“The REHAU RAUVITHERM system makes life so much easier as it’s a very user friendly system. The training course gives a really good introduction to the product and once fitters get the hang of the methodology, it’s very straightforward. It really doesn’t take them long to become competent” Installer, NLAT: +44 (0)1989 762600 www.rehau.co.uk/districtheating

Heating & Renewables Roadshow 2015 Page 3

Welcome to the Heating & Renewables RoadshowOn behalf of the whole team, welcome to the Heating & Renewables Roadshow 2015, the UK’s only regional exhibition series for heating and renewable energy professionals.

Coming to five locations throughout September, the Roadshows continue to offer visitors an annual opportunity to be informed, to communicate and collaborate with all the industry’s key players.

Renewables have been at the heart of the show since its first outing in 2011, and remain a key focus of our proposition. But this year for the first time we have expanded its scope to incorporate all forms of heating as the low carbon agenda continues to gather pace.

Traditional heating technologies are not only a principle entry point for installers, specifiers and contractors to access the world of renewables, but increasingly we see them operating side by side with heat pumps, biomass and a host of other green technologies.

There are several other exciting reasons why 2015 will be the best year yet. In this general election year, where a thirst for knowledge runs high, we offer an expanded and more tailored seminar

series across five theatres. A diverse programme of content has been developed to offer visitors guidance on policy, best practice and a glimpse at

the latest product innovations. You will be equipped with all the tools you need for your business to thrive in a continually-changing industry.

Several of our official supporting organisations have contributed to the dozens of speakers we have lined up for you including HETAS, the Sustainable Energy Association, Gas Safe Register and MCS.

We have also been busy securing maximum industry participation in the seminar series to bring the greatest added value to visitors by working with our four knowledge partners. REHAU, Edmundson Electrical, Stroma Certification/Greenworks and Sustainable Building Solutions will all be on hand to lead the content and bring their considerable expertise to bear at four of the theatres.

A big thank you to the 60+ exhibitors, without whom this show wouldn’t be possible. I’d also like to thank our supporters and visitors, and we wish you a successful and informative show.

KNOWLEDGE PARTNERS

Edmundson Electrical offers added value Edmundson Electrical Greentech invites visitors to visit the UK’s leading solar PV distributor. Greentech operates from 24 locations spread throughout the UK providing full local stocks of a wide range of panels, inverters and mounting systems, as well as accessories. Greentech locations also provide design and technical support.

Greentech is committed to working with the leading manufacturers in the solar industry, and is proud to sponsor The Greentech Theatre at the Heating and Renewables Roadshow.

The Greentech Theatre will feature presentations from four leading manufacturers:• Sharp Solar will be discussing energy storage, and their products in this fast developing sector• Enphase will be discussing the benefits of using micro inverters instead of string inverters• Solar Edge will be discussing how an optimised PV system will provide a better return• GWE will be discussing the opportunities that voltage optimisation provides to a PV installer

Each of the presentations offers increased added value opportunities for installers, whilst they give the end customer a better return on investment.

The Greentech Theatre will also play host to the Electrical Contractors’ Association, and its informative presentation on integrating renewables into the grid.

Get hands on with REHAU As a knowledge partner at the Heating and Renewables Roadshow, REHAU’s priority is to ensure visitors get as much as possible from their day at the show.

Its own stand will have a display of REHAU’s market leading RAUTHERMEX and RAUVITHERM pre-insulated district heating pipework so that customers can get hands on with the products and talk to REHAU’s team about upcoming biomass, biogas and AD projects.

The REHAU team is keen for visitors to understand more about how they can optimise efficiency and installation costs by using the right sizes and specification of pipe. They say that time spent at the show discussing specific projects will undoubtedly be worthwhile when they later come to draw up specifications and design schemes.

REHAU’s innovative domestic underfloor heating system REHAU Easy Heat will be on display as well as information on its RAUGEO ground-source solutions.

At the REHAU sponsored theatre, the company is also hosting useful presentations from the GSHPA and HETAS, and delivering its own seminars dispelling some of the common myths which still surround the installation of underfloor heating systems and giving demonstrations showcasing REHAU’s EVERLOC jointing technology and PE-Xa pipe.

There will also be additional presentations from REHAU’s technical team entitled ‘Pre-insulated pipe – the Installer’s choice’ and ‘Ground source pipework – is it all the same?’ These will be practical, interactive sessions and visitors will be able to ask questions and try out the pipework for themselves.

Towards the end of each day, REHAU is inviting visitors to head back to its stand for what it hopes will be a valuable but relaxing networking session. In line with REHAU’s European heritage, free German beer and pretzels will be served!

