Summer runs, summer ball skills, summer training…check! Laces are

tightening up, the cardio and off-seasonworkouts are all but done, and the onlything left to do is to wait for that opening-day whistle. Coming off another impressiverun for the Shore Conference teams in theNJSIAA tournament, only Holmdel was ableto bring the Group championship hardwarehome when the Hornets beat Ramapo, 1-0,in the Group II championship game. ShoreRegional and Colts Neck also made runs tothe finals before losing 2-0 in the Group Ifinal and 4-0 in the Group III final, respectively. ShoreConference powersRed Bank Catholic,St. Rose, Mater Dei,Wall and Howelleach made deep runsinto the tournamentbut fell short of theirchampionship goal.

Holmdel captured itsfirst NJSIAA title, and did sowith a valiant team effort.Going up against the 10th-ranked team in New Jersey, theentire Hornets rostercontributed in the win.Ultimately, the difference wasthe first-half goal by GabbyBair, who connected on a directkick from 25 yards out for thegame’s lone goal as the Hornetsheld off a powerful Ramapoattack.

Holmdel will once again be knocking on theGroup II championship door this year with themajority of their starting lineup back. Bair (27 goalsand 12 assists as a junior) returns for her seniorseason along with Rebecca Stanziale (5goals and 6 assists), sisters Abbey andKailey Flynn (combined 5 goalsand 16 assists), and should beable to build. on theiroffensiveproductionwith anotheryear under

their belts.Defensively, the Hornets are led by anotherpair of sisters in Maggie and Casey Matthijs, but will have to get used to another voicebehind them after the graduation ofkeeper Helen Burleigh.

Shore Regionalgot turned away in the Group Ichampionship by Kinnelon, but itwas one of the best turnarounds inShore’s girls soccer program.Coming off a 2013 in which theywent a respectable 9-8-4, the BlueDevils catapulted to an impressive18-6-1 in 2014 and along the waycaptured the Central JerseyGroup I championship 2-0 overMetuchen and a NJSIAAGroup I semifinal 3-0 winover Audubon.

The Blue Devils willbe looking for a thirdstraight run to theNJSIAA Groupfinal but willhave to lookfor offensiveproductionfrom Shannon

Bonner and Katie Stephens to pick up the production leftbehind by graduating senior Samantha McDonough. Combinedlast season, Bonner and Stephens joined McDonough among theteam’s top scorers with a combined 16 goals and 9 assists.

Returning to the offensive fray for ShoreRegional will be younger sister DevonMcDonough (5 goals and 3 assists),Sophie Haurits (5 goals and 3 assists),Jessica Egan (4 goals) and LaurenBritton (4 goals and 1 assist). The lateseason returns of both DevonMcDonough and Haurits from early-season injuries provided theoffensive power alongside Samantha

McDonough.

Colts Neck, another Shore Conference team thatfound success in 2014, returns top conference goal-scorer in

Frankie Tagliaferri, a Penn State commit and US U-17National pool player. The reigning Player of the Year,Tagliaferri returns as an offensive threat, as well as bringing herveteran leadership heading into her junior year. Entering the ShoreConference Tournament as the No. 1 seed, Colts Neck lost the SCTfinal to Wall, 1-0, while playing without Tagliaferri, who washonoring a U.S. National commitment. Colts Neck bouncedback to capture a Central Jersey Group III championship winover Wall, 2-0, before falling to four-time group championNorthern Highlands and ending a 20-3 season.

Along with the presence of Tagliaferri, coach DougPhillips returns a potent offense that includes AliRusso and Bridgette King, both of whom gainedvaluable big-game experience last season and alsoaccounted for a goal each in the CJ III final againstWall.

Wall Township is the reigningShore Conference Tournament Champion and willonce again be a team that creates headlines as a team to watchin 2015. The Crimson Knights returned the majority of theirSCT championship run but will have to replace foursignificant players in Abigayle Musto, DanielleGardner, Heather Arbachesky andChristie Cancro – all of whomgraduated this past spring.

The core four had been withthe varsity program for all fouryears of their high school

careers and the veteran leadership

came out in full force in 2014. The Knights ended their run with a recordof 20-4 and their first SCT Championship since 1998.

Coach Mike Juska loses the leadership and vision of Musto and Cancroin the midfield, and replacing their presence in the middle will be one of his

challenges this season. Defensively, the loss of Gardner as a sweeperand vocal leader leaves another void. The Knights, however, do returna veteran group led by junior keeper Alex Panasuk, and midfieldersDari Lyons and Amy Paternoster.

