BARN QUILTS OF LEROY BEGAN AS A BICENTENNIAL

project for the Town on LeRoy, under the auspices of the

LeRoy Historical Society. The fi rst quilt, “JELL-O Jigglers”

was painted in July 2011 at the annual Oatka Festival. The goal was

to have 24 quilts painted and erected in time for LeRoy’s Bicentennial

event on June 8, 2012. In less than 10 months over 70 barn quilts

were near completion. Most of the squares were purchased through

the LeRoy Historical Society and they helped raise money for the

Bicentennial event. The quilts have come to represent the pride shared

by the people of LeRoy, a town with a rich heritage and a vision for

the future that will guarantee quality of life for generations to come.

L Many of the quilts are on barns, but some residents have ap-

plied their creativity to the sides of sheds, garages and outbuildings.

There are also patterns inside local restaurants, Wolcott Street School

(painted by second grade students), the Village Green Nursing

Home and The Greens Senior Living Facility. L The Barn Quilt

project will continue after 2012 and the Town of LeRoy welcomes you to

return again and again to explore more scenic barn quilts.

Each quilt has a story to tell and these stories can be found online at

www.leroybarnquilt.org.

The Town of LeRoyis located near exit 47 of the New York State Thruway in Genesee County in Western New York about 30 miles southwest of Roch-ester and an hour east of Buffalo and Niagara Falls. The Village of LeRoy is located along Routes 19 and 5. LeRoy was first settled in 1797 and was known as the Ganson Settlement until the New York Legislature created the Town of Belona on June 8, 1812. Less than a year later, the Town was renamed LeRoy after a wealthy New York merchant and land speculator, Herman LeRoy. His son, Jacob became the land agent for 86,000 acres of land known as the Triangle Tract. Jacob enlarged the land office and created his residence which is now known as LeRoy House. Jacob and his family lived in the house until they returned to New York City in 1837. LeRoy is bisected by the Oatka Creek, which in the early years provided necessary water power for mills and industries. Although agriculture was a major contributor to the economic growth of the community, other commercial ventures added to the viability of LeRoy. The massive deposits of limestone were sources of architectural building material and limekilns provided necessary lime for mortar. Eventually LeRoy became known for agricultural implements, patent medicines, porcelain electrical insulators, processed malt, salt, and of course Jell-O. LeRoy was the home of Calvin Keeney, who developed the stringless snap bean. The unique history of LeRoy has been interpreted through the designs of many of the barn quilts.

The LeRoy Barn Quilt project was initiated in the summer of 2011 by Lynne Belluscio, Director of the LeRoy Historical Society as a contribution to the Town of LeRoy for its 2012 Bicentennial. With the encouragement and financial support of the Historical Society, the first barn quilt, “Jell-O Jigglers” was painted during the annual Oatka Festival in July 2011. The plan was to paint and install 20 to 30 barn quilts in the next twelve months, culminating in the Town’s Bicentennial celebration on June 8, 2012. The project was so popular, that in less than a year, over 75 quilts were completed. By Sep-tember 2012, the number of quilts exceeded 100. In October 2012, the LeRoy Historical Society received the prestigious “Community Art Award” from the Genesee-Orleans Arts Council for the LeRoy Bicentennial Barn Quilt Project. In 2013 the number of quilts exceed 100.