Signposting to the best in heating and renewablesSimon Ayers, chief executive of TrustMark, introduces the Heating & Renewables Roadshow’s key supporting organisation

It can be difficult to develop your business with too many people competing on price for the same piece of work. But knowing how to stand out from the crowd to win customers can be challenging.

Being TrustMark registered brings you that recognition as it is the only national ‘find a tradesman’ scheme operating to government endorsed standards. Over nine years ago TrustMark was launched as a quality mark by government to tackle the menace of cowboy tradespeople and has since helped millions of homeowners across the UK to find reliable and reputable local tradespeople to work in and around the home.

TrustMark will be 10 years old in 2016, but it has certainly not stood still – the scheme is reinvented, reinvigorated and public awareness of TrustMark has also increased again since the relaunch last year. It is seen as a trusted and credible badge which has stood the test of time and has become a dependable source for consumers, providing them with choice, confidence and protection.

What’s in it for you?But what makes TrustMark any different, and what’s in it for heating installers and renewable firms? In short, TrustMark is the only scheme which provides official recognition to tradespeople working to government-endorsed standards for all trades in and around the home. We check all three cornerstones of quality – trading practices, customer care and technical competence – and are the only ‘find a trader’ scheme that requires qualified inspectors to do onsite visits, as well as background checks on our trading records and financial status. All TrustMark-registered firms undergo more rigorous, independent expert checks than any other kitemark scheme.

TrustMark’s services are increasingly in demand. TrustMark-registered firms have had their details promoted to consumers more than 4.3 million times already this year as a result of public searches on the website and calls to our 24/7 helpline – this is a 86 percent increase on the same period just two years ago. In particular, we have seen a 83

percent surge in demand for heating engineers, plumbers and renewable installers for 2015, compared to the same period last year.

TrustMark is the ideal engine for growth in construction SMEs and microbusinesses who have a genuine commitment to high quality work and customer service and value the fact that they are not being fleeced to support an advertising directory or a website that just sells leads to the highest bidder. We have about 13,000 registered firms today, providing more than 18,000 services across more than 38 different trades.

These registered firms use TrustMark to boost their reputation, win new customers, and tap into guidance, services and tools that help them run a responsible business, such as helping them to be compliant with the new Consumer Protection Act and Alternative Dispute Resolution regulations from October 01. We are currently growing by more than 200 firms a month – this is steady, organic growth driven by the increasing public awareness of the scheme and by the collaborative marketing activities of TrustMark and Scheme Operators.

Please come and see us on Stand 65 and see how TrustMark can help your company boost its business and stay one step ahead of your competitors.

Heating & Renewables Roadshow 2015 Page 20

The aim of the ErP is to assist the EU in achieving its target to reduce energy use by 20 percent and increase the share of renewable energies by 20 percent by the year 2020. All products that have an impact on energy use, including boilers and heating systems, will be affected. In terms of heating and hot water products, ErP covers all domestic and commercial products where the output is lower than 400kW.

The ErP legislation consists of two directives – Ecodesign and Energy Labelling. Ecodesign sets the minimum energy performance and environment criteria for these products taking into account the raw materials used, energy use and efficiency of the product, weight and volume, information for users and durability. For Energy Labelling, manufacturers will be responsible for providing new energy labelling for products while installers will be responsible for providing energy labelling for a system.

Alpha’s new models, which fulfil the requirements of these directives, include the newly launched InTec2 XE and InTec2 CE combis; and the InTec2 SE system boilers.

Small is beautiful Designed with homeowners and installers in mind, the entire InTec2 range is smaller and lighter than their predecessor allowing customers to fit them inside a standard kitchen unit, which is great if the area is lacking in space. The boilers also feature a new and improved heat exchanger. Designed as a one-piece casting with larger waterways and lower overall water content, it delivers faster warm-up and with better circulation is more resistant to overheating and blockages.

The new range also features advanced combustion management so that the gas flow is controlled and adjusted as needed, resulting in improved energy efficiency. The gas adaptive valve also enables each boiler to work with either natural gas or LPG. One single electrode lights the boiler and senses the flame, all the time feeding information back to the gas valve via the PCB.

The smart PCB also contains a memory chip that holds key data, including user and calibration settings that can be

easily transferred to a new PCB if necessary, without having to re-set the boiler.

For installers specifically, the majority of the boilers’ components that would potentially need attention during a routine service are situated at the front of the boiler so they can be accessed and, if necessary, changed more easily. What’s more, with dry-change NTCs there is no need to drain the boiler before changing the NTCs, again saving time during servicing.