Additional Teams to keep an eye onthis season will be perennial powers Red

Bank Catholic, St. Rose, FreeholdBoro, Freehold Township and

Toms River North. Teamswith something to prove

after big graduation losses willbe Brick Memorial, Howell, Central and Mater Dei.

Golden Cleat Watch: Frankie Taliaferri (Colts Neck),Nicole Whitley (Freehold Township), Lindsay Hernandez (Brick

Memorial), Gabby Bair (Holmdel), Shannon Bonner (Shore), RebeccaHamilton (Howell), Casey Palmer (Brick) and Dasey DiElmo (Pinelands)

Games to watch: Colts Neck vs Wall (Sept. 10), Red BankCatholic vs Shore (Sept. 15), Freehold Township vs Howell (Sept. 28), BrickMemorial vs Jackson Memorial (Sept. 26) and all Shore ConferenceTournament games that are tentatively slated to start on Oct. 21.

For four Shore Conferenceschools the footbal l season

kicks off in just 19 days. Those schools (Southern, Central, Toms River South andDonovan Catholic) have all chosen to begin their nine-game regular season schedule on Sept. 4. Playing in whatis called “Week Zero” gets you one or two bye weeksduring the season depending on whether or not you play aThanksgiving Week game, which Pinelands and DonovanCatholic both do. Of course, it also means you have to beready to play a game that counts before Labor Day, so youcan be sure the coaching staffs are treating every practiceand scrimmage with a greater sense of urgency than mightbe the case if they were starting a week later.

Here’s a look at the two early openers onFriday, September 4:

CENTRAL at SOUTHERNhe Golden Eagles went 8-3 overall in 2014 under second-year head coach Willie Jacobs and surprised everyone bysharing the Class B South title with Barnegat while alsowinning their first state playoff game in 20 years.

Central’s championship season was fueled by juniorrunning back/linebacker Mike Bickford, who rushed for aschool-record 2,052 yards and 25 touchdowns whilecompiling 65 tackles and an interception on defense. Alsoback is senior quarterback Mike Miserendino, who ran for693 yards and 7 touchdowns and passed for another 8 TDswhile making 66 tackles from his linebacker position.Senior lineman Darius Marrow returns after earning All-Division honors last fall, although Central lost severaloutstanding linemen to graduation. Despite that, theyclearly will be one of the favorites in the division.

Southern finished 5-5last year and lost a pairof Class A South All-Division offensivelinemen in Pat Ferraroand Clay Robinson. However, senior PatWalker leads a stable ofathletic running backsand is coming off aseason in which herushed for 643 yardsand scored 11touchdowns whileearning All-Divisionhonors as a linebacker, where he made 60tackles. Sophomore JoeMiele is back after leading the Rams with 80 tackles and 4sacks, and battling for the starting quarterback job arejuniors Jackson Donahower and Sam Camaratta. In his18th season at Southern and 42nd overall, Hall of FamerChuck Donohue Sr. has a team that is athletic and boastssome speed, but is smaller up front than Rams teams of thepast.

DONOVAN CATHOLIC atPINELANDSThe Griffins are officially coming off an0-10 campaign, as their season-openingwin over Pinelands was later nullifiedbecause they used an ineligible player.Donovan lost their last two games by acombined six points, and you can betveteran coach Dan Duddy is pointing tothe season opener as a way to turn things

around. Senior David Calderon is back atquarterback and will be the key to theGriffins’ option attack. Among his toprunning backs will be seniors Alex Rosarioand Dezmund Hunter, 6-foot-5 seniorTaylor McShea is an impressive targetwhen Calderon takes to the air. DillonPaprota and Zach Crosio will help anchorthe offensive line and should be among theGriffins’ top defensive players as well.Giancarlo Stigliano has a strong leg asboth the kicker and punter.

In Brian Wilkinson’s second season ashead coach, Pinelands improved from oneto two wins and lost five others by eightpoints or less. The Wildcats’ defense wasespecially impressive, but gone are twooutstanding linemen in Joe Puggi andDave DeFeo, along with leading rusher

Jaylin Roman. Juniors David Fairl and Kyle Hreha willhandle the bulk of the carries in Pinelands’ double-tight,double-wing formation and will run behind a big offensiveline anchored by All-Division senior Max Schnepp andCam Winter. All four of those players will be counted onto lead the defense as well.

