“Show Mercy and you will know joy.”

Dear Parents, Carers, Students and Staff,

Welcome Back

Welcome back to Term 4. Our prayers and thoughts are certainly with our Year 12 students who commenced their HSC exams last week. May the power of our prayers guide, nourish and keep them safe and focussed during this time.

The final term for 2016 will be exciting and full of festivities. This term is usually full of final assessments across all year groups. Students should be immersed in a study program that allows them to thoroughly revise all aspects of their studies in preparation for their assessments.

I strongly encourage the students to ensure that they are engaged in their learning and are organised in their approach to their studies.

Parents’ Association Meeting & End of Year Dinner

The Parents’ Association Meeting is scheduled to take place on Tuesday 25 October 2016 at 6pm in our College hall. An invitation is extended to all our parents and carers to attend this meeting.

Included in this newsletter is an invitation to the Parents’ Association end of year dinner, which is to take place on Saturday, 19 November 2016. Leadership learning for St Clare’s College Waverley students

The Sydney Archdiocesan Student Leadership Forum was held on 12 October and led by the Archbishop of Sydney, Anthony Fisher. The main purpose of the forum was to gather the young leaders to meet their peers, share ideas and be challenged before beginning their leadership.

The Forum was held at St Mary’s Cathedral College, four of our 2016/2017 leaders – Madeline Black, Ruby Lynch, Yolande Miller and Mackenzie Whillier– joined 150 other young leaders from Catholic Secondary Colleges across the Sydney Archdiocese. Archbishop Fisher said the worldly wisdom about leadership is to grab the opportunity because you have to make everything a win but that’s not quite the Christian wisdom.

“Appreciate the wisdom of the world about leadership but also the Christian perspective that includes sacrifice and doing the hard thing.

“Stand up for the right thing – the moral thing – not just for the most popular thing. Be bridge builders between official leaders – the principal, teachers and students – and between different year groups, the sporty types, arty ones and the not so popular ones.

“Be realistic about your opportunities and challenges and realise that you can’t do it all and you need support.”

Ruby Lynch, MacKenzie Whillier, Yolande Miller and Madeline Black, who are some of St Clare’s leaders in 2017, were inspired by the forum. The girls particularly valued hearing from other students about their leadership ideas and initiatives they are doing at their schools. They were excited to hear about the Year of Youth, a Catholic youth event being held in 2018, and are already thinking about ways they can involve our school and wider community.

National Child Protection Week

Two of our students, Ruby Lynch, Year 12 and Sarah Ranson, Year 8 were invited to the Governor General's launch of National Child Protection Week at Admiralty House on Friday 2 September.

Ruby Lynch and Sarah Ranson with the Governor General

Ruby and Sarah were invited as special guests for their voluntary contribution to NAPCAN's annual campaign from 2005 - 2014. Ruby, Sarah and other young people from the Waverley community have volunteered their valuable time and talent over the years, appearing in numerous campaign posters and resources.

NAPCAN thanked these young people at a special event being hosted by The Governor-General, His Excellency General, the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC. I am sure that you will all join me in congratulating Ruby and Sarah on such a prestigious achievement.

Year 9 Camp

At any time it is a huge ask for teachers to be away from their families, especially on overnight excursions. I have heard wonderful reports about the Year 9 students on their camp. Our deepest gratitude to Mrs Armstrong, Ms Anne Murphy, Mr Paul Arundel, Ms Courtney McNally, Ms Vanessa Mark, Ms Natalie Green and Mrs Kerrie McDiarmid for their generosity in making this camp such a great experience.

School Fees

A reminder that school fees were meant to be finalised by the end of Term 3. If you have outstanding fees, I would encourage you to finalise these as soon as possible. If you are experiencing difficulties in doing so, then please do not hesitate in making an appointment to meet with me or Kim Parente or Damienne Forrester. I am sure that together we can discuss a suitable arrangement to meet your needs and your situation.

Finally

I wish all the students and staff a great term. I also remind the girls to always to be persistent, hard working and prepared to do all they can to make a difference in their final semester report.

Thank you for your continued cooperation and support.

Blessings on you and your families.

Dear Parents, Carers, Students and Staff,

Feast of St Francis.

During the holidays we celebrated the Feast of St Francis and when we returned to school we held a Spirituality Assembly acknowledging the man St Francis and linking St Francis of Assisi to Pope Francis.

The focus looked at St Francis’ search for conversion, which led him to the ancient Church at San Damiano, where he heard the words, “Francis, repair my Church”. In 2016 as we consider the life of St Francis, we also consider the actions of our current Pope to understand what it means to rebuild the Church today. Pope Francis chose as his namesake our beloved saint, Francis of Assisi, because he is “the man of poverty, the man of peace, the man who loves and protects creation”. In the Spirituality Assembly the students were asked to consider what they could be doing to ‘rebuild Church’ today.

Annual Catechist Mass

On Sunday 9 October our Year 11 Catechists were presented with a certificate at the Annual Catechist Mass held at St Mary’s Cathedral. The girls are to be congratulated for their efforts in spreading the Good News to the young students in our local public primary schools. The girls have given of their time freely and generously this year and have used their gifts and talents in this special ministry, sharing in the work of proclaiming the Gospel.

In Week 1 our newly chosen Year 10 representatives partook in their Catechist training in order to continue this great work in our Church.

