L.

HEVAC Installation Frame Type H

The HEVAC Installation Frame Type H is built to specificationHVC 615183. Various fire damper designs can be used with thisinstallation frame, see below.

The installation frame is factory assembled with its respectivefire shutter damper and delivered to site as one unit. This unitshould be installed centrally within the thickness of thesurrounding wall or floor such that the centre line of the frame isa minimum distance of 50mm from the nearest face of the wallor floor.

On installation all fixing tabs except those which are completelyinaccessible shall be bent into the mortar joints between thebrickwork or blockwork surrounding wall or floor. Then withcement mortar fill all joints solidly.

In reinforced concrete the tabs should be bent out and tiedwith wire to the reinforced bars. The gap between the frameshould then be backfilled with concrete or mortar both sides ofthe frame.

Where more than one duct penetrates a fire wall or floor, adjacent fire dampers and frame assemblies must be separatedby builder's work of a minimum thickness of 225mm.All FSD, FSP and FSE types can be fitted in the HEVACinstallation frame.Note in all cases HEVAC frame is manufactured fromgalvanised mild steel.

10mm clearance between frame and fire damper to allow for

expansion.

Galvanised steel spacer to permit expansion.

Galvanised steel building ties.

Aluminium rivets fix the corner angles to the frame

Galvanised steel frame the corners left open.

Steel corner angles retain frame open corner.

15mm clearance between mitre corner.

Installation RequirementsThe installer should note that the installationand location of access panels is to be to thesatisfaction of the District Surveyor or BuildingInspector or the appropriate Fire ProtectionAuthority.

When duct size B or H is greater than1000mm, multiple dampers sections will berequired. With all multi section installationsthe proposed arrangements must be to thesatisfaction of the appropriate local authorityand/or fire officer responsible for theinstallation. Receipt of an order requestingmultiple sections will be taken by Trox as theclient having obtained this approval from theappropriate authority.

Installation with Sleeve and Peripheral Angles:

As an alternative for use where the HEVAC frame is notdesired, cannot be fitted, or for multi section arrangements, peripheral sleeves and angle frames can be constructed inaccordance with the following:The damper should be installed centrally within the surroundingwall or floor thickness such that the centre line of the frame is aminimum distance of 50mm from the nearest face of the wallor floor. The damper should be installed in a rectangular galvanisedsteel sleeve with a minimum thickness of 1.2mm.The fixing of the damper can be by tack welding the case onboth sides directly to the sleeve, or by the use of 20 x 20 x1.2mm steel angles which should be tack welded to the sleeve. In both cases welds to be at a maximum of 225mm pitch. The sleeve should be of a suitable length to extend through thewall or floor opening to enable the fitting of the cover angles andductwork. The cover angles should be attached to the sleeve by

6mm diameter bolts at a maximum of 225mm centres, andshould form a complete frame around the sleeve and cover overthe expansion gap (see table) required between sleeve and wallor floor opening. The expansion gap should be filled withcompressible, non combustible material (mineral wool). Thecover angles should be of such a size as always to form a coverover the wall or floor opening by 25mm minimum, and shouldbe manufactured from a minimum size of 38 x 38 x 3mm steelangle. All fixings must be positioned clear of the damper blade path soas not to impede proper closure.Warning Dampers supplied without installation frames asshown on page 5 or not being fitted into installation sleeves, must not be installed within a solid masonary structure as theouter case has no facility to cater for expansion during fireconditions.Note: Supply and fixing of sleeve and peripheral angles byothers.