The Holmdelboys soccer team opened itspreseason at theToms River Kick-OffClassic with its usualhigh expectations, even with a lineupfull of newfaces.

NEWFACES ATHOLMDELWhen Brendan Wall came out for the high school

team as a freshman in 2013, Hornets coach JohnNacarlo considered it a victory that a talented youngplayer chose to play high school soccer overcommitting to an academy. Two years later, Wall isno longer at Holmdel, and it was not an academy thatdrew him away.

Wall is enrolling at Ranney School this fall, according to Nacarlo, and will be eligible to play forthe Panthers after sitting the required 30 days perNJSIAA transfer rules. The move is a noteworthy oneconsidering one of the top Shore high school players inhis class is going from a program that has consistentlycompeted for both Shore Conference and NJSIAATournament titles to one that wasn’t even a member ofthe Shore Conference until the 2013-14 school year.

Ranney went 7-10-1 last year and 6-7-1 within theClass B Central division with much of its productioncoming from players who will be back in the fold thisyear. Once eligible, Wall will join fellow junior ShaneKeenan – who set team highs in goals (six) and assists(eight) last year – as well as senior James Geraghty andsophomore Marc Greenstein in the lineup. Anotheroffensive weapon is sure to help Ranney blow past its 23

goals scored from a year ago, if not challenge a formidable Shore Regionalteam at the top of the division.

Holmdel has been a consistent Shore Conference contender overthe last five years and a big reason has been because top talent

decides to stay in the program. With the exception of SeanDavis back in 2008 and Santo Arena last year, Division I-

caliber talent has at the very least come back afterplaying for an academy and at most has committed

to the high school team full time.

Arena will again not be playing highschool soccer this year (he played as afreshman in 2013). Coupled with the loss ofWall, that leaves Holmdel with some questionmarks in the goal-scoring department.

Regardless of what happens up front for theHornets, they will be strong in the back with senior

standout Tyler Marchiano in goal. On top of returning oneof the top goalkeepers in the Shore Conference, Holmdel has

been strong at sweeper with sophomore Justin McStay, whomNacarlo expects to be a prototypical sweeper for a program that hasbeen strong at the position over this recent five-year run of success.

Senior Nick Chrystal and junior Hunter Chapman also played keyroles last year, and Chapman showed off his goal-scoring ability inToms River, which could turn out to be key for a Holmdel squadthat will again be difficult to score on in 2015.

REBUILDING THE WALL Like Holmdel, Wall will have to overcome a transfer from the

program. SeniorGerardo Medinaenrolled at St.Benedict’s Prep inNewark for thiscoming year, leaving Wallwithout one of apotential fourreturning starters itcould have brought

back this season. Theother three potential

returning starters includejunior midfielder Dan Frisch-

Harmon and seniors Zach Ferryand Connor Fry.

Wall’s Dan Frisch-Harmon Holmdel’s Tyler Marchiano

Page 9: Shore Sports Network Journal 2015 Soccer Preseason Kickoff

Frisch-Harmon was a highly-regarded defensivecenter midfielder as a sophomore in 2014,according to his own coaches andopposing coaches. Crimson Knights coachGarry Linstra described Frisch-Harmon as adefensive midfielder with more skill than thesuperior athletes at the position and moreathleticism than the players whose skills rivalhis. If Wall is going to contend in Class BNorth, Frisch-Harmon will be the junior leaderwho helps offset the loss of seven seniorstarters.

OCEAN PRIMED FORBIG YEAR?On the subject of Class B North, the

standout Shore Conference team forthose who made the rounds in TomsRiver was likely Ocean, which isunderstandable considering theSpartans lost only two starters tograduation and have a host ofreturnees, led by Monmouth Universitycommit Wadneson Alexis.

TThe Spartans got off to a slow start last year and cameup just shy of knocking off top-seeded Toms River Southin the Shore Conference Tournament by losing in a roundof penalty kicks. An early-season knee injury slowedAlexis, but it did not prevent a breakout by juniorMarlhens Nasanes, who will combine with Alexis to formone of the Shore’s mostdangerous duos.

Senior goalkeeper YanniKavarakas is currently battlingback tightness as a result of hissummer basketball schedule, butis expected by his coaches to beready in plenty of time for thestart of the season. OnceKavarakas returns, Ocean willhave nine returning starters, plusa standout freshman class thatcould potentially figure into thefold as well.

