SLPID Commissioner Al McCauley submitted photos of the recent chestnut pull on the lake. The top picture is his grand-daughter Vianna and her friend Kala. The bottom picture is of our lake stewards, Nate Piche and Megan Johnson.

It’s been awhile since we’ve seen one of these! “Took a sunset boat ride and saw a car driving in the water. The man in the back was hanging onto his life jacket and I would, too!” (Virginia Clark) The Amphicar was built from 1961-1968 and have a 43 hp 4 cylinder motor that drives the rear wheels and the twin propel-lers. The front wheels become the rudders in the water. Be-cause of the rear wheel drive, getting the Amphicar back out of the water after driving it in can be a challenge if there is a steep angle on the boat launch ramp. The Amphicar sold for approxi-mately $35,000.

SARATOGA LAKE PROTECTION & IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT

Dear Saratoga Lake Owner, Several weeks ago the Saratoga Lake Protection & Im-provement District (SLPID) asked the voters of the Lake District to consider approving a building at $450,000, which would be used to store our harvesters, vehicles and other equipment. The building would be a simple steel shell, 70' by 100', with no heat or water and would offer a place out of the cold wind for our crew to provide servic-ing. It would also add life to our equipment by protecting them from the winter snow and ice. Considering the fact that a harvester today can cost over $225,000, a longer service life could amount to significant saving over time. This past winter we thought our harvester was vandalized. A storage building should eliminate vandalism. We have come to an agreement with the Town of Sarato-ga for a 50 year lease at no cost to us. This will eliminate the need to purchase land, which would have cost over $100,000. We would reduce construction costs by using an existing concrete foundation from a highway garage building, which was demolished. We had completed our design phase with an architect, and received bids from $411,000 to over $600,000. We chose to ask other builders to design another building of 65' by 95'. We have now received new bids where the building will not cost more than $265,000. That is the amount we are asking you to approve. We have set aside monies over a period of years, so that there will be NO increase in your taxes or NO bonding required for this project. A public hearing will be held on Thurs., Sept. 11 at 7 PM, at the Malta Town Hall on Route 9, followed by a voting to approve the building. We are asking that YOU come to this meeting to express your opinion and cast your vote. We welcome all questions about this project. The SLPID Commissioners thank you. Ed Dweck [email protected] 584-5448 You recently received notice of this vote via the mail. In it was a ballot. If you cannot make the meeting on September 11, please do send in your ballot. It is im-portant that as many residents as possible have a voice and your vote counts.

The Real Estate Market Housing starts sore in July! By Andrew Khoui That’s the title of the August 20, 2014 Rismedia’s week-ly Emailer. Rismedia is purported to be the Leader in Real Estate Information. The article goes on to say... (MCT) “New Home Construction surged to an eight month high in July, providing a lift to the broader economy. Housing starts jumped (nationally) 15.7 percent from June to a seasonably adjusted annual rate of 1,093,000, the Commerce Dept said Tuesday. Economists had ex-pected a rate of 965,000 according to FactSet.” The re-port also revised June’s rate of housing starts upward to 945,000 from 893,000. “This was a solid report “IHS Global Insight econo-mists Patrick Newport and Stephanie Karol wrote in an analysis. “Builders’ optimism is picking up.” The optimism, if it continues, could have a sus-tained, broad effect on the economy, including compa-nies that specialize in home improvement and construc-tion materials. Home Depot, for instance, said Tuesday, its profit in the fiscal second quarter, which ended Aug 3rd, jumped 14 percent to $2.05 billion, or $1.52 a share, from $1.8 billion or $1.24 a year earlier. The company, based in Atlanta, also raised its profit outlook for the year. Home Depot’s stock was trading up 5.8 percent Monday morn-ing to $88.47. The monthly Commerce Dept. report showed new home construction climbed in all regions except the Midwest, where starts fell 24.8 percent. Building per-mits, a gauge of future construction, rose 8.1 percent nationally in July. Credit Suisse economist, Dana Saporta, said the lat-est housing starts report should lessen concerns raised last week, by Fed Vice Chairman Stanley Fischer, that the housing market had become a major impediment to a more robust economic recovery. “Looking forward a case could be made for contin-ued improvement in the housing sector” Saporta said. And there have been signs that the national housing market is strengthening, after starting to cool last sum-mer amid higher prices and mortgage rates. Sales of previously owned homes have been on the rise, and a gauge of home-builder confidence, is at a sev-en-month high, a trade group reported Monday. News from Saratoga Tackle The Change of Seasons There is just something about September that spells changes. The leaves on the trees turning colors, apple crops ripening, kids getting ready for school, a bite to the air (although this August we've had plenty already), the start of hunting season and last months of fishing before hard water. Just as we get excited when summer comes there are plenty of reasons to get excited for fall. If you haven't tak-en the time to fish during September and October you are missing a great opportunity. All of the fish species become very active preparing for the colder months to come. This is a great time to try walleye fishing if you haven't had suc-cess during the difficult summer months. Pike will also be very aggressive. Spinnerbaits and crank baits become the "go to" lures. Bass are an open sea-son. All the plastics you enjoy in the summer continue to produce but now almost anything goes. Like pike try spin-nerbaits, crank baits, but also try jigs and all topwater baits. Everything seems to be on the move so don't get discouraged if the spot you're working is slow. Move, even just a few feet, and you will probably discover the fishing improves. If you are planning to hunt make sure you have checked over all your equipment before going out. Prac-tice shooting your gun or bow. Don't wait until you are out in the woods to find out there is a problem. Make sure you have prepared for the weather too. Light layers in the early fall will assure you are prepared for the entire day out. There is nothing worse than becoming uncomforta-ble and calling it a day before you are ready. Get out and enjoy the season! (submitted by Tim and Rose Blodgett)

Report from Paul Smith’s College

via SLPID Commissioner Al McCauley

Our stewards and a high school volunteer dragged the lake for spiny water fleas and this is the report from Paul Smith’s:

Al McCauley

“I am happy to inform you that we found no spiny wa-ter flea in the 3 sample jars sent up to the AWI from Sara-toga Lake. Let me confirm the sample date: was it August 4 in the afternoon?

This isn’t saying that SWF is NOT in Saratoga Lake, but that the samples you took on that day did not contain any of the organism. We should do this test each year.”