Train and gainWith installers being responsible for providing energy labelling for a system, the installer will also have to learn how to calculate a system efficiency figure based on the different components of the system such as the boiler, heat pump and controls. The system efficiency figure must then be added onto the ‘package label’ to complete the installation. As such, ErP will have an impact on the way installers work.

In answer to this, Alpha is preparing a one-day course that aims to help installers get up to speed on ErP including the new labelling procedure. The course also offers practical, hands-on training of the installation, commissioning, servicing and diagnostics of Alpha’s high efficiency boilers along with detail relating to the company’s range of renewable products.

See Alpha at stand 16.

Get ErP ready with AlphaAlpha’s new InTec2 boiler range will be on show at this year’s Roadshow, designed in accordance ErP legislation taking effect this September

Covering the bases: Alpha’s new InTec² boiler range is designed specifically with the new ErP directive in mind, affecting installers from September onwards

Heating & Renewables Roadshow 2015 Page 21

Celebration time for Krannich Solar Visit Krannich Solar on stand 18 in what is a milestone year for the PV distributor and solar specialistSince founding the company in 1995, Kurt Krannich’s innate passion for the concept, technology and benefits of solar energy has driven him to nurture his business from humble beginnings in Germany to international renown and success.

With branches throughout Europe – as well as in Australia, Japan, Mexico and the USA – the company also exports to Africa and South America, giving Krannich tangible experience of supplying solar systems and support in different markets, economies, geographies, climates and political environments.

This international diversity, coupled with 20 years of experience, affords the Krannich group an invaluable level of stability and resilience to the pressures, volatility and challenges of individual markets, as well as an enviable strength of centralised purchasing capability, believes UK COO Kim Mann.

Long term securityDespite the company’s impressive growth and success, Kurt has maintained absolute focus on the stable, long-term development of his business and this strategy, plus Krannich Solar’s continued self-funded status, has once again earned them the CrefoZert creditworthiness seal. This prestigious certification, awarded by Creditreform Stuttgart, recognises the company as having an exceptionally high credit rating, an achievement accomplished by just 1.7 percent of

German businesses. For Kurt, this financial stability sends an important signal: “The continuing bankruptcies in the solar industry unsettle customers at home and abroad, as well as suppliers. Especially for our customers, it is extremely important to award their contracts to companies that are stable in the long-term.”

Alongside this commitment to his company’s strength and longevity, Kurt also places huge emphasis on the importance of top quality products, technical expertise, high quality service and effective logistics, all delivered on a local, personal basis by each of his branches.

Best of bothWithin the UK, this is the task of COO Kim Mann and his dedicated team.

“We’re proud to offer PV installers and our other trade customers the best of both worlds”, Kim said.

“By delivering products, support and solutions that are tailored specifically for the UK market but

which have the value, strength and solidarity of the Krannich group behind them. This delicate yet vital balance of local autonomy and international power means we have the flexibility to respond to local demands when the UK market is good but also the stability to remain strong when market conditions are more challenging.

“This key structure has been integral to Krannich Solar’s strong growth over the last 20 years and I’m confident that this will continue.”

Looking aheadSolar power was widely ridiculed as unsustainable when Kurt founded his company in 1995, with the early adopters embracing the technology primarily for ecological or ideological reasons, but Krannich had the commitment to help drive the concept out of the shadows and into the mainstream. Kurt’s vision for a future powered 100 percent by renewable energy drives him to continue nurturing his business with the same focus and passion which inspired him 20 years ago.

Kurt’s head may be in the board room but his heart is undoubtedly in the more hands-on areas of his business. It is said that in another 20 years he will most-likely still be found analysing products and performance data, while enthusing his staff with the same passion for solar energy that inspired him to found Krannich Solar and steer it so successfully through its first 20 years.

World class: Krannich Solar has come a long way from its German origins to a worldwide presence since its inception in 1995 by Kurt Krannich

Twin appeal from CPSHead to stand 8 for detailed information on the services not only provided by City Plumbing Supplies, but also Sustainable Building SolutionsPart of the Travis Perkins Group, CPS is a specialist in quality plumbing, heating, and bathroom supplies, including renewable energy products.

2015 has been an incredibly exciting year for CPS. Major investment has seen the merchant vastly expand its network to maximise its reach and to provide domestic installers with an unrivalled range of services and products. Plus, the creation of bathroom showrooms in each new branch gives installers access to an additional customer resource and a team of design experts.

CPS also has a specialist spares offering called City Heating Spares (CHS). Investment in more counters within nationwide branches and the expansion of its comprehensive range of products means the time-pressed installer can use their local CPS as a one-stop-shop.

