Free Literacy Pathways course at McFaddens CentreHagley Adult Literacy Centre’s Literacy Pathway course at McFaddens Centre focuses on making learning an enjoyable and relaxed experience. The Centre promotes lifelong learning and helps improve literacy skills. Literacy is often thought to be just about reading and writing. While these skills are important, literacy also includes speaking, listening, problem solving, maths and computer skills. Building literacy is worthwhile at any age and for any number of purposes. Literacy is a major part of being actively involved in the community, increasing your options for employment and formal education, and for accessing community services.

The Literacy Pathways course at McFaddens Centre offers the opportunity to take charge of your own learning, set your own goals and work at your own pace in a supportive environment. There is a course currently running at the St Albans Baptist Church, 64 McFaddens Road, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9am to 1pm during school term times. You can join at any time of the year. The course is free to attend, for eligible learners, as it is funded by the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC).

The learning is in small groups with one-on-one help as you need it. The tutor creates a personal programme for each learner based on their own goals and plans. As well as working on literacy skills the tutor can assist in career planning, CV writing and searching for jobs. Learners can build their literacy skills to increase their employment options or to return to mainstream education prior to seeking employment.

Learners on the Literacy Pathways course find that the course helps their confidence. Plus, it provides the opportunity to work towards NZQA unit standards including NCEA level 1. Hagley Adult Literacy Centre also runs Literacy Pathways courses in other areas: Aranui, Hoon Hay and Upper Riccarton.

For further information about the course at McFaddens Centre, or any of our Literacy Pathways courses please contact Hagley Adult Literacy Centre Ph: (03) 379 1916 or 027 899 5220. Or drop in at McFaddens Centre on the days the course is running. The tutor will be happy to discuss the programme with you.

Winter isn’t quite over, and it’s been a bad one for colds and influenza, but we’ve had a lot of very nice days (thank goodness!), which means the plants think it’s time to get their flowers into gear. For a lot of people this means the start of a long season of hay fever. While a lot of us probably have a good idea of what works for them, here is a quick run through of all the options, as far as treating hay fever with medicine goes:

Tablets - these are the mainstay of treating hay fever. I generally refer to these as a jack of all trades, master of none. For some these do the trick, but for others they help but don’t really hit all the symptoms on the head. There are a handful of new ones on the market these days, and if you’re finding your tablets aren’t quite doing the job, come see us about this, the new ones can work very well.

Nasal sprays - There are a couple of different kinds of sprays, and if sneezing and itchy noses are big symptoms for you, regular preventative nasal sprays are the way to go. There are more kinds than most people realise.

Eye drops – These are the least common kind of hay fever treatment, but if watery and itchy eyes are what you suffer from the most, it’s quite possible that eye drops are the way to go for you.

People probably suffer more than they need to with hay fever. Please pop down to the Mairehau Community Pharmacy, and get your hayfever under control before it gets bad.

Aging, poorly insulated and poorly heated homes is one of the long term problems that we have been tackling. Since the Warmer Kiwi Homes subsidy for heat pumps kicked in on 1 July enquiries have been pouring in. Warmer Kiwi Homes covers 67 per cent of the cost of ceiling and under floor insulation. Dr Duncan Webb