RARITANRELOADS AGAINRaritan has traditionally performed

well at Toms River, and although theRockets have a lot of roster spots toreplace, they looked like a capableteam again according to any of thecoaches who watched or faced them.A number of potential returnees willnot be playing on this year’s team, but a number of key playersfrom last year are indeed backfor Raritan, led by sophomoreLouis DiLorenzio, whoscored four goals as a

freshman.

Fellow sophomore Nick Benoit and senior Chris Medina alsoreturn and junior Chad Santopadre had a good weekend in goalfor a Raritan team looking to rebound this season.

A SOUTH AT A GLANCEBeyond the fact that it’s a preseason tournament, the weekend inToms River is a limited glimpse at the upcoming season becauseonly about a third of the Shore Conference participates. The oneexception within the entire scope of the Shore is Class A South, which once again had 100 percent attendance from its teams inToms River.

Toms River South is the defending champion in a divisionthat again appears to be pretty even. While it seems like theremight not be a dominant team, there was a similar sentimentlast year, and Toms River South ended up earning the top seedin the Shore Conference Tournament.

The Indians will have a host of starters to replace from lastyear’s team, but they were a deep roster last year that expects to

be able to turn last year’s depth into this year’s startinglineup, according to coach Ed Leibe. Senior CameronGeerinck was the second-leading scorer on the teamlast year, and fellow senior Mike Tapp was a key pieceon a standout back line, so both seniors will carry aleadership role into this season.

Jackson Memorial made a late push for first placewith a strong second half of the season last year. Withnine starters back from that team, the Jaguars could bethe favorite as practice begins. Coach Steve Badocalled junior forward Mike Schoener the “fastest kid inthe school,” noteworthy for a school with such a goodfootball program. Schoener also has scoring ability, ashe showed with nine goals last year as a sophomore.

With two more top scorers Andrew Jozwicki and JoeyStoltenberg also back as seniors and some defense-plus-size combination of seniors Joe Mamola and NickSchlageter, Jackson Memorial has a diverse roster thatalso offers experience. The Jaguars did not have theirfull squad for the weekend, but managed a goodperformance Saturday against Ramapo.

Toms River North was without standout senior JoeyHertgen for the weekend as he recovers from a stressfracture in his foot. Coach Joe Mahon said Hertgen wasjust cleared to play at the end of last week and wouldlikely return to action in approximately two weeks, which would line him up to be ready for the opener inSeptember.

Mahon also said that he was expecting close to 100players trying out for the team, and although varsityroles are still up in the air with more than half of astarting lineup to replace, he expects to have a versatile, deep roster with so much talent from which to draw.

The unofficial “biggest team” over the weekend wasBrick Memorial, which boasts a back-line of six-footers. Senior Alex Fernandez stands at 6-foot-5 andwill play in the center of the defense, which will be avital part of the Mustangs side with the loss of KevinSimek and Bryan Malerba, who graduated with acombined 32 goals during last season alone. BrickMemorial also had some starters away for the weekend, but senior Ed Seaman, junior Jake DeGennaro andsophomore James McCombs are candidates to pick upsome of the offense.

Lacey returns a pair of standouts seniors in RobertBiele and George Gartner who will look to carry aLions team that ran hot-and-cold last year. There wassome sentiment that Toms River East might be in arebuilding year after some key losses from an up-and-down season of its own, but Alex Matos is a returneewho should make an impact in A South. The Raiderswere competitive over the weekend against solidcompetition.

Southern struggled over the weekend, but the Ramswere not at full strength either. Senior Kyle Montesanowas the leading goal-scorer as a junior, touching the netnine times last year.

NEWCOACHES,EARLYIMPRESSIONS

The eighth Class A Southteam is also one of the ShoreConference teams playingunder new head coaches. First-year head coach and formerDonovan Catholic juniorvarsity coach Tom Vrazzittahas injected some energy intothe Brick program, which willtry to overcome the loss of 14seniors and climb out of thebottom of the A Southstandings.

Former Brick coach Ken Lynch is now an assistantfor Ken Oliver at Donovan Catholic and is essentiallyreplacing the coach who replaced him. Lynch has alsoserved as an assistant for the Donovan Catholicbasketball team, so the Griffins are familiar territoryfor Lynch.

Longtime Matawan coach Dave Deegan steppeddown at the end of last year and unlike Brick, theHuskies stayed in-house with Deegan assistant TylerIsaacson. Deegan left on a high note after leading theHuskies to a Class A Central championship. SeniorBronson Dhume will shoulder agood deal of the offensive loadwhile most of a junior-heavydefense returns.

