Short Introduction to SLUSwedish University of Agricultural SciencesWelcome to this brief introduction to SLU. The presentation shows SLU's overall goals and visions, along with some key figures from our annual report for 2011. SLU is a university with a unique profile, engaged in education, R&D and environmental monitoring and assessment. SLU's knowledge is central to several of the major challenges we face, for example efficient and sustainable supply of food, animal feed, fibres, energy and materials for the growing world population.1

SLU develops the understanding and sustainable use and management of biological natural resources.

This is achieved by research, education and environmental monitoring and assessment, in collaboration with the surrounding community.

Vision: SLU is a world-class university in the fields of life and environmental sciences. Operational conceptSLU has a number of strategic objectives, for instance that the work we do should be of the highest international class, and that there should be close links between education and research. Research, education and environmental monitoring and assessment should be conducted in collaboration with selected higher education institutions, the relevant sectors and the community as a whole. One key goal is that SLU should strengthen Sweden's position as a knowledge nation and contribute to the sustainable global use and management of natural resources.2Genetic Resources and Biotechnology(For example, Umes Plant Science Centre, timber fibers, plant breeding and plant biotechnology, domestic animal genetic resources, molecular domestic animal genetics)

Animal and Human Health(Infection biology, reproduction biology, animal welfare science The Swedish Centre for Animal Welfare, food and health, green technology, domesticated microbes, probiotics, etc.)

Climate and Ecosystem Change(Aquatic environments, forest ecosystem structure and function, greenhouse gasses, etc.)

Sustainable Production and Natural ResourcesSystem for game and fishery administration, sustainable usage of forest and earth, domesticating of microorganisms, interaction of plant and fungus, plants in nitrogen cycle, production of bio-fuels, cycle of plant nutrition, livestock keeping, natural resources economy)

Quality in the Food Chain(From raw materials to the finished product, quality and food safety, etc.)

SLU consistently achieves a top-three placing in the Swedish university rankings. One key factor is a high teacher-student ratio. SLU also has more teachers holding a doctorate than any other university in Sweden. 6

SLU has a nationwide presence, its largest campuses being at Alnarp, Skara, Ume and Uppsala.

Sweden measures 1570 km from the South to the North but if you drive the shortest road is 2083 km and on a day with good driving conditions it takes around 24 hours to get from one end to the other. If you go the same distance south you end up in Rome!

SLU nationwideSLU develops knowledge on agriculture, forestry and horticulture from Skne in the south of Sweden to Norrbotten in the far north. This geographical distribution also provides a unique opportunity for regional collaboration. SLU conducts activities of varying scope at just over 30 locations in the country, including all experimental parks and experimental stations.7

Winter! The days before Christmas are the shortest of the year, the sun is only up for just over 6 hours. However, previous EMFOL students say the dark time of year is easier to cope with than when it is daylight for 18.5 hrs and never gets darker than dusk!15