Keeping Kiwis warmer

Once your home is adequately insulated you may also qualify for a new heat pump subsidy. The programme will subsidise 67 per cent of a new heat pump from an approved provider up to a $2500 total cost for qualifying homeowners. To qualify you need a Community Services Card, or live in an area identified as lower income and in a home built before 2008.If you would like more information call 0800 358 676 / 0800 GET WARM. As this edition went to print an elderly constituent in my electorate was enjoying the warmth from a brand new heat pump after my office helped her navigate the process. Another option to investigate is ECan’s Healthier Homes Canterbury – where homeowners may be able to access a loan for heating and insulation that is paid back via rates. It’s also very pleasing to see Pharmac announce funding for new cancer drugs as a result of the $10 million extra we put into it in the Wellbeing Budget. More people accessing more lifesaving drugs was exactly our goal. This follows closely the announcement by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern that ageing, past their use-by date radiation machines for cancer treatment will be replaced. Some regions will also get machines where previously they have not had access to them, meaning those patients won’t have to travel for lifesaving treatment. We’re making good progress on the years of neglect that left our health system so underfunded and our hospitals falling apart. We can’t fix everything at once, but we are taking a balanced approach and making good progress on meeting a wide range of needs. If you’d like to have a chat with my office, you can contact us on 3665519 or email us on [email protected]â mihi, Dr Duncan Webb, MP for Christchurch Central

Owning a good quality, well maintained bike can transform your life.Cycling is great for physical health and fitness, contributes to mental wellbeing, enables access to recreational places difficult to get to on foot or bus, offers a fast and efficient transport option and generates a sense of freedom and independence. However for many people on low incomes, buying a bike can be fraught with difficulties because cheap bikes can be prone to malfunctioning, says Health Promoter at Community and Public Health, Meg Christie.“To help address this issue Community and Public Health initiated a pilot project whereby people who access Specialist Mental Health Services or Corrections are supported to buy good quality, second-hand bikes.”The ‘BuyCycles’ project which is a collaboration between Community & Public Health and Community Focus Trust, provides the initial finance to buy a bike which suits the client’s choice, physical needs and price range. The client then pays off their debt, interest-free, at a rate that does not cause financial hardship.“This supported purchase model is a novel approach towards alleviating a health disadvantage, in this case a transport disadvantage,” she says.Feedback from customers and case managers in the first seven months has been extremely positive.“They say the bike has also provided them with an enjoyable method to increase their physical activity which has a positive spin-off for their overall health.” Over two-thirds say they use their bike every day, are saving money on other types of transport and their mental wellbeing has improved.“One customer said riding in Bottle Lake Forest or up the Rapaki track helps his mood.”Another does a paper run and appreciates his sturdy Marin bike with a rack to carry several kilos of advertising material. He had previously been experiencing back pain from hauling the load. His partner also bought a bike through the scheme and anticipates using it when she gets a job. In the meantime the couple can access more places, further afield, more cheaply and get exercise together while they are at it,Meg says. Most clients have said it is easy to budget $5 per week and already 13 have completely paid their debt. With a sharp lookout for quality bargains and the small team of volunteer mechanics fine-tuning the purchases for free, the average cost of a bike, helmet and lock has been just over $100.A few bikes have been donated and these have been restored and on-sold for a fair price which has helped offset the unforeseen expense, for example, when two clients had their BuyCycles bikes stolen the project was able to replace them with no extra debt accrued, she says.

A novel approach toalleviating disadvantage

Harley & Caroline on theirway to do some shopping

The project is seeking referrals from organisations working with clients who have accessed Specialist Mental Health Services and/or Corrections who would benefit from owning a good bike.

“We have a range of membership options for juniors and seniors and the open days are a great way for people to ask any questions about these,” explains Club President Jamie Poole. “We hope to attract a vibrant membership each season so we can continue to provide members with free court access, coaching, tournaments and maintain our affiliation with Canterbury Tennis.”

The club’s affiliation provides Edgeware members with the opportunity to compete against other clubs at Interclub level – and with proven success. Last season saw Edgeware take out the Men’s Division 1 grade for the second time in three years. The team met Te-Kura/Hagley Park in the final. Halfway through the singles, Edgeware had cemented an unassailable 3-1 lead and the tie was abandoned.

“After a long 6 months of playing some of the best teams in Christchurch, it was satisfying for the team to come away with the win.

Hopefully we can continue the run of form into the upcoming season,” says Jamie.

“The club is looking forward to enjoying another great year of tennis.”

Take a look at edgewaretennis.co.nz our Facebook page or attend the open day to learn more.
