The Shore Conference tookhome 11 NJSIAA sectional

championships this season – sixfor the girls (Freehold Township,Colts Neck, Holmdel, ShoreRegional, Toms River South andPoint Pleasant Boro) and five forthe boys (Christian BrothersAcademy, Freehold Township,Ocean, Holmdel and Toms RiverSouth). This past weekend, threeShore girls teams won at least ashare of the overall group title, including a golden goal victoryand an upset that ended a GroupIII dynasty. On the boys side, two teams represented the

Shore Conference in the group finals, but bothfell short, including one in heartbreakingfashion. Below is a recap of the weekend actionat the soccer group finals at Kean University.

Girls NJSIAA Group FinalsGroup IShore 2, Glen Ridge 1 (OT)Freshman Hannah Birdsall served a corner

kick off two Glen Ridge defenders and into thenet for the golden goal in the 93rd minute andthe Blue Devils (21-4-1) pulled out a win overthe Ridgers (17-6-1) for their first outrightNJSIAA group championship. Shore had been tothe previous three finals, but lost twice andshared the title with Ridge in 2013.

Freshman Frankie McDonough staked Shoreto a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute by burying a 25-yard strike to the far right corner of the goal. Thefreshman, who finished the team-leader with 23goals, took a pass from Birdsall, turned and hit adipping shot that tucked into the back corner ofthe goal.

McDonough later dribbled through the defensefor another quality chance in the 36th minute,

but her shot bent just wide of the far left post.

Glen Ridge tied the game in the 50th whenjunior Galen Lew headed in a free kick by juniorColleen Grady. After Shore controlled the firsthalf by outshooting the Ridgers 6-3, Glen Ridgeresponded by limiting Shore's chances andclosing the gap in shots to 10-7.

Shore nearly won the game twice in the firstovertime period, first on a one-timed poke bysenior Shannon Bonner that rolled just wide ofthe right post. Junior Devon McDonough latergot her head to a corner kick by Birdsall, but hershot stayed over the crossbar in the 88th minute.

Ramapo 2, Holmdel 0The Indians (21-3-2) scored on two corner

kicks by Monica Scaglione within four minutesof one another late in the first half and went onto beat the defending champion Hornets (16-7-1)for their 13th overall group title and first inGroup II since moving from Group III.

Karlie Brogan headed home a goal in the 29thminute on Scaglione's service to break ascoreless deadlock. Olivia Kraebel flicked in aheader 3:05 later on a corner kick from the sameright corner by Scaglione to send the Indians tohalftime with a 2-0 lead.

Holmdel senior Hannah Lee made a bid for her22nd goal of the season in the 43rd minute, buther one-time volley from eight yards out hit thecrossbar.

Kraebel nearly scored her second goal in the50th minute, but her 10-yard strike drilled thebottom of the crossbar and came down in play.

Holmdel goalkeeper Mattie Milkowski savedfive shots, but the Hornets could not overcome a14-1 Ramapo advantage in shots.

Ramapo's win avenges last year's 1-0 loss toHolmdel in which the Hornets won their firstNJSIAA group title by beating the mostdecorated public school team in the history ofthe state tournament.

Group III FinalColts Neck 1, Northern Highlands 0Frankie Tagliaferri earned a penalty kick in the

55th minute and cashed in for the lone goal ofthe game as the Cougars (24-0-1) held on to stunthe previously unbeaten and four-time defendingchampion Highlanders (22-1-1) to win the firstgroup title in program history.

Less than a minute before taking the winningkick, Tagliaferri got behind the defense andchased down a through-ball from TaraWalenczyk to give her aone-on-one chance ongoal. NorthernHighlands keeper KaylaKlatt, however, stonewalled her shot tomomentarily keep thegame scoreless.

On the ensuingthrown-in, Tagliaferrigot the ball back, beattwo defenders and wastripped up inside thepenalty box. Shortlyafter missing abreakaway opportunity -Colts Neck's first shot on goal of the game -Tagliaferri drilled the penalty kick to the upperright of the goal to break a scoreless deadlock.

The Cougars held on for 25 minutes thanks toa more defensive formation than is typical ofColts Neck. Senior midfielder Ali Russo playedthe entire game as a defensive center fullbackalongside Amanda Visco and the Cougarsdefense kept the Highlanders on the perimeter ofthe 18-yard box. Sophomore goalkeeper LaurenFeaster did the rest by saving 11 shots, includingthree in the final six minutes.

