How do you sum up a year in just a few sentences? I would describe 2017 as a “year of promise.” It was a year we promised to develop new, innovative person-centered services and programs. We also promised to increase visibility, accountability, and transparency. We are happy to report that we kept our promise to you.

First, we looked inward to better understand where we are and where we wanted to be in this changing economic landscape. Then, we looked outward by visiting 7 other disabilities organizations in the Chicagoland area. We are forever grateful to the leaders of those organizations for openly sharing their insights, experiences, and successes. And also for bravely sharing their failures and lessons learned.

INNOVATION

We added two new person-centered programs:

True North seeks to maximize participation for adults with intellectual and other developmental disabilities in integrated community life, through vocational exploration and employment path services.

Life in Motion – Your Choice Program for adults with more severe and profound disabilities to have increased opportunity to engage in our community, as well as, job shadow, volunteer, and make choices as to how they spend their day.

We have also added more innovative housing options for individuals with disabilities who want to live in their own home and receive the appropriate support to provide the highest level of independence and autonomy.

PERFORMANCE

Every year, human service organizations are evaluated closely to determine the organization’s competence and commitment to excellence. Thanks to the tireless work of our dedicated staff, many of whom have over 20 years of service with Shore, we achieved the following:

• A score of 94% by the Bureau of Accreditation, Licensing and Certification by the Department of Human Services for our Day Program and CILA residential programs.

• Shore Homes West was 100% in compliance with the Illinois Department of Public Health.

• Platinum Level approval rating from GuideStar, a charity review organization for transparency and effectiveness.

This year, our Annual Report Theme is “The Heart of Shore” and understanding what that is and what it says about us.

The “Heart of Shore” is in our staff, our board of directors, donors, communities served, suppliers, volunteers, and friends. But most of all, “The Heart of Shore” is in the individuals that we serve.

Thank you for all that you do.

Yours in great admiration, love and appreciation,

India Alexis Ehioba, MNA, CFRE Chief Executive Officer

Have you ever wondered how the items you buy get packaged? At the Joseph Koenig, Sr. Training Center, which provides vocational training to over 160 individuals, packaging and fulfillment are only two of over 20 services we provide to the community. The center contracts with area businesses to provide paid employment opportunities for participants like Emily. She has been working at the Koenig Center for nearly five years, and, when asked what she likes about Shore, Emily stated, “It’s fun, and I like to come here to work.”

According to LaToya Morgan, Program Manager, Emily enjoys her tasks and independently checks her finished products to make sure they meet quality standards. She is very friendly and helpful to staff and her peers. Emily’s job is especially important to program partners Topco Associates, LLC., a privately held company that provides innovative business solutions for its food industry members and customers. In fact, over six months Emily and her peers completed the re-packaging of 194,226 school supplies, getting them ready in time for the start of the new school year. This was a huge endeavor, and Emily was happy to know that so many children would be prepared for school because of her hard work. Emily loves cooking and preparing meals with her family, downloading music, and working on her computer.

Patrick, a client at the Koenig Center, recently had an experience he will never forget. He was able to job shadow a “Mentor” at Curt’s Café on Central Street in Evanston. For three weeks Patrick observed and learned what is involved in working in a restaurant. This was very special because Patrick’s dream job is to work in a restaurant. His job at home is to set the table and clear dishes, so seeing these tasks done in a real café was thrilling for him. The highlight for Patrick was helping to make a smoothie.

Anni Braverman, Rehabilitation Coordinator, stated that the owner of Curt’s Café, Susan Trieschmann, wanted to start a “Give Back Initiative” and felt that working with Shore would be a perfect way for her clients to help others in the community. In June 2017, a partnership started that provides opportunities for job exploration within the café setting. During the three-week sessions, clients bring questions and conduct an informational interview with their Mentor about their job the first week, shadow to see how duties are performed the second week, and the last week the Mentor conducts a mock interview to give the client interview experience.