In addition to the availability of renewable energy products such as solar thermal, air source and ground source heat pumps, biomass, and rainwater harvesting systems, all CPS customers have access to the expertise of Sustainable Building Solutions (SBS).

Offering support and technical assistance to those looking to complete a sustainable building project, SBS compliments the products offered by CPS with a range of training courses, certification schemes, and design services.

For example, at the start of 2015, CPS and SBS introduced the UK’s first ‘e-learning’ RHI training modules. The online courses offer a blended learning approach, combining a professional presenter led e-learning module, with traditional tutor led assessments. The online courses include heat pumps, solar thermal hot water, and Part L Energy Efficiency.

Grant offers food for thoughtGrant UK will be welcoming visitors and keeping everyone refreshed with its eye-catching sponsorship of the food area So grab a cuppa and head to the nearby Grant Display Van where the friendly leading heating specialists will be showcasing the business opportunities in oil and renewables. There is also a chance to win a special prize….

Step on boardStep on board the Grant Display Van and discover the company’s innovative product range including condensing oil-fired boilers, solar thermal systems, air source heat pumps and also the very latest highly efficient condensing biomass boilers – Spira and Vecta, which capture and reuse the heat which would otherwise be lost through the flue system.

The Display Van provides a great chance to get up close with the technology, talk to the Grant team and find out how Grant products can potentially help grow your business.

Grant Spira condensing biomass boilersThe Spira range welcomes a new indoor model this year featuring a 5-18kW output. Importantly, this model will not only be exempt under the Clean Air Act, but listed on the MCS database.

Installations up to 72kW can also be accommodated by utilising two boilers (separately flued) with a central hopper/twin auger arrangement. This, along with the extremely high efficiencies achieved, makes the Spira a unique option when considering a biomass boiler.

Grant also manufactures wood pellet bulk stores in various sizes from 500kg to 6 tonnes. While wood pellets can be bought in bags (typically around 10 to 15kg), if space is available, a bulk store can be installed which can directly feed (by auger or vacuum system) the intermediate Grant pellet hopper supplied as standard with the boiler. This allows homeowners to buy pellets in bulk, which is more cost effective.

New Vortex combiFor those interested in the more traditional methods of home heating, Grant will be showcasing its very latest Vortex Pro Combi. Following valuable feedback from the

G-One installer network and training academy, Grant has also made some innovative upgrades to its Combi range.

Most oil-fired combination boilers are supplied with a 12 litre expansion vessel and it’s the installer’s responsibility to provide any additional expansion for the system. The Vortex Combi range now includes a 24 litre expansion vessel, as well as fitting a plug and socket connection for the Riello RDB burner, as standard.

These upgrades to the Vortex Combi models are designed to ultimately reduce extra installation time and cost, as in most cases a 24 litre vessel should more than cope with expansion for both the boiler and heating system and remove the need for an additional external vessel.

The plug and socket has been requested by service engineers to aid the removal of the burner during annual maintenance, making the job both quicker and easier.

Installer trainingGrant supports installers with an accredited installer Scheme called G-One, as well as several free of charge product courses. The training is accessible nationwide, with academies in Wiltshire and North Yorkshire.

Win!Grant UK is offering visitors to its stand at the Heating and Renewables Roadshow the chance to win a fantastic Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 7” tablet. Visitors only need leave their business card at the Grant Display Van. One lucky winner will be pulled out of the hat and announced at the last show in Manchester on 24th September 2015. Terms and Conditions apply.

Get peace of mind from Hep2O

Head to stand 1, where Hep2O from Wavin is showcasing the next generation of push-fit plumbing systems for installersCombining flexibility with security and an ingenious joint recognition method, Hep2O says it is the system of choice for modern installations.

The Hep2O push-fit plumbing system was designed using input from professional plumbers, and the result of this approach is a cleverly-engineered system which offers the benefits installers need on site. One of the most important and unique features which demonstrate this fact is the system’s joint recognition technology which aims to ensure a secure pipe fitting first time, every time.

In4Sure technology features a cutting-edge design which incorporates the pipe sleeve and fitting itself, enabling plumbers to quickly and easily make a pipe connection that’s guaranteed to last. The installer simply has to slide the SmartSleeve insert into the end of the pipe, push the pipe fully into the fitting, and turn. This motion causes the castellated interior surface of the engineered interior surface to make a ‘rumbling’ sensation against the pipe insert, which is a clear sign to the installer that a secure connection has been made. It’s a simple idea, but the installer as well as the client is given peace of mind which is important in any installation context, ensuring the risk of leaks is minimised.

