How to BookBookings open: Members – Monday 8 June 2015 General – Wednesday 10 June 2015 Short courses can be booked by either returning the completed booking form or by telephoning the Education Department on 0131 248 2937 between 9.00am and 5.00pm. Full payment must be made at the time of booking.

The first price shown in the price list is the full price of the course, the second price listed is the price for Friends of RBGE.

Advanced booking for Members is by postal booking form only. Phone bookings will only be accepted from Wednesday 10 June when the general bookings open.

Cancellations Courses may have to be cancelled due to low uptake, or other unexpected circumstances and a full refund will be given. We will make every effort to notify you of a cancellation, so it is important to provide both your daytime and evening phone numbers and email address if you have one. Some courses may not be able to run if the Garden has to close due to high winds or other severe weather. This will be indicated on your course outline. If this seems likely, please contact the Garden before you set out.

Refunds/TransfersIf you need to cancel your booking please inform the Education Department in writing (letter or email) as soon as possible. The cancellation is effective from the date your communication is received and is subject to the following charges:

n For cancellations with more than 4 weeks’ notice we will refund your payment less 15%

n For cancellations with 4 weeks’ notice or less we will refund your payment less 50%

n For cancellations with 1 week’s notice or less we regret we are unable to refund your payment unless there are exceptional circumstances. However if we are able to fill your place at short notice we will offer a 50% refund

Transfers will be treated as a cancellation and re-booking unless there are exceptional circumstances.

Introduction to Botanical Art This intensive course is aimed at anyone new to botanical painting or watercolour and consists of a mixture of structured and individual tuition, demonstrations and exercises designed to build up knowledge and experience.

Price includes lunch. Taught by Lyn Campbell.

Runs: July

Create your own Wedding Flowers This one-day workshop will give you the skills needed to create your own uniquely gorgeous wedding arrangements. Using a variety of beautiful blooms – many of which will be cut from the Garden – you will learn how to put together your own bridal bouquet, buttonholes and corsages, as well as a simple, yet highly effective table decoration. In addition to this hands-on experience, you will also be given hints and tips on growing your own cut flowers. Refreshments will be provided. Taught by Georgina Ankers and Robyn Macdonald.

Botany for Beginners A chance to investigate basic functions, evolution and ecology of familiar and less familiar plant species throughout this intensive four-day course; exploring plants in their garden habitat and under the microscope. Taught by Greg Kenicer.

Expressive Watercolour Landscape Referring to the great watercolourists of the past, landscape artist and tutor David Forster will use outdoor painting in the splendid setting of the Gardens to explore the life and richness of watercolour.

Runs: August

Painting Light & Colour On this two-day workshop we will be spending the first day out in the Gardens making observational drawings of flowers and plants using a variety of drawing media including pencil, charcoal and compressed charcoal. The following day we will be creating a painting from those drawings using your preferred water based medium. As part of the course a delicious summer afternoon tea will be served on the second day. Taught by Helen Jackson.

Weekly Classes

Introduction to HorticultureA ten-week theoretical course covering a range of topics, from soil science to pruning to plant anatomy. Suitable as an overview of horticulture for absolute beginners, or as a stepping stone to the RHS (Level 2) Certificate in Horticulture. Taught by RBGE staff.

Ethnobotany (Plants and People)This 11-week course looks at the ways in which humans have used plants from pre-agricultural societies, through to the drive for sustainable plant use in the present day. A module of the BSc in Horticulture with Plantsmanship. Taught by Greg Kenicer.

Plant GeographyThis 11-week course investigates the ways that plants have adapted to the incredible diversity of habitats available on Earth. As this course is a module of the BSc in Horticulture with Plantsmanship we are unable to confirm the dates at the time of print. Victorian HorticultureLooking at the innovations and passions that drove one of Britain’s golden ages of horticulture. Weekly ClassesBeginning Botanical IllustrationThis ten-week class introduces students to techniques in botanical painting. Students will develop drawing skills, learn to use watercolours and pen and ink effectively and create work inspired by fresh material from the Garden.

Continuing Botanical IllustrationDesigned to help those moving on from the beginner’s courses, this course will introduce different media and more involved drawing and colour mixing with each ten-week block focusing on a different subject. The terms can be booked individually and studied in any order.

n Term 1 will consist of trying out materials and media that you may not have used before such as coloured pencil, pen and ink, and other paints, as well as varying papers and vellum.

n Term 2 will look at how you begin to draw something more complex, like pineapples. Starting simply, and by using measuring techniques, we will unravel the mysteries of the complex form.

Drawing Chilean Rainforest GladeSarah Simblet

An exploration of the beauty and diversity of the Chilean conifer species growing at RBGE. This two day course uses dip pen, ink and a sketch book to explore the architectural form and botanical detail of a diverse range of conifers. Sarah will discuss and demonstrate ways of drawing whole trees together with their stems leaves and cones and she will also share some of her own drawings and sketchbooks.

Creating Vibrant Colours and Tactile Textures Ann Swan

A two-day intensive colour pencil masterclass with Ann Swan learning how to create strong vivid colours and tackle tricky textures taking inspiration from the current exhibition of Chilean Plants and focussing, wherever possible, on plant material of Chilean origin.

Leaves Up CloseRachel Pedder-Smith

This workshop will focus on the Illustration of leaves, looking the structure of leaves, how to paint pale and dark veins and also capture the many different surface textures of leaves. Rachel will also talk about her work, recent pieces and her PhD project. For this project Rachel illustrated one specimen from every flowering plant family using herbarium specimens from the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew.

Nordic WalkingNordic Walking is a specific fitness technique that enhances everyday walking with the use of poles. This adds two massive benefits to your walking, the use of poles tones the upper body muscles and abdominals as well as the legs and bottom all while burning 20% more calories than ordinary walking. Nordic walking is great for people with knee or back problems as the poles provide support for the whole body, poles are provided. Taught by Trevor Jones.