The shutout effort by Feaster and thedefense helped the Cougars survive a 19-7shot advantage in favor of NorthernHighlands. Feaster dropped the ball on thefirst play she handled, but came right backwith a diving save to her right on a strike byAmy Harris 12 minutes in.

Colts Neck played Saturday's game withoutsenior forward and second-leading scorerBridgette King, who suffered a concussion at theend of the Cougars' group semifinal win overToms River South on Tuesday.

The loss is just the second suffered byNorthern Highlands in the last five seasons.Northern Highlands defeated Colts Neck, 4-0, inlast year's Group III championship game.

Group IV FinalFreehold Township 0, Ridge 0

The Patriots (20-4-2) handed the Red Devils(23-0-1) the first blemish on their record thisseason by playing them to a scoreless draw, which clinches Freehold Township its firstNJSIAA group championship.

Ridge owned a 14-8 advantage in shots, butgoalkeeper Kaela Chadzuitko turned away six ofthem to keep the previously perfect Red Devilsoff the board.

The best chance in the second half came on aRidge direct kick from just outside the 18-yardbox on the right side in the 73rd minute. ChrissyWeyrauch struck a shot that pierced through theFreehold Township wall, but the ball hit the nearleft post.

Nicole Whitley, Jasmine Colbert and LaceyPowell all had chances on net for the Patriots, but Ridge goalkeeper Samantha Carney was up

Ridge has now been to four finals in the lasteight years without winning one, althoughSaturday's draw did earn the Red Devils theirfirst state title since winning Group III in 2003.

Boys NJSIAA Group FinalsGroup II FinalGarfield 2, Holmdel 1Wojciech Piwowarczyk headed in two free

kicks by Dave Herrera in a span of 27 secondsand the Boilermakers (19-3-3) scored twice inthe final 2:03 to shock the Hornets (13-7-5) andwin their first ever overall group title.

Piwowarczyk slammed in a header on aHernandez service to equalize with 2:03 left

in the game and Garfield earned a free kick 24seconds later from 40 yards out. Herreradrilled a bending kick to the left post andPiwowarczyk flicked the ball enough to get itover goalkeeper Tyler Marchiano and in forthe winner with 1:36 left.

Leo Nobrega gave Holmdel a 1-0 lead with7:53 to play when he got behind the defense andran onto a pass from Justin McStay before takinga touch and slotting it into the far left corner ofthe net.

Holmdel's goal came just three minutes afterGarfield had a goal disallowed because of a fouljust before the potential go-ahead score foundthe net.

Group III FinalMendham 4, Toms River South 0Junior Jared Beneducci scored a goal in each

half and the Minutemen (18-5-1) beat theIndians (21-4) to win their first Group IIIchampionship. Beneducci scored the first goalof the game in the 12th minute off an assist fromsenior Julian Montilus.

Montilus took the ball all the way to theendline on the right side and crossed it across themouth of the goal. Beneducci made a run to thefar post, got to the ball and struck an uncontestedshot from the six-yard line past Toms RiverSouth goalkeeper Dom Pizzi.

Senior Christian Pedercini made it 2-0 whenhe hammered in a shot off a rebound in the 17thminute. After Toms River South applied pressureto Mendham's back line for the final 20 minutes

of the first half and the first five of the second, the Minutemen countered and Montilus touchedthe ball past Pizzi and finished to an empty netin the 52nd.

Beneducci capped the scoring in the 66th byheading in a corning kick by Pedercini.

The loss snapped Toms River South seniorCameron Geerinck's 12-game streak with at leastone goal. The senior striker set a new single-season school record with 28 goals for anIndians team that also set a school record with21 wins.