B SOUTHFAVORITES?

On the subject of DonovanCatholic, the Griffins might be thefavorite in Class B South, althoughdefending division champion PointBoro – which was not at theweekend tournament – will have alot to say about that. The Griffinsare a junior-heavy team, whilesenior Alec Mapoy impressedOliver on Saturday againstMatawan and Northern ValleyDemerest.

Like Brick Memorial, Centrallost a slew of scoring with thegraduation of its top two scorers –Blake Czajkowski (25 goals) andDoug Jensen (19 goals) – but has a quality group ofjuniors and a solid senior leader in Shane Cranstoun to

help ease the transition.Youssef Abdelaziz andNate Wiley both look likecapable scorers and coachRob Bechtloff has beenimpressed with junior CoryCasten in the early going aswell. Central also addsManchester transfer andsenior midfielder JakeDufner to the fold.

REPPING ANORTHClass A North’s only

representative over theweekend was Middletown

North, which is in the process of replacing sevenstarters while also bringing back a handful of impactplayers. Junior Ryan Harmon enjoyed a breakout yearas a sophomore and Scott Wiegel is back in goal afteran early-season injury ended a promising year. CoachFred Napoli also said he will have sophomore LiamMcGregor will play this season after electing to playAcademy soccer last year.

DEFENDING STATECHAMPS LOADED UP FORTITLE DEFENSE

Shore Regional is comingoff a state sectionalchampionship and could endup being the best teamamong the Shore Conferencefield in Toms River. TheBlue Devils return most oftheir scoring from a seasonago and although they didnot have a complete teamover the weekend (39-goalscorer J.T. Kessler wasplaying sweeper in the finalgame of the weekend), mostof the reviews from otherShore Conference coacheswere predictably positive.

It was a close game until the fifth inningwhen Jackson starting pitcher Sean

Slusak came off the mound as he had reachedthe 85-pitch maximum. Red Land then scoredeight runs on two, two-run doubles, a two-runhome run and some fielder’s choices. Jacksoncould not come back from such a barrage. The loss was Jackson’s second to Red Land in theMid-Atlantic Regional Tournament who came backstrong on Saturday to shut out Maryland 10-0 and meetRed Land in hopes of continuing onto Williamsport andthe Little League World Series.Jackson Little League President Allen A. Goldbergpraised the team for representing the league, townshipand state with “a dignity and class well beyond theiryears.” In an email, Goldberg singled out managerEvan Glaser and his coaching staff for giving their timeto the team “without question or reward” and Glaser forputting the team ahead of his family.Glaser, meanwhile, said it was “emotional” for histeam after their loss but reminded them that in makingthe mid-Atlantic by winning the state title they didsomething no other Jackson Little League team “and noone can take that away from you.”The team, which returned home immediately after thegame, will get together for a party before school starts.

It was 17 summers ago thata Toms River East

American Little League team ledby then 12-year old Todd Frazierwon the Little League WorldSeries. It was the highlight of an amazingfive-year run that saw manager MikeGaynor take three All-Star teams fromthe Toms River East Little League allthe way to Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

What often helped them was the toughcompetition they received right in theirown backyard during the District 18Tournament which began in late Juneamong the 12 little leagues in OceanCounty.Frazier, of course, is now a star withthe Cincinnati Reds and much haschanged since he was freckle-facedpre-teen but one constant has been theincredible success Ocean County teamshave had when it comes to Little

The shoulder is a highly mobile joint and thereforevery susceptible to injury. There are many ways that

the shoulder can be injured during the fall athleticseason: repetitive arm motions as in an overhead

volleyball serve, falling on an outstretched armas in a soccer game or dislocations that are

commonly associated with the externallyrotated position of a football offensivelineman.

Fortunately, performing proper warm-upactivities, strength training andimplementing proper technique candecrease an athlete’s potential for injury.Strength training utilizing free weights,thera-bands or even your own bodyweight can increase the stability in andaround the shoulder joint. Warm-up

exercises should be performed after the athlete breaks asweat and can include such things as pendulum swings, arm circles and cross-body stretches. Optimally, eachstretch should be held for 30 seconds or more.If you do experience a shoulder injury, an athlete

should seek the opinion of a specialty trainedorthopaedic surgeon, as a quick diagnosis andtreatment plan often leads to a quicker recovery andreturn to sport.
