The Crucible: HONORS written final NAME: DIRECTIONS: We’ve looked at a number of different aspects during the play: characterization, genre conventions, mood, conflict, symbol, theme, etc. Type your answers directly into this document to demonstrate your ability to analyze the play according to the elements on which we focused. 1. CHARACTERIZATION/SYMBOL/PROP We’ve talked about a number of genre conventions, like stage directions, dialogue, sounds, props. Choose one of the following characters, and think about a trinket/accessory to accompany that character in a revived staging of the play to in some way reflect something about him/her. EXAMPLE : The Pirates of the Caribbean movies: Captain Jack Sparrow has a chicken foot hanging off his vest. One might think that he acquired it on his Caribbean travels (like a voodoo item) and thus it represents his adventurous spirit and willingness to embrace danger. EXAMPLE : Annie: the orphaned child wears a locket around her neck. Half of the heart-shaped metal is missing and so serves as a reminder of the parents who left her, offering Annie hope that they will one day return for her. The locket also reveals Annie’s positivity about finding satisfaction in life (“The sun’ll come out, tomorrow…”) as well as her longing to be loved. So, in a few sentences, identify the character you have selected, the item you’ve thought of, and a piece of direct textual evidence (cited!) to link the item to the character (and what the item reveals about him/her). Be original! (Don’t use an object already noted in the play, like Abby clutching a needle jabbed into her stomach. Also, avoid something like Hale carrying a cross b/c he is a minister; that isn’t honors-level insight.) John Elizabeth Abby Mary Hale Rebecca Ann Putnam CHARACTE R OBJECT TEXTUAL EVIDENCE (cited) EXPLANATION 2. MOOD Examine the pages below from Act III when Mary begins to crumble under peer pressure and John calls Abby a whore. As you identify mood, focus on John’s actions/thoughts/feelings. Then, complete the prompts.