During this time of thanks, the ShoreSports Network would like to thank

Sansone Jr.’s 66 Automall for their continuedpartnership to raise awareness about thedangers of texting and driving while alsoproviding peace of mind when it comes thevehicles driven by teen drivers. As the parents of three children Paul Sansone Jr. and his

wife Chris know very well about the growing dangersassociated with texting. That’s why they have enthusiasticallysupported messages to urge teen drivers from ignoring theirphones will driving. “It’s really more of an awarenessfactor…that’s really more what the message is that we’retrying to send,” Sansone Jr. said. The couple have childrenages 23, 21 and 16 and their strong feelings about the dangersof distracted driving first began when their older childrenattended Red Bank Catholic and it continues today. Paulhimself admits that it’s a problem not just for young driversbut everyone behind the wheel. “As a parent it’s very scary, but I’ve even found myself saying stop, I don’t need to look atmy phone right now (while driving).” While the awarenessmessage might have started with their kids at RBC its spreadto Sansone Jr.’s 66 Automall on Route 66 in Neptune andwhen given the opportunity they were happy to join forceswith the Shore Sports Network through broadcast, web andprint outlets.

“I think it’s apretty prevalentproblem and

hopefully throughawareness

campaigns like thiswe can make animpact just likeMothers Against

Drunk Driving andother groups havedone with drinking

and driving”Sansone Jr. said.He added, “It’s a culture

change. There are aboatload of kids using newtechnology, so we want to befocused on making sure theykeep their eyes on the road.”

The joint campaign also features a component that resonateswell with parents as the Sansone Jr. dealerships (Nissan-Kia-Used) know how important it is for parents to feel that the cartheir teenagers are driving is safe. That’s why Sansone Jr. willoffer free safety inspections for teen’s vehicles no matterwhere they were purchased. Simply contact the service

he final twoweeks of the

2015 New Jerseyhigh school

football season havearrived, and for aselect group that alsomeans preparing toplay for a statechampionship. The Shore Conference has once again enjoyed

great success in the NJSIAA playoffs with nineteams set to play for sectional titles on SaturdayDec. 5. After having a record six state championslast season, the Shore Conference actually has thechance to break that mark with finalists n sevendifferent brackets.

This week there are also nine Thanksgiving rivalry games, with all but one being played on Thanksgiving Day. Thereare five games featuring teams ranked in the Shore SportsNetwork Top 10 and six games total featuring sectionalfinalists. The season is just about over, but there’s still somuch to be decided.

Let’s take a look at the sectional championship games aswell as highlight the top Thanksgiving games. All thesectional championships featuring Shore Conference teamswill be played on Saturday Dec. 5 at multiple sites.

North Jersey Section 2, Group IV

2-Phillipsburg (9-1) vs. 1-Middletown South(10-0), 7 p.m. at MetLife Stadium

Phillipsburg is the defending champion and is seeking itseighth sectional title in its 13th appearance in a championshipgame. The Stateliners only loss is to undefeated Bridgewater-Raritan, so they are once again a formidable squad. JuniorJaquan Jones and senior Manny Romero lead their run-heavyattack with 921 and 761 yards rushing, respectively. Romerois also a dangerous receiver with team-high 466 yards andsix touchdowns. In the playoffs, the Stateliners defeatedWoodbridge 35-20 and Colonia 28-13.

Phillipsburg will have its hands full, however, withMiddletown South entering undefeated and as the No. 1 teamin the state. The Eagles blasted West Windsor-PlainsboroNorth 55-0 in the first round before taking down rivalMiddletown North 41-14. Senior running back Cole Rogers

has been on fire in theplayoffs with 366yards rushing andseven touchdowns intwo games. He hasrun for 1,314 yardsand 19 touchdownsthis season. There’splenty of balancewith the Eagles’offense. Seniorquarterback MattMosquera has thrownfor 1,238 yards and16 touchdowns, andjunior running backJames McCarthy hasrushed for 584 yardsand scored 15touchdowns while

averaging 10.4 yards per carry. Middletown South has scored40 or more points in all but one game this season.

On the other side of the ball, Middletown South has one ofthe state’s best defenses led by an outstanding trio oflinebackers. Senior Dylan Rogers along with juniorsMcCarthy and Kevin Higgins are sideline-to-sideline tacklingmachines who can also get to the quarterback. Couple thatwith an always solid defensive front and a secondary that hasintercepted 17 passes this season and it’s easy to see why theEagles are unbeaten.

Mosquera is also one of the best kickers inthe state, giving them an added weapon onspecial teams.

Middletown South has been to a sectionalfinal five time since claiming its ninthoverall title in 2006. The Eagles came upshort against Jackson Memorial in last year’ssectional final, but will be the heavy favoriteto win this time and finish undefeated.