Another important benefit of Hep2O is its tamper-proof secure demountability which prevents either deliberate or accidental demounting

of a fitting. The only way a fitting can be demounted is to use a HepKey supplied by Wavin, which quickly and easily releases the pipe. The whole Hep2O system comprising polybutylene pipe as well as fittings carries a 50 year guarantee, and meets all current regulations including BS7291 and is WRAS approved.

Pipe supplied on coils can often pose a handling challenge to installers, however Hep2O pipe, which is available in both standard and barrier versions, is manufactured in such a way that it produces unusually straight runs off the coil. This is another way in which the system offers distinctive practical installation benefits, combined with delivery efficiencies. Lengths between 25m-100m can be supplied, in a choice of four diameters – 10mm, 15mm, 22mm and 28mm. In addition, straight runs of 3m can be purchased if required in three diameters. Hep2O pipe is highly flexible as well as durable, so can be ‘cabled’ through fixtures such as floor joists.

All pipe supplied within the Hep2O range is manufactured in white both to match the fittings, and to enable installers to provide a clean visual look to installations which homeowners appreciate. Being manufactured from

plastic provides it with important performance benefits of no scale build-up, in addition to a removal of corrosion risk, and a reduced risk of burst pipes due to freezing.

Hep2O also provides a full range of systems for underfloor heating installations, from panels and pipework itself, manifold and controls. Hep2O offers dedicated systems for a diverse range of solid screeded floors, dry floor constructions, existing subfloors or special floors such as acoustic constructions. All underfloor heating products are manufactured to high standards under Hep2O’s BSN EN ISO9001:2008 quality management system. Wavin is also again able to offer an industry-leading guarantee on its Flexius underfloor heating pipe, which carries an impressive 100 year guarantee.

A combination of listening to the industry and engineering innovation has produced a push-fit system in Hep2O which enables installers to provide a completely reliable result.

Plumbers can quickly and easily make a

pipe connection that’s guaranteed to last

Fantastic in plastic: Hep2O’s push-fit plumbing system uses In4Sure joint recognition technology to ensure a secure connection is made, minimising the risk of leaks

Hitachi turns up the heat

Hitachi Heating – part of Hitachi Air Conditioning Europe SAS – will be exhibiting three of its key air source heat pump products from the innovative Yutaki domestic heating product line up on stand 22

A previous winner of Heating Manufacturer of the Year at the InstallerLive Awards in 2011, the monobloc Yutaki-M has one of the best COPs on the market and requires no internal module inside the home with all refrigeration sealed in the outdoor unit. This is suited for smaller properties where space is at a premium, and can either be used as an alternative or installed in addition to a

traditional boiler. Yutaki-S and high temperature Yutaki-S80 are both split heat pumps and are ideal for new build and renovation projects with their high performance for heating, domestic hot water and cooling.

All Hitachi’s Yutaki air source heat pumps are MCS approved, eligible for domestic RHI and have domestic hot water (DHW) Legionella Protection and a five-year warranty as standard.

“We’ll be showcasing our high temperature Yutaki-S80 heat pump, and demonstrating both our brand new Hitachi heat pump quote tool and our recently-updated HiToolKit for Home product selection software, so there will be plenty of opportunities for visitors to get ‘hands on’ if they visit us on Stand 22,” commented Andy Hooper, sales manager – heating.

Cutting edge technology from IntergasIntergas is presenting its range of boilers as the perfect antidote to hard to heat homes in the UK

While the Dutch have been enjoying the benefits of this combination condensing boiler technology as early as 1996, it has only been since 2008 that we’ve been able to experience the difference in the UK.

“So what exactly is the difference? Aren’t all high efficiency boilers basically the same, built along the similar lines with small modifications that are hyped as ‘new’, ‘improved’ or ‘innovative’?,” said an Intergas spokesperson.

“In reality the Intergas boiler is the only brand that can lay claim to the hype and it’s all thanks to Intergas chief executive Harry Bosscher.”

In 1994 Bosscher invented an alternative to the breakdown-prone Geyser-style boilers being used in the Netherlands. His design for a combination boiler remains at the forefront of boiler technology almost two decades after its launch.

A key feature is what these boiler models don’t have: there’s no secondary heat exchanger, no diverter valve, no valve motor, no automatic air vent and no air pressure switch, in fact there are only 12 components, so there’s less to go wrong.

According to Intergas, its sturdy aluminium heat exchanger, designed over 18 years ago, has never had a mechanical breakdown and the boiler remains the only brand available in the UK today which condenses in both heating and hot water modes. And, with the exception of the flue and casing, there’s not a plastic component in sight either.

Look out on stand 42 for the ECO RF with its remote monitoring facility giving installers, contractors and DLOs the ability to effect a first-time fix and improve their duty of care.