Archbishop’s Student Leadership Forum

Last week Madeline Black, Ruby Lynch, Yolande Miller and Mackenzie Whillier represented the student leadership body at the Student Leadership Forum held at St Mary’s Cathedral. They gathered with other young leaders from across the Archdiocese to engage with Most Rev. Anthony Fisher on their hopes and concerns for youth in the Sydney Archdiocese. It was an opportunity for the girls to listen, share ideas and learn from other young people in Sydney.

Year 8 and 10 RE Tests

Last Wednesday all students in Years 8 and 10 throughout the Archdiocese of Sydney as well as schools from dioceses throughout NSW sat the annual Religious Education Test. This is a compulsory part of our curriculum and results will be made available to parents at the end of the school year.

Catechist Training Report

Friday 14 October 2016, 28 Year 10 students participated in a Catechist-training workshop run by Mr Robert Milan from the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine who oversees the Catholic Student Catechists from the Sydney Eastern Region. The Catechist program is a form of evangelisation outreach program attached to Mary Immaculate Parish Waverley, where students from St Clare's College, teach and deliver the faith and mission of Jesus to students at Waverley Primary School, during their given scripture lessons.

It is a job that requires patience, passion and responsibility. The girls will work in pairs to create structured lessons for the primary students. Each lesson will have a different focus that is in conjunction with the liturgical calendar. The program runs for 12 months starting from Thursday 20 October 2016 until the end of Term 3 2017. This gives the opportunity for the current Year 10 cohort to participate in the program for 12 months.

The skills developed from the Catechist program will benefit the students in many ways by further developing their creative, leadership and organisation skills. It is a fantastic opportunity to serve the community, as well as, gain an insight into the career of teaching. The girls are all very eager to start planning their first lessons and to meet the Kinder to Year 6 students from Waverley Primary School.

Elise Matouk Year 10

On Friday 14 October 2016, 28 Year 10 girls underwent training to become Catechists. The role of a Catechist is to teach about the Scripture and the messages in the Bible to people who may not have the opportunity to hear it, but willingly wish to know about it. In the case of the St Clare's girls, we will be teaching at Waverley Primary School once a week.

During the training the girls learned; what it means to be a Catechist; what catechises is; how to teach their lessons effectively; and how they will benefit from being a Catechist. The Catechist’s relationship with God is strengthened and they are fulfilling the mission of continuing the Good News of Christ. The girls will work in teams teaching each year group in pairs and rotating each week. We wish all the girls the best of luck.

Special thanks from the Catechists goes to Mr Robert Milan for delivering the Catechists’ Training, Mrs Bjazevich for the organisation of the day and to Mrs Farrugia, who attended and supervised the entire training day.

Dear Parents, Carers and Students of the St Clare’s Community.

Often, teachers ask their students to summarise. Summarising is a high-order skill, and it involves taking the main ideas of a text, and rewriting them in one’s own words. Moreover, a summary is much shorter than an original text, and it provides readers with an overview of a topic. So, how can a student develop an effective summary? Here are some suggestions:

• Highlight just the main ideas of a text. Then, merge (combine) these ideas together into your own words.

• Use your own words, rather than the words of the original author. Doing so should help to improve your understanding of the original text, as well as the topic.

• Cite your source, using a recognised referencing method, such as the Harvard Referencing Format. For example:

- According to Brown (2016), …

- As evident in the work of Green (2016), …

- As revealed in the findings of White (2016), …

From the Director of Learning, Teaching and Innovation

Additionally, citing your sources will remind your readers that you are summarising the work of another person.

Furthermore, please be advised that the Year 12, 2016 - 2017 Curriculum Evening will occur in the San Damiano Hall at St Clare’s College from 6:00 pm on Wednesday 2 November 2016. During that evening, parents, carers and Year 12, 2016 - 2017 students will have an opportunity to listen to important information concerning College expectations and Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards (BoSTES) requirements in relation to students’ completion of the Higher School Certificate (HSC).

Best wishes and prayers.

Year 8 PDHc

At the end of Term 3 8PDHc went on a fantastic Tamarama to Bronte walk. The girls took in the amazing view of the coastline and searched desperately for whales or dolphins but they had already passed. While working on their cardiovascular fitness, the girls noticed the rope structure in the playground was free of toddlers so the whole class jumped and with a bit of teamwork the whole structure came alive with screams, dabs and many amazing poses.

This class never fails to find the fun in all that they attempt - that’s just a requirement of being a St Clare’s girl !

During Terms 3 and, Year 9 have been studying the unit "Sacraments of Healing". The Sacraments of Healing are Reconciliation (Penance) and the Anointing of the sick. This unit has been invaluable and interesting to learn about and concluded with a class debate on the topic ‘To forgive or not to forgive’.

The class was split into two teams and each team worked together to come up with well written points, arguments and relevant contemporary examples.

To sum up the affirmative team's points it can be said that forgiving doesn't mean we will put ourselves back into a hard situation or that we suddenly accept or approve of the person's continued or wrong behaviour. It simply means we release them from the wrong they committed against us, we forgive them because God forgave us.

The negative team also came up with strong points stating that if we forgive, people will not learn a lesson and sometimes forgiving goes against others and God's morals.

Overall, this unit was worth learning and very interesting.