The mission of Curt’s Café is to improve outcomes for young adults living in at-risk situations through work and life skills training. This partnership provides real job exposure for our clients and has been a win/win experience for Patrick, the three other clients who have had the opportunity, and for the Mentors.

Thank you! Curt’s Café for being a leader in providing job opportunities for individuals with and without developmental disabilities.

At Shore, we are always keeping the ever-changing needs of our clients as the focus of our care. And we want to provide them with encouragement and support to achieve a higher quality of life, engage in the community, develop more independence, and empower them to make decisions about how they spend their day. This is why the Life In Motion — Your Choice Program was developed.

Janakan was one of the first individuals to participate in the launch of this new program. One activity he thoroughly enjoys is attending the Next Chapter Book Club offered by the Skokie Public Library. The book club gives individuals the opportunity to read various books, discuss different topics, and meet new peers. In the beginning Janakan was a little shy, didn’t talk, and on numerous occasions refused to read. However, after completing the nine-week session, Janakan was more willing to discuss different topics, asked more questions, and his interactions among his peers improved. Janakan loves to read and even volunteered at the library years ago, and now he can share that love of reading with more people.

“By being able to plan

the activities he wants

to participate in, Janakan

has improved his work

habits when he attends

the Koenig Center.”

The next time you go shopping at Shore’s resale shop - Second Time Around Thrift & Gift Shop at 4123 Oakton St. in Skokie - you will discover a true treasure in their employee Cynthia a.k.a. Cindy. Cindy has worked at the shop for over four years and has made tremendous progress acquiring new job skills like ringing up sales and learning how to use the internet. Her friendly demeanor has made her a favorite amongst the shop volunteers, and the loyal customers love interacting with her. Cindy likes making the customers happy, decorating the shop around all the holidays, and helping to train new volunteers how to run the shop. She said, “I like to be challenged.”

For over 25 years, Shore has assisted Cindy in her vocational pursuits and her efforts to develop the skills needed to live independently. She attends the Joseph Koenig, Sr. Training Center once a week and receives intermit support from our Supported Living Arrangement Program. Cindy lives in her own condo, drives, and is an avid bowler who competes in the Special Olympics. She also enjoys spending time with her boyfriend Jay, seeing movies, going out to eat, working on her own computer, and listening to music.

Gwen Kessler, COMMUNITY RELATIONS MANAGER

“Cindy is very friendly and hard working. I enjoy working with her because of her positive attitude, willingness to learn new skills, and how she helps in any way she can. Cindy brings smiles to all of those around her and is a very special person.”

How can you help your community? If you ask Jerrold, or “Jerry” as he’s known, he’ll tell you that volunteering is the answer. He has been helping his community for over 20 years. From being a Marshall at the Evanston and Skokie 4th of July Parades to assisting at Chicago’s Thanksgiving Parade and participating in the Avon Breast Cancer Walk, Jerry really knows how to have fun volunteering. Why does he do it? “I like to,” Jerry answered.

Jerry has been a part of the Shore family for over 30 years and is a resident at the Patricia Lloyd Townhomes. He receives vocational training at the Koenig Center’s Supported Employment Program. After 20 years of employment at a home improvement store, Jerry now works at the Goodwill Store in Evanston where he is a maintenance worker. Every Wednesday Jerry cleans Shore’s Administration Center and is always willing to take on extra tasks.

Jerry likes attending sporting events like Northwestern and Cubs games and spending time with his Best Buddy. He has forged a close friendship with his new roommate Phillip, and they enjoy watching sports games together.

“Jerry has shown a great

investment in the community

by supporting Breast Cancer

Awareness and other causes

annually. He looks forward to

volunteering and socializing

with the other volunteers he

has come to know well over

the years.”

“As a parent of a Shore client, I am deeply grateful for the care and support my son is receiving. The staff, at all levels, is deeply concerened with the well being of the clients. My husband and I really like the direction Shore is taking with more individualized programming and more community outings.”
