Short Film – Boy (YouTube) The film starts off with a shot of a person in a shop looking at boys clothing, but you can only see the back on this persons hoodie. It looks like a boy bout you cannot be sure as their identity is concealed. There is then a close up of the trainers walking through the store, making you think its a boy automatically which raises the issue of stereotyping. The next shot is a mid shot of the girl (Emile) looking at the boy clothes and then a POV shot from her view of her mother picking out girly clothes for her, this instantly shows the issue with her gender and the clash between her and her mother. When she goes up to her mum with the clothes she would like to buy her mother laughs at her and we then hear the dialogue “That’s boy clothing, you have to wear a dress when Suzanne and her mum come over” enhancing the issue and showing her mum as a controlling person who cares more about what other people think rather than her own daughters feelings. In the scene in the bathroom the colour palette consists of olive colours (green, beiges and yellows) creating a dull but serene feeling. Shaky handheld camera movement is used in this scene which may be symbolising her uneasy thoughts and her shaky emotions, which leads on to Emile wrapping bandages against her breasts in order to make them look flat. Close up shots are used in this scene to show us her facial expressions which mainly expressed sadness and angst. Emilies hair is wet and she has no makeup on showing that she has just come out of the shower. As she is looking in the mirror there is a close up shot of lipstick that she is holding, making us believe that she is going to put it on. The silence in this scene makes it more intense and also makes you focus more on what is going on in the film.

She is placed in the middle of the frame blocking the mirror which leaves the audience wandering what is happening. There is then a quick cut to her face smiling then cuts to the mirror and you see that she has drawn a penis on the mirror. Which are two contradictory things as you think she is wearing lipstick to be girly but she draws a penis; a masculine object. Her mum walks in and then they have an argument, when Emile storms out the lighting goes from low key to high key in a flash and we see her packing and jumping out of her bedroom window. He lighting may be symbolising that her happiness is outside of home and her misery (darkness) is inside.Emilie and her brother are dressed similarly as she wears a hat, hoodie, jeans and trainers and he wears a cap, top, jeans and trainers. Showing that they are a like unlike their mother who we see wearing a dress and a cardigan making her an outcast. When Emilie arrives home there is a low angle shot of her mother talking to her, this makes it look as if her mum is looking down on her and that she has more power. In Emilies room the lighting is high key with the colour palette consisting of whites. She starts cutting her hair off and it cuts to her trainers with her hair falling beside them, linking to the first shots that we saw of her trainers when her identity was concealed and we did not know her gender. At the dinner scene everyone is dressed formally, yet Emile comes to the table wearing a short, hoodie and a hat that is also showing her new haircut. The shorts are prolonged which gives time to show the emotions of all the characters.A shot of Emile standing in the doorway shows that her mother has trapped and confined her, whilst in the background you have her mother asking her son whether she is a bad parent. When her mother hits her it cuts straight away to her brother walking through the door and then back to Emile crying then to her hugging her brother. These quick cuts show the tension and intensity between the family and the divide between mother and children. We then see the mother telling the brother to take his tie off and she them puts it onto Emile showing her acceptance of her feelings. They then hug, then it cuts to an extreme close up of Emiles eye which is the same shot that was used when she was hugging her brother for comfort showing her relationship with her mother may be improving and she is actually gaining comfort for her.The screen then cuts to black, showing a sudden end which may be showing the sudden end to all of her problems.