Central Jersey Group IV

7-Jackson Memorial (7-4) vs. 1-Brick Memorial (9-2), 4 p.m. atRutgers University

Class A South rivals Jackson Memorialand Brick Memorial will meet once morethis season, and this time it’s for all themarbles.

Jackson is the defending champion in the section, andalthough the Jaguars went through a rocky stretch where theylost three straight games and four of their final six headinginto the playoffs, they have turned it around at the perfecttime to earn the right to defend their title. The Jaguars tookdown second-seeded Brick 21-7 in the first round to avengea regular-season loss before crushing Steinert 56-10 to reachthe final.

Senior Kyle Johnson is now the starting quarterback forJackson Memorial after taking over for injured junior DanBarker a month ago. Barker is healthy now, but the Jaguarshave found an identity down the stretch with Johnson. Inrunning more of a zone-read rushing attack, Jackson has keptthe ball in the hands of Johnson and junior running back MikeGawlik on basically every play. The results have obviouslybeen successful. Gawlik has rushed for 383 yards and fourtouchdowns in the playoffs, and Johnson had a big game with162 total yards and two touchdowns in the win over Steinert.

Gawlik has 1,352 yards rushing and 14 touchdowns thisseason for his second straight 1,000-yard season.

The Jaguars defense has also been stout in the playoffs. They yielded just seven points to Brick and kept Steinertunder 150 yards of offense while forcing four turnovers.Senior defensive end Tyler Towns is one of the top passrushers in the Shore Conference and currently has 17 sacks.

Jackson will be playing for its fifth sectional title in its sixthappearance.

Brick Memorial entered asthe top seed and won bothgames, as expected, to reachthe final. The Mustangsdefeated Jackson Liberty 38-6in the first round and toppedAllentown 28-7 in thesemifinal. The last and only time the two met in thechampionship game was in 2005 when Jackson won30-28 on the final play of the game, a touchdown passfrom current assistant coach Cory Lavin to fullbackJoe Reggio with no time left. It is considered amongthe greatest championship games in Shore Conferencehistory.

6-Raritan (5-5) vs. 1-Lincoln (11-0), 7 p.m. atKean University

On paper this looks like a David vs. Goliath matchup, butRaritan will surely have something to say about that.

The Rockets have made a cinderella run to the finals byknocking off third-seeded Point Boro 17-7 and crushingsecond-seeded Delaware Valley 42-13. Raritan started theseason 3-0 before losing five straight heading into theplayoffs. For the Rockets to complete their incredible

turnaround and win an unlikely second sectional title theywill have to go through the No. 13 team in the state.

Lincoln has soundly beaten every team on its scheduleaside from Hudson Catholic, which it defeated 22-17.Quarterback Zymire Gordon is among the state’s passingleaders with 1,667 yards and 24 touchdowns. His favoritetarget is Frank Darby, who has 31 catches for 978 yards and11 touchdowns. The Lions don’t play the greatest ofschedules in the Hudson County Interscholastic League, butthey are undefeated for a reason and will be the big favorite.

Raritan was able to shake off a string of five straight lossesto get to its sixth sectional final, and will look to finish anincredible journey by pulling a huge upset. Senior runningback Derek Ernst leads the way for the Rockets with 1,453rushing yards and 17 touchdowns. He had a huge gameagainst Delaware Valley with 219 yards and threetouchdowns. Junior quarterback Marc Carnivale is a 1,000-yard passer with 11 touchdowns and has four veteranreceivers in seniors Jahciere Jones, Nick Pasquin, MasonSheehan and Jordan Smith. Pasquin has a team-leading 30catches for 436 yards.

Raritan’s only state title came in 2004 when the Rocketswent 12-0 and won the Central Jersey Group II title.

Central Jersey Group I

3-Palmyra (9-1) vs. 1-Shore (10-0), 4 p.m. atKean University

If Middletown South is the biggest favorite in the finals asthe No. 1 team in the state, Shore isn’t far behind as far asjuggernauts go. The Blue Devils have been completelydominant in 2015 and will look to finish if off with theprogram’s second straight and seventh state title overall.

