WHAT IS SHORT+SWEET?Now entering its fifteenth year, Short+Sweet is the biggest festival of 10-minute theatre in the world! Over 200 Queensland artists will come together to stage 10-minute works of theatre and cabaret in diverse and exciting lineups.

Held annually in over a dozen locations around the world, the festival has already helped launch the careers of countless theatre professionals. Over 300 short plays are produced by Short+Sweet every year, bringing together artists from a variety of backgrounds and making global creative connections.

Each lineup will move from outrageous comedy to grisly drama to sultry song. There’s no better way to sample a tasting platter of Queensland’s brightest performance-makers, think of us as the sushi train of the performance world!

HOW DOES IT WORK?Artists can apply to be a part of the Short+Sweet Festival in one of five ways:

Writers can submit an anonymous copy of their 10-minute script for assessment.Directors can submit a CV for consideration.Independent Theatre Companies can submit a proposal for their 10-minute work.Cabaret Artists can submit a pitch for their 10-minute cabaret act.Actors can register to attend an open audition for all directors and ITCs.

From the applications, we curate an exciting lineup of local makers to present their work at the festival. Individual directors are encouraged to select from our shortlisted scripts, and to cast actors from our auditions.

In the past few years, we’ve made a big name for short theatre. Audiences across Queensland have more than doubled since 2013, and our alumni artists have gone on to present longer works on bigger stages. This year’s festival promises to take our artists to new heights!

Throughout July and August, over 60 new short works will be performed between seven strands, in Brisbane and the Gold Coast. A further 10 plays will be presented in Townsville, during November. That’s nearly 12 hours of performance, 10 minutes at a time!

During each strand, anonymous industry judges will view and assess the performances. Audiences are also encouraged to engage in the selection process by nominating their favourite play as the people’s choice.

From each strand, one or more works will be selected for repeat presentation at the Gala Final. This lineup will be performed once more at the end of August, a “best of the festival,” in the Powerhouse Theatre. At the conclusion of the performance, awards will be presented to individuals and groups for recognition of excellence.
