— Jonel FactorVisual Merchandising – IntroductionVisual Merchandising – Styling for Retail and Display

Jonel Factor has been working as a visual merchandiser in the Philippines for over three years. He travelled to Australia to refresh and upgrade his skills with RMIT Short Courses.

I was drawn to RMIT’s renowned design facilities, which allow their students to have a complete experience in learning different fields.

The visual merchandising (VM) course is very informative and hands-on, allowing students to practise real VM work. It combines discussion and practical design processes, which helps the students to put theory into practice – the best learning process.

RMIT is the best learning environment because it is fully equipped with facilities that inspire and support students to be more creative.

I have plans to pursue more study at a higher level. Short courses have allowed me to experience what it could be like studying in RMIT and it definitely meets my expectations. That’s why I’m working on my application for a longer program right now.

— Bin Dixon-WardJewellery and Accessories: 3D Modelling and Printing

Bin Dixon-Ward was one of the first contemporary jewellery makers to employ digital technologies and 3D printing in her work. Bin has exhibited in Australia, Europe, Japan and North America and is the recipient of several awards including the Itami Award in Japan and Toowoomba Contemporary Wearables Student Prize.

Bin’s work is held in public and private collections including the National Gallery of Victoria, the RMIT W.E. McMillan Collection, the Powerhouse Museum and Musée des Arts Décoratifs (the Louvre), in Paris.

Bin’s approach is making contemporary jewellery as a way of understanding the built environment, communicating her interest in urban landscapes and the role of digital technologies in crafts.

— Claire BestShoe Making: Creating Footwear by Hand

Shoe Making – Intensive: Derby

Shoe Making: Sandals

The shoe making short courses give you a fun, comprehensive and detailed introduction to shoe making. Students are guided through the processes of designing, pattern cutting, sewing and hand lasting a pair of shoes for themselves. It’s about learning new hand skills and welcoming craft enthusiasts and shoe lovers alike into the wonderful world of making your own footwear.

RMIT is host to the only remaining accredited footwear course in Australia and has a state-of-the-art footwear workshop. It is a great opportunity to be able to teach in such a highly regarded school as the footwear teacher in the short course program, to inspire future shoe makers and designers – and at such a high standard.

As well as focusing on traditional footwear designs, I specialise in playing on classic footwear forms with my unique range of handpainted shoes. Treating the leather as a drawing surface, these creations are a celebration of the one-off nature of the bespoke making process.

— Tim CameronRhinoceros – Level 1

Tim received a Master of Architecture from the University of Melbourne where he learnt Rhino 3D and Grasshopper, using them frequently to fabricate large-scale architectural prototypes. Finding particular enjoyment from working on complex problems through rapid prototyping and developing the skill of translating digital models to physical with a range of fabrication tools (CNC Router, 3D printers and laser cutters) led him to build new bespoke fabrication tools.

I’ve been using Rhino 3D for over a decade, and I am still learning new tips and tricks from my students!

I like to take complex problems and break them down step by step, to understand them and look for elegant solutions, often using the translation from digital to physical in this process.

I like to see the slow reveal of the problem and emerging solution through iterative solutions. When an iteration is successful based on previous experience it’s exciting for me.

People who complete this course are able to design, make and fabricate using Rhino 3D. Others use Rhino 3D for drafting, rendering or as a design iteration tool.

— Paz PisarskiMusic Production – Creating Your Own Tracks

I’m a classical acoustic guitarist based in Melbourne. Prior to this course, I had minimal knowledge about the tech side of music production and had no idea where to even begin. However, after having completed this course, I now feel confident with recording and mixing my own guitar music at home.

Mark Kelson made this course immensely fun and engaging. He also made it relevant to each individual, taking into account our differing interest areas and levels of knowledge.

Since the course, I have now set up a small home recording studio, mixed my own guitar music and had my music air on the radio! If you’re curious about sound recording and producing music, you should definitely enrol. I highly recommend it.

— Alyssa SmedleyAdobe After Effects – Beginning Motion Graphics

Alyssa is a freelance animator, illustrator and designer. She is also a founder, co-director and creative at Pirate Size Productions.

Motion graphics is one of those fields that isn’t really restricted to a sector. It overlaps so many fields. If you ever have to communicate a story or an idea online, in video, in film on the socials... motion graphics techniques will help you do it better.

Come to week one with ideas in mind of the holes in your knowledge that you want to fill. Get a Pinterest, sign up to Behance, nab an invite to Dribbble, scope out some Vimeos... Come to class ready to share your greatest and wildest dreams. Then, over the next eight weeks, we’ll get you started on the mountainous, bendy, windy, valleyed, topsy-turvy, multiplane highway to motion graphics adventures.