You won’t find any one of Shore’s players withoverwhelming stats, simply because the Blue Devils have somany players to attack with. Senior Doug Goldsmith has 780yards rushing and leads the team with over 100 tackles.Senior Jack Britton is a big-play threat at running back withover 800 yards rushing and 12 touchdowns on just 65 carries.Junior quarterback Matt Pennel is a playmaker with his legsand has connected with senior tight end Connor Rempel forthree touchdowns.

Shore’s defense is ferocious and has recorded two straightshutouts in the playoffs. Goldsmith, Rempel, defensivelinemen Steve Fiumefreddo and Erik Graham and Pennelland Britton in the secondary are all standout players. Shore’sdefense is No. 1 in the Shore Conference allowing just fivepoints per game. The Blue Devils have not allowed morethan seven points in any game this season.

What makes the final interesting is that Shore hasn’tseen a team that throws the ball as much as Palmyra.Senior quarterback Max Smyth leads the state in passingwith 2,655 yards and 26 touchdowns. Sophomore ElijahKarnjay has rushed for 896 yards and 13 touchdowns, aswell. Smyth has two big-time receivers in senior KelvinHarmon (58-981-11) and sophomore Taj Harris (43-953-10).

Palmyra defeated a pair of Shore Conference teams toreach the final, taking down Point Beach 34-16 beforerallying to shock Keyport 35-34.

3-Williamstown (9-1) vs. 4-Toms RiverNorth (10-1), 6 p.m at Rowan University

Toms River North is one of the hottest teams in the statewith nine straight wins and an offense that can score ina variety of ways. The Mariners will be going for theirsixth sectional title, and are a perfect 5-for-5 inchampionship games.

Williamstown has been in just one sectional final inits history, a 43-20 win over Southern to win the 2012title and finish 12-0. The Braves have won 50 gamesover the past six seasons, so they have become aconsistent threat in what is routinely considered thetoughest public school bracket in the state.

Toms River North’s tremendous offense featuresdynamic junior quarterback Mike Husni, who hascombined for 2,401 yards and 30 touchdowns. He hasthrown for 1,259 yards and 13 touchdowns and rushedfor 1,142 yards and 17 touchdowns for his secondstraight season of 1,000 yards rushing and passing.Senior tailback Asante Moorer is a punishing runner andhas 1,437 yards and 16 touchdowns. Junior DarrionCarrington leads the receiving corps with 624 yards andfive touchdowns on 31 catches, and junior Bryce Wattsis also a dangerous option in the passing game.

The Mariners’ defense features one of the best playersin the Shore, defensive lineman Da'shon Copes. Heleads the team in tackles, tackles for loss and sacks.Junior linebacker Pete Laquaglia is approaching 100tackles to go along with three sacks.

Non-Public Group III7-DePaul (5-6) vs. 1-St. John Vianney(11-0), 10 a.m. at Rutgers University

St. John Vianney will be looking to bring home its first statetitle since 1980 and finish the season undefeated for the firsttime versus North Jersey power DePaul.

St. John Vianney’s offense is among the best in the stateand is led by Boston College recruit Anthony Brown. Thesenior quarterback has thrown for over 1,800 yards and runfor over 600 yards with 41 total touchdowns. The Lancershave a ton of playmakers with junior running back ChrisChukwuneke, senior running back Calvin Beaty, senior widereceiver/running back Khalil Haskins and senior wide outsMike Stapert, Marcque Ellington and Jeff Sheard.

Stapert has nearly 800 receiving yards and over 10touchdowns on just 30 receptions, while Chukwuneke isapproaching 900 yards rushing with 13 touchdowns. TheLancers are averaging a conference-best 45 points per game.

The Lancers defense often gets overshadowed, but isfantastic as well. They have recorded five shutouts thisseason and allow an average of 7.8 points per game. Juniorlinebacker Tyler Tedeschi is the leading tackler and Beaty isa bone-crushing tackler at linebacker. Junior lineman MicahClark is an FBS talent and most of the receiving corpsdoubles as defensive backs to give the defense loads of speedand athleticism.

DePaul may be 5-6 and the No. 7 seed, but they are asdangerous as any team St. John Vianney has faced this year. The Spartans lost out-of-state games to Good Counsel (Md.),

Canisius (NY) and Elder (OH), and also dropped games to St.Joseph (Montvale), Bergen Catholic and Don Bosco Prep. Inthe playoffs they have rolled over Camden Catholic (40-13)and Delbarton (34-7).
