Kojonup Historical Society Congratulations are extended to Arnold Bilney on being recognised as a ‘Patron of the Society’ who now joins Merle Bignall. Thank you both for your continued commitment to preserve and promote the history of Kojonup. Commemoration Way Plaque The service and sacrifice of WA's Victoria Cross (VC) and George Cross recipients will be remembered with each recipient being commemorated at rest stops along the Albany and South Western highways. Extract from Hon Terry Waldron MLA Member for Wagin press release: "The series of plaques will be called Commemoration Way and will be rolled out between ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day, this year," Mr Waldron said. “I often drive along the Albany Highway, which runs through the Wagin electorate, and not only will these plaques provide a lift to the rest stops but they will also provide a history lesson to locals and tourists to this part of the State.”

While the Victoria Cross is awarded for extreme gallantry in the face of the enemy, the George Cross - open to service personnel and civilians – was in recognition of extreme bravery that did not involve contact with the enemy. Further, in 1975 the George Cross was replaced by the Cross of Valour and to date, no WA servicemen or servicewomen have been awarded it. The Department of Corrective Services will provide a work party of minimum security (Section 95) prisoners to install the plaques.” One of the plaques has been temporarily placed near the Potts walk bridge until Master Planning for the area has been completed. Community members are reminded that the Shire President is available for appointments Wednesday morning from 10:00am until noon. Please contact the Shire Office on (08) 9831 2400. SPRINGHAVEN NEWS

Spring has sprung here at Springhaven – finally! The birds are out singing and foraging for food which the residents love because they can sit and watch them. The flowers are blooming and the residents go out daily to pick flowers for the tables in the Recreation Room. We have made the most of the sun (when it decides to come out) by going out to sit and reminisce about life. The residents have been busy decorating tiles this month. Once they are completed Stacy, our OTA, will get a frame made up and the tiles will be on display at Springhaven for everyone to enjoy. The tiles are looking fantastic and the array of colours used is delightful to look at.

Every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday the residents have the pleasure of Helen Bignell, our physiotherapist, visiting to facilitate exercise classes to improve their mobility and balance. The classes consist of Tai Chi, relaxation and breathing techniques. They also use a parachute as part of the exercise program. The residents enjoy sitting down and making the ball move on top of the parachute. The laughter had by all is wonderful. If you have any special talents that you would like to share with our residents please let us know by giving us a call on 98312800. Morning tea is from 9:45am and afternoon tea is at 3:00pm daily. Come along and join us!

LIBRARY NEWS I hope you’re all enjoying the beautiful spring weather, our gorgeous parks, bush reserves historical venues and our town in general. It’s been a little bit few and far between this year but it’s gradually warming up! New Reads

The Davis Sisters – Rachael Johns. Selah Davis loves her life as a journalist in Seattle (or so she says) but on a rare trip home to Marietta to cover the Copper Mountain Rodeo, she confesses to her best friends over drinks that her one regret in life is not sleeping with her high school

boyfriend, Levi Monroe. Into the bar walks Levi, also home for the rodeo. When her friends dare her to proposition him for a one night stand, she’s at first appalled… but the more she thinks about remedying her one regret, the less she can get him and their electric chemistry out of her head.

Kiss the Bride – Rachael Johns. It seems that wedding fever has hit the little town of Marietta and that suits single mom, Magdalena Davis, just fine. It means the local gossips will stop hounding her about returning to town and the secret she’s kept for fifteen years. Home

to make peace with her sick mother, the last thing Mags wants is to get involved in Marietta’s big celebrity wedding. But when her teenage daughter cajoles her into auditioning to sing with a local heartthrob, all her plans for flying under the radar zoom out of the window

Why Can't They Get Along? – Dan Cohn-Sherbok, Dawoud El-Alami & George Chryssides. Three men of faith – one Jew, one Muslim and one Christian – debate the differences between them. The result is a compelling discussion: What do their faiths teach on the big issues of life?

What can be done to make for better relationships in the future? What can be done on the big global areas of conflict and tension? How can they get along?

Change Your Brain, Change Your Life – Dr. Daniel G. Amen. In this breakthrough bestseller, you'll see scientific evidence that your anxiety, depression, anger, obsessiveness or impulsiveness could be related to how specific structures in your brain work. You're not stuck with the brain

you're born with.

The Problem with Forever – Jennifer L. Armentrout. When Mallory was a kid, she was bounced from one horrible foster home to another. At thirteen, a terrible accident got her removed from the group home where she was living to a hospital where she met the parents who would adopt her.

KIDSAFE WA

Kidsafe WA has recently launched a ‘Do Not Leave Children in Cars’ campaign. This campaign aims to raise community awareness and reduce the number of children left unattended in parked cars in Western Australia. Every year approximately 5,000 Australian children are rescued from parked cars, with three-quarters of these children aged between zero and four years. Even on a cool day the temperature in a parked car can be over 30 degrees hotter than outside. In fact, 75% of the total temperature rise can occur within the first five minutes of parking a car. As part of this campaign, Kidsafe WA has designed car park signs. These signs can be purchased by organisations such as local governments, shopping complexes, entertainment venues and schools. The signs can be installed in carparks to remind community members to take their children with them.

Kidsafe WA is asking for your help to raise awareness by displaying these signs in car parks in your local community. If you are interested in purchasing 'Do Not Leave Children in Cars' signs or would like more information please call Kidsafe WA on 9340 8509 or email [email protected]. Thank you in advance for your support.
